Seeking Redemption by THADDEUS O. COOPER,KEVIN B. KREITMAN Pdf

Seeking Redemption - The Real Story of the Beautiful Game of Skee-Ball is the first and only book about the history of Skee-Ball, and the authoritative history of the game. Seeking Redemption tells a timeless story of a start-up, beginning with the unlikely inventor, Joseph Fourestier Simpson, and featuring all of the classic struggles and triumphs. It is also a story of how this beloved game of Skee-Ball survived two world wars, recessions and depressions, industry transformations, technology revolutions and legal wrangling to thrive for over 100 years. Skee-Ball morphed from its' origins as "A Man's Game" to becoming a fascinating game for everyone. It's continued to survive patent wars, clone competition, and the threats of bankruptcy and obscurity to emerge once again as a best selling iPhone app, and be resurrected for modern amusement venues by Bay Tek Games, Inc. redesign in 2016. This book is a treasure for history buffs as well. Meticulously researched from primary sources, lavishly illustrated with original photographs, letters, papers and documents, it allows the history to speak for itself in an engaging and readable way. Not just the story of the game, it is a unique view into the universal human struggles for redemption and recognition, and a salute to the eternal inventiveness of the human spirit.

Lifers by John Irwin Pdf

John Irwin writes about prisons from an unusual academic perspective. Before receiving a Ph.D. in sociology, he served five years in a California state penitentiary for armed robbery. This is his sixth book on imprisonment – an ethnography of prisoners who have served more than twenty years in a California correctional institution. The purpose of the book is to take issue with the conventional wisdom on homicide, society’s purposes of imprisonment, and offenders’ reformability. Through the lifers’ stories, he reveals what happens to prisoners serving very long sentences in correctional facilities and what this should tell us about effective sentencing policy.

The Redemption by Stephen T. Davis,Daniel Kendall SJ,Gerald O'Collins SJ Pdf

This interdisciplinary study follows an international and ecumenical meeting of twenty-one scholars held in New York at Easter 2003: the Redemption Summit. After an opening chapter, which explores seven central questions for writers on redemption, five chapters are dedicated to the scriptural roots of the doctrine. A section on the patristic and medieval periods then examines the interpretation of redemption through the centuries. The volume moves on to foundational and systematic issues: the problem of horrendous evil, karma and grace, and differing views on justification. Studies on the redemption in literature, art, music, and preaching form the final part. There is a fruitful dialogue between experts in a wide range of areas and the international reputation of the participants reflects and guarantees the high quality of this joint work. The result is a well researched, skilfully argued, and, at times, provocative volume on the central Christian belief: the redemption of human beings through Jesus Christ.

She has also been struggling with her alliance with Sybil and Mordok, who she knows are not to be trusted. Film and Redemption by David Rankin Pdf

This book explores the representation of the idea or theme of redemption in contemporary, popular film. The discussion focuses primarily on the work of three directors – Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese and Kore-eda Hirokazu – but also considers a few films from other directorial hands. David Rankin divides the notion of personal redemption into transactional and transformational aspects, differentiating between redemption, understood as that which is external to the person but impacting on their being and environment, and that which is internal to the person. Redemption is viewed broadly as a journey from brokenness to wholeness, from imprisonment to release, or from some form of slavery to freedom. Both secular and religious (especially Christian) understandings of the notion are discussed, and consideration is given to how the former might inform the latter.

On Redemption, the Value of Putting Bad Things to Good Use by Peyton Craig McElroy Pdf

This dissertation offers a theory of a solution to the problem of lost meaning in life due to regrettable, past events. Each of us wishes for a meaningful life, but each of us, too, is vulnerable to threats to the meaning in life. The dissertation argues that a phenomenon called redemption can restore lost meaningfulness, and increase the value of our lives, overall. The first step in the argument is to demonstrate the need for a new model of redemption. The next step is to argue that redemption is a matter of transforming the meaning of events in our lives from bad to good in a thick, eudaimonistic sense related to a person's well-being. Finally, I show that this transformation not only increases a person's well-being but, more importantly, changes the relationship a person has with his past; By satisfying conditions for meaningfulness—a special value a life can have, distinct from its moral goodness or happiness—redemption renders the past more meaningful that it would have otherwise been. Because of this, redemption can solve the problem articulated in the beginning of the dissertation—the problem of lost meaning in life due to bad, past events.

