African Cultural Knowledge by Michael C. Kirwen Pdf

"Based on field research data collected and analyzed over the past seventeen years, the Maryknoll Institute of African Studies has categorized cultural knowledge into fifteen themes and thirty-five domains. The themes are the major values, symbols and ideas that bring wholeness and coherence to a culture. The themes explain the nature of life, the nature of creation, the nature of evil, etc. Underneath and within these themes are thirty-five cultural domains, that is, specific activities, rituals, attitudes and happenings that make up the ordinary events in the lives of human beings, from birth to death and beyond ... The book is divided into fifteen chapters, one for each foundational theme"--Intro., p. [1].

African Pentecostalism, the Bible, and Cultural Resilience by Biri, Kudzai Pdf

"This volume, based on a PhD thesis submitted to the University of Zimbabwe, investigates the resilience of Shona religion and culture among ZAOGA Pentecostal Christians. Whereas the Pentecostal ideology suggests that 'old things' have passed away, it appears that 'old things' continue to have high significance for the 'new'. The book demonstrates how belief in avenging spirits, witches and witchcraft, value of words spoken prior to death, the role, status and significance of women, belief in unnatural events, liturgy and salvation have remained relevant to the lives of ZAOGA Shona converts. The patterns of continuity, discontinuity, extension, collaboration, contradiction, re-interpretation and rejection between Shona traditional religion and culture and ZAOGA are explored, challenging the framing of African Pentecostalism as a mere imitation and parroting of US theology. The conclusion is that while ZAOGA self-consciously presents itself as a sophisticated, trans-national and progressive Pentecostal movement, members continue to wrestle with Shona indigenous beliefs and practices. An African womanist framework is adapted to challenge ZAOGA to promote the well-being of women." --

Tradition, Culture & Underdevelopment of Africa by Udobata Onunwa Pdf

Africa, which used to host one of the Cradles of Ancient Civilizations of the world, has for long remained behind in areas of socio-economics and development. Her underdevelopment is a by-product of many factors. The author does not gloss over the exploitation and persistent destruction of the continent by Slave Trade, 'uncharitable' missionary enterprise and rivalry, colonisation and currently neo-colonialism. He goes further to project a controversial fundamental thesis that the tradition, culture and traditional religion of Africa contributed more than all other factors combined in keeping Africa behind in social development and progress. He is not afraid to suggest that Christianity which laid the foundation of the development of modern Western Europe, would do the same in Africa if allowed to determine African thought and action in areas of politics, law, justice, economics, commerce, marriage, government and administration. This will not imply throwing away some valuable aspects of the traditional religion and culture but rather enhancing them with valid aspects of Christian teaching and faith.Professor Onunwa is the author of many books including Studies in Igbo Traditional Religion and Culture (1990), African Spirituality (1992 - reprinted 2005), Glossary of African Traditions and Culture (1995), Confessing Christ in All Cultures (1998), Selected Themes in African Religion and Culture (2000), Studies in African Religion and Culture: A Critique of Methodologies (2004

African Spirituality by Udobata Onunwa Pdf

To penetrate the complex domain of African Spirituality is a task that demands personal contact with the living votaries of the traditional religion. It needs extra patience, commitment and an open mind to listen and understand the deep and immense spiritual powers that guide and direct African thought and action. The most important channel to use is to explore the African myths, which the Africans use enormously to express their philosophical, theological, cosmological and moral wisdom and values. Professor Onunwa has attempted to give a fresh insight into this complex domain of African studies. He has taught in universities and theological colleges in Nigeria, Tanzania, UK and India. Among his published works are Studies in Igbo Religion (1990), African Spirituality (1992 - Revised and Enlarged,2005), Selected Themes in African Religion and Culture (2000), Studies in African Religion and Culture: A Critique of Methodologies (2002 - reprinted 2004), Proclaiming Christ in all Cultures (2003), Studies in African Religion and Culture: A Critique of Methodologies (200

Philosophy in Culture by J. Tosam,Peter Takov Pdf

This book explores the symbiotic relationship between philosophy and culture. Every philosophy emerges as a reaction to, or as justification for a particular culture and it is for this reason that philosophy may differ from one culture to another. It argues that philosophy is an essential part of every culture. Philosophy is the means by which every culture provides itself with justification for its values, beliefs and worldview and also serves as a catalyst for progress. Philosophy critically questions and confronts established beliefs, customs, practices, and institutions of a society. As reflective critical thinking, philosophy is linked to a way of life; a form of enquiry intended to guide behaviour; a form of thinking that sharpens and broadens our intellectual horizon, scrutinizes our assumptions, and clarifies the beliefs and values by which we live. Philosophy helps to liberate the individual from the imprisonment of ignorance, prejudice, superstition, narrow-mindedness, and the despotism of custom. Culture constitutes the raw data, the laboratory from which philosophers do their analytic experimentation. Culture is considered as philosophy of the first order activity. The book maintains that any genuine global philosophy must include philosophical traditions from all cultures and regions of the world, as it is by seeking alternative philosophical answers to some of the thorniest problems facing humanity that we are most likely to find more lasting solutions to some global problems. In this commitment to a universal humanity, we cannot afford to depend on solutions from a single culture or from the most influential cultures.

Themes in Religion and Human Security in Africa by Joram Tarusarira,Ezra Chitando Pdf

This book reflects on major themes present at the interface between religion and human security in Africa. It probes the extent to which religion is both a threat to and a resource for human security in Africa by examining specific issues occurring across the continent. A team of contributors from across Africa provide valuable reflections on the conceptualisation and applicability of the concept of human security in the context of religion in Africa. Chapters highlight how themes such as knowledge systems, youth, education, race, development, sacred texts, the media, sexual diversity, health and others have implications for individual and group security. In order to bring these themes into perspective, chapters in the first section reflect on the conceptual, historical and contextual factors at play. The chapters that follow demonstrate the theories put forward by means of case studies from countries such as Zimbabwe, Kenya, Botswana and Ghana that look at African religion, Islam and Christianity. This is a detailed and informative volume that provides new insights into the discourse on religion and human security. As such, it will be of significant use to any scholar of Religion and Violence, Religion in Africa and Religious Studies, as well as African and Security Studies more generally.

The Bible in Africa by Gerald West,Musa Dube Pdf

Although the arrival of the Bible in Africa has often been a tale of terror, the Bible has become an African book. This volume explores the many ways in which Africans have made the Bible their own. The essays in this book offer a glimpse of the rich resources that constitute Africa's engagement with the Bible. Among the topics are: the historical development of biblical interpretation in Africa, the relationship between African biblical scholarship and scholarship in the West, African resources for reading the Bible, the history and role of vernacular translation in particular African contexts, the ambiguity of the Bible in Africa, the power of the Bible as text and symbol, and the intersections between class, race, gender, and culture in African biblical interpretation. The book also contains an extensive bibliography of African biblical scholarship. In fact, it is one of the most comprehensive collections of African biblical scholarship available in print. Introduction to African Religion by John S. Mbiti Pdf

These traditional reads are brimming with spirited characters and positive values--but with a little extra excitement and bite, so hold on to your hats! Written expressly for the middle grade struggling reader, the series does not contain strong language, edgy themes, or dysfunctional families. In fact, family is the main theme of these titles. And one particular Latino family is the focus with their uncanny knack for finding humor, hope, and colorful personalities--even in unusual circumstances. Written at the lowest reading levels, the 50-page story structure is straightforward and moves the reader through the text quickly and efficiently. They were trapped. Then Ana remembered the old stone church. It was nearby. She knew the old building was the safest place for her family. It could withstand the high winds and rising water.
