Secrets and Lies by Dale F. Eickelman,Allison Lee Schumitsch Pdf

Secrecy, deception, and lying are as basic to social life as sharing, trust, and community. Yet most moral and ethical codes treat secrecy and lying as dangerous and wrong, or at best as necessary evils appropriate to unusual or extreme situations. As part of the “social imaginary” of any society—accepted and shared background understandings concerning how families, communities, organizations, and institutions operate—learning to keep secrets, deceive, lie, and deny are part of the moral rules-in-use is an integral part of becoming a full and trusted person. In recent years, secrecy and lying have become increasingly recognized in the social imaginary of most societies, but there remains a strong tendency to deflect attention from recognizing the pervasiveness importance of secrecy and lying. Tales of government deception, corporate fraud, and the sexual improprieties of heads of state and royalty enter into public discussion throughout the world. Spy novels in American and European societies make secrecy and deception an adventure, yet deflect attention from the extent to which secrecy and lying are so much apart of the ordinary fabric of society that calling attention to their pervasiveness is dismissed as cynicism or hypocrisy. Police training manuals inculcate techniques of deception and deceit, and the defenders of such techniques consider them appropriate provided that interrogators use them to ascertain the “truth” and stay within bounds accepted by courts, lawyers, and formal review boards—or at least do not come to their formal attention. Whether practices of lying or deception are given the softer label of “deniability” in politics or no label at all, as in corporate deception or advertising, family life, secrecy and lying are pervasive values that help define the boundaries of person, community, and belonging. This book suggests how secrecy and lying can be made a more explicit element of the anthropology of knowledge. As an alternative to a moralizing approach to the subject, it shows how secrecy and lying work in practice—and why they are tolerated and even admired—in different cultural and social contexts. The book, an estimated 200 pages manuscript, is intended to provoke new thinking on the subject and awareness of the role of secrecy and lying in society.

Telling Lies: Clues to Deceit in the Marketplace, Politics, and Marriage (Revised Edition) by Paul Ekman Pdf

From breaking the law to breaking a promise, how do people lie and how can they be caught? In this revised edition, Paul Ekman, a renowned expert in emotions research and nonverbal communication, adds a new chapter to present his latest research on his groundbreaking inquiry into lying and the methods for uncovering lies. Ekman has figured out the most important behavioral clues to deceit; he has developed a one-hour self-instructional program that trains people to observe and understand "micro expressions"; and he has done research that identifies the facial expressions that show whether someone is likely to become violent—a self-instructional program to train recognition of these dangerous signals has also been developed. Telling Lies describes how lies vary in form and how they can differ from other types of misinformation that can reveal untruths. It discusses how a person’s body language, voice, and facial expressions can give away a lie but still fool professional lie hunters?even judges, police officers, drug enforcement agents, and Secret Service agents.

War and Morality by Michael Cavanagh Pdf

In democratic societies, it is said that wars and military interventions are fought in the name of the citizens of the nation engaged in the conflict. Yet, ordinary citizens, the major stakeholders in war, are seldom provided with as much information for making and acting on their moral decisions about war as they are about many other national issues that affect them. To fill the void, this volume addresses the nature of conscience, various moral norms, a moral decision-making process, and the theoretical and practical issues involved in attempting to avoid war or at least to make it as moral as possible, considering its nature. By discussing how the morality of war differs from its political, military, economic and legal dimensions, this unique work attempts to enable citizens to make informed decisions about declaring, waging and ending war, and to act on those decisions. Bloody Revenge by Thomas J. Scheff Pdf

As violence erupts in endless cycles and old grievances reemerge throughout the world, we are challenged to examine the underpinnings of protracted conflict. In this bold new work, Thomas Scheff argues that the roots of protracted conflict lie in unacknowledged feelings of shame and rage. Scheff builds from the assumption that the social bond is a real and palpable phenomena and that in every type of human contact the bond is either built, maintained, repaired, or damaged. He then demonstrates how damaged bonds are the basic cause of conflict. When one side or the other in a dispute is humiliated or threatened in such a way as to disturb fundamental bonds, the feelings that follow are often not acknowledged. Threats to the social bond give rise to violent emotions, shame, and rage. Unless these feelings are resolved, the stage is then set for cycles of insult, humiliation, and bloody revenge. According to Scheff, it is by recognizing the emotional source of conflict and repairing the broken social bond that both sides achieve cognitive and emotional understanding, allowing them to trust and cooperate, and perceive themselves as "all in the same boat." Thus, secure social bonds ensure clear boundaries–even during competition or conflict–that help keep wars limited and make disagreements productive.

Master of Deceit by Marc Aronson Pdf

A fascinating and timely biography of J. Edgar Hoover from a Sibert Medalist. "King, there is only one thing left for you to do. You know what it is. . . . You better take it before your filthy, abnormal, fraudulent self is bared to the nation.” Dr. Martin Luther King received this demand in an anonymous letter in 1964. He believed that the letter was telling him to commit suicide. Who wrote this anonymous letter? The FBI. And the man behind it all was J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI's first director. In this unsparing exploration of one of the most powerful Americans of the twentieth century, accomplished historian Marc Aronson unmasks the man behind the Bureau- his tangled family history and personal relationships; his own need for secrecy, deceit, and control; and the broad trends in American society that shaped his world. Hoover may have given America the security it wanted, but the secrets he knew gave him — and the Bureau — all the power he wanted. Using photographs, cartoons, movie posters, and FBI transcripts, Master of Deceit gives readers the necessary evidence to make their own conclusions. Here is a book about the twentieth century that blazes with questions and insights about our choices in the twenty-first. Back matter includes an epilogue, an author’s note, source notes, and a bibliography.