Redemption in the Majella Mountains by Ken Cancellara Pdf

Ken’s grandfather always inspired him, as a child, to respect and love the outdoors and to find in nature the introspection and refuge to allow every person to solve any of life’s vicissitudes. Recalling his grandfather’s philosophy, the author carries the reader through the mesmerizing beauty of the Majella mountains in the Abruzzi region of Central Italy. There Ken has the protagonist first find refuge, and ultimately, find redemption from the helter-skelter corporate life he left behind. These two existences, ambition and introspection, clash and confront each other so that the reader sees the unforgiving life of ambition lived by a grizzled corporate veteran pit itself against the newly-found introspective existence of a young man whose soul is forced to reawaken and leave behind the societal ladder to success in favor of the more simple, but much more satisfying, life of ethics and morality.

War and Redemption by Larry Dewey Pdf

Much has rightly been written about the physiological and psychological symptoms, known as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suffered by combat veterans, and their treatment. Much less has been written about the moral, spiritual and existential pain that soldiers experience as a consequence of carrying through the stated purpose of war for the common soldier - kill the enemy until the war is won. Based on his 20+ years' experience of treating combat veterans, Dr Larry Dewey explores the war trauma and life adaptation of combatants over two decades of intensive treatment. He addresses moral, spiritual and existential issues while also attending to the important physiological and psychological symptoms. Using case material, thoughts, experiences and, literally, the words of 65 veterans of various wars, he portrays in depth and with meaningful detail the process of successful treatment and the eventual positive adaptation for these veterans. The volume explores the deep pain and burden of killing and the role of propaganda and love in starting and maintaining war. Through the veterans' stories the author portrays the personal war of the ordinary combatant and the burden of guilt, grief and pain they often carry afterwards. The second part tackles the actual healing process, and part three explores the concepts of sin, confession, mercy, forgiveness, redemption and love, and how veterans have used them in aiding their own recovery from war's grief and moral pain. War and Redemption provides an invaluable tool in the understanding and treatment of PTSD for therapists, veterans and their families. It will also be a fascinating and valuable resource for all those interested in PTSD more generally.

The Fall Out of Redemption by Joseph Acquisto Pdf

Joseph Acquisto examines literary writers and critical theorists who employ theological frameworks, but who divorce that framework from questions of belief and thereby remove the doctrine of salvation from their considerations. Acquisto claims that Baudelaire inaugurates a new kind of amodern modernity by canceling the notion of salvation in his writing while also refusing to embrace any of its secular equivalents, such as historical progress or redemption through art. Through a series of “interhistorical” readings that put literary and critical writers from the last 150 years in dialogue, Acquisto shows how these authors struggle to articulate both the metaphysical and esthetic consequences of attempting to move beyond a logic of salvation. Putting these writers into dialogue with Baudelaire highlights the way both literary and critical approaches attempt to articulate a third option between theism and atheism that also steers clear of political utopianism and Nietzschean estheticism. In the concluding section, Acquisto expands metaphysical and esthetic concerns to account also for the ethics inherent in the refusal of the logic of salvation, an ethics which emerges from, rather than seeking to redeem or cancel, a certain kind of nihilism.

Beyond Redemption by Carole Emberton Pdf

In the months after the end of the Civil War, there was one word on everyone’s lips: redemption. From the fiery language of Radical Republicans calling for a reconstruction of the former Confederacy to the petitions of those individuals who had worked the land as slaves to the white supremacists who would bring an end to Reconstruction in the late 1870s, this crucial concept informed the ways in which many people—both black and white, northerner and southerner—imagined the transformation of the American South. Beyond Redemption explores how the violence of a protracted civil war shaped the meaning of freedom and citizenship in the new South. Here, Carole Emberton traces the competing meanings that redemption held for Americans as they tried to come to terms with the war and the changing social landscape. While some imagined redemption from the brutality of slavery and war, others—like the infamous Ku Klux Klan—sought political and racial redemption for their losses through violence. Beyond Redemption merges studies of race and American manhood with an analysis of post-Civil War American politics to offer unconventional and challenging insight into the violence of Reconstruction.
