Prophetic Preaching by Leonora Tubbs Tisdale Pdf

Where have all the prophets gone? And why do preachers seem to shy away from prophetic witness? Astute preacher Leonora Tisdale considers these vexing questions while providing guidance and encouragement to pastors who want to recommit themselves to the task of prophetic witness. With a keen sensitivity to pastoral contexts, Tisdale's work is full of helpful suggestions and examples to help pastors structure and preach prophetic sermons, considered by many to be one of the most difficult tasks pastors are called to undertake.

Preaching from the Old Testament by Walter Brueggemann Pdf

In this new volume, prolific scholar Walter Brueggemann seeks to show Christian preachers how to consider the faith witnessed in several Old Testament traditions and to help them discover rich and suggestive connections to our contemporary faith challenges. The author also assumes that a wholesale sustained engagement with the Old Testament is worth the effort for the preacher. He recognizes what he calls the "sorry state" of Old Testament texts in the Revised Common Lectionary, which he claims often constitute a major disservice for the church and its preachers. The lectionary gerrymanders the Old Testament to make it serve other claims, most of the time not allowing it to have its own evangelical say. Brueggemann hopes that his exposition in this volume will evoke and energize fresh homiletical attention to the Old Testament, precisely because he believes the urgent work of the gospel in our society requires attentive listening to these ancient voices of bold insistent faith.

Major Messages from Minor Prophets by Jeffrey A. Ingraham Pdf

During the early part of 2019, our Sunday school lessons centered on the Old Testament prophets, particularly the minor prophets. It was a great challenge to understand their messages and the messages' relevancy for our times. It seemed as if there really were no significant differences in these books of prophecy, as the minor prophets all seemed to be saying the same thing. Of course, there are differences in the messages and ministries of the minor prophets, hence, my attempt to show so. My goal was to summarize the writings and ministries of the minor prophets and show their relevancy for today. This I did through a series of sermons that were initially delivered in the Calvary Baptist Church during the winter of 2019. My goal was to make the teachings of the minor prophets understandable to every segment of our membership. The approach was more inspirational than overly scholarly. Each chapter of the book is provocatively titled and begins with a story or illustration that centers on that particular subject. The intent was to reference something that the reader could relate to and see how the prophet addresses that matter. Of course, not every single detail of the prophet's message is included due to the constraints of time, etc. My hope is that the readers of this book will come to know God better and to have a relationship with him. They will see that in spite of people's imperfections, our God is perfect and faithful toward us. The minor prophets challenge us to live faithfully for God. To the extent I have been able to evoke this kind of response from my readers, I give all glory and honor to God.

Prophets, Pioneers And Possibilities by Richard A. Hasler Pdf

We have been called to travel lightly. We are on a journey of faith. None of us has arrived. We may remember a thrilling moment of decision when we first responded to the awakening of God's love for us... We never know in advance where submission to the kingship of Christ will lead us. -- from the sermon for Christ the King Sunday Richard A. Hasler draws upon countless incidents from contemporary settings to bring the words of the Minor Prophets and 2 Samuel to contemporary Christian believers. Using scriptures from nine texts on the Old Testament, this book provides as many sermons for use in the Common Lectionary. Sermon titles include: - The Dreamer Within You -- Joel 2:23-30 - When God's "No" Means "Yes" -- Habakkuk 1:1-3; 2:1-10 - Leaping for Joy -- Malachi 4:1-6 - No One Enters into the Kingdom... Save with Empty Hands -- 2 Samuel 5:1-5 Richard A. Hasler was organizing pastor of Pioneer Presbyterian Church, Belpre, Ohio, where he still serves. This is his second CSS book. Interpreting the Prophets by Aaron Chalmers Pdf

The prophetic books are some of the most captivating and fascinating texts of the Old Testament, but they are also some of the most misunderstood. Interpreting the Prophets equips the reader with the knowledge and skills they need to interpret the Prophets in a faithful and accurate fashion. Beginning with the nature of the prophetic role and prophetic books in Israel, Old Testament scholar Aaron Chalmers leads the reader through the various "worlds" of Israel's prophets—historical, social, theological and rhetorical— providing the basic contextual and background information needed both for sound and sensible exegesis, and for sensitive interpretation and application for today. He concludes with a helpful chapter giving guidelines for preaching from the Prophets—including advice on choosing the texts, making appropriate analogies, and the potential problems and common pitfalls to avoid.

The Practice of Prophetic Imagination by Walter Brueggemann Pdf

Walter Brueggemann declares that the necessary character of truly prophetic preaching today is "a contestation between narratives." If the dominant narrative of our time promotes national self-sufficiency (through militarism) and personal self-sufficiency (through consumerism), it must be opposed by a different narrative. Prophetic preaching takes its stand in a world claimed by a God who is gracious, uncompromisingand real. Brueggemann writes here for leaders in faith communities who bear the responsibility of preaching. He describes the discipline of a prophetic imagination, in an unflinchingly realistic, unwaveringly candid manner.

Loving God and Disturbing Men by Donald A. Leggett Pdf

Loving God and Disturbing Men is an excellent resource for preachers and teachers that provides a balance between technical scholarly commentaries and popular devotional works. Its unique strength lies in the author's ability to show the relevance of the prophets for the contemporary church and its ministry. Readers will appreciate the detailed scholarly treatment of the prophetic literature the author provides. But equally important, the author demonstrates that what the prophets said about God, evil, repentance, history, social justice and eschatology has the ring of immediacy for us. Moreover, the study is helpful in treating the lives of the prophets as models of spirituality in prayer, suffering and preaching. While the book is primarily for those who preach from the prophets, it is suitable for a much wider audience. "A book on preaching from the prophets is desperately needed today by the Christian audience if we are to be faithful in declaring the whole counsel of God to our contemporary generation. Professor Donald Leggett is to be commended on his desire to aid the Christian community and its proclaimers in advancing this cause. It is a pleasure to commend this work." -Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. "Here is a pump-primer and launch-pad for preachers. Dr. Leggett's aim is to show us the wisdom of the prophets in a way that will excite us an enable us to share what we have seen. I appreciate this book, for I think it will do its job. And the job is an important one " -J. I. Packer Donald A. Leggett (Th.D., Free University, Amsterdam) is Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Tyndale University College and Seminary in Toronto, Ontario. For 25 years he also served as a pastor and elder at Village Green Baptist Church in London, Ontario.
