Microbial Plant Pathogens-Detection and Disease Diagnosis: by P. Narayanasamy Pdf

The need for the development of techniques based on the characteristics of the viral proteins and genomic nucleic acids was realized in order to detect, identify, differentiate and quantify viruses in the infected plants/planting materials with or without symptoms of infection. Immunoassays have been successfully applied for the detection of viruses in crop and weed host plant species as well as in the vectors. Nucleic acid-based techniques have been demonstrated to be the most reliable and sensitive tests for detection, identification and differentiation of viruses and viroids present in plants and planting materials.. Inclusion of numerous protocols in appropriate chapters as appendix is a unique feature of this volume.

Diagnosis and Identification of Plant Pathogens by H.-W. Dehne,G. Adam,M. Diekmann,J. Frahm,A. Mauler-Machnik,P. van Halteren Pdf

The diagnosis and identification of plant pathogens provides the basis of plant pathology and phytomedicine. The Executive Committee of the EUROPEAN FOUNDATION FOR PLANT PATHOLOGY (EFPP) had no problem to identify this actual th topic as topic for the 4th Symposium, which was held from September 8 to the 12th at the University of Bonn. It was suggested to have introductory papers and papers on actual research on recently identified topics. The development of diagnosis and pathogen identification is very important to keep plants healthy and to provide a successful and efficient disease control. On the other hand the most important task of the EUROPEAN FOUNDATION FOR PLANT PATHOLOGY is to improve the international communication, especially in the European hemisphere. Another important duty is to provide the contact between all associated societies - of specific importance seems to be the contact to societies and colleagues from eastern European countries. Times have changed and gratefully we are obliged to hold the contact to our colleagues from the east. During the last meeting we could hold this contact to a certain extent and this should be a premise for the future. th During 1998 the EUROPEAN FOUNDATION FOR PLANT PATHOLOGY will join the 7 International Congress of Plant Pathology held at Edinburgh from August 9-14, 1998. th The 5 Symposium of the EUROPEAN FOUNDATION FOR PLANT PATHOLOGY will be arranged by our Italian colleagues.

Grapevine Viruses: Molecular Biology, Diagnostics and Management by Baozhong Meng,Giovanni P. Martelli,Deborah A. Golino,Marc Fuchs Pdf

The domestication of grapes dates back five thousand years ago and has spread to nearly all continents. In recent years, grape acreage has increased dramatically in new regions, including the United States of America, Chile, Asia (China and India), and Turkey. A major limiting factor to the sustained production of premium grapes and wines is infections by viruses. The advent of powerful molecular and metagenomics technologies, such as molecular cloning and next generation sequencing, allowed the discovery of new viruses from grapes. To date, grapevine is susceptible to 64 viruses that belong to highly diverse taxonomic groups. The most damaging diseases include: (1) infectious degeneration; (2) leafroll disease complex; and (3) rugose wood complex. Recently, two new disease syndromes have been recognized: Syrah decline and red blotch. Losses due to fanleaf degeneration are estimated at $1 billion annually in France alone. Other diseases including leafroll, rugose wood, Syrah de cline and red blotch can result in total crop loss several years post-infection. This situation is further exacerbated by mixed infections with multiple viruses and other biotic as well as adverse abiotic environmental conditions, such as drought and winter damage, causing even greater destruction. The book builds upon the last handbook (written over twenty years ago) on the part of diagnostics and extensively expands its scope by inclusion of molecular biology aspects of select viruses that are widespread and economically most important. This includes most current information on the biology, transmission, genome replication, transcription, subcellular localization, as well as virus-host interactions. It also touches on several novel areas of scientific inquiry. It also contains suggested directions for future research in the field of grapevine virology.

Testing Methods for Seed-transmitted Viruses by Sven Erik Albrechtsen Pdf

This book provides a practical guide to the commonly used detection methods for seed-transmitted viruses and viroids affecting both tropical and non-tropical crops. The first part describes important aspects of seed-transmitted viral diseases. The second and main part contains principles of the detection techniques and step-by-step protocols accompanied by method optimization and comments. Most of the described techniques can be equally applied to plant viruses and viroids other than seedborne ones. This book will be of significant interest to those working in seed testing laboratories and students and teachers within plant pathology and seed science.

Diagnosis of Plant Virus Diseases by R. E. F. Matthews Pdf

Diagnosis of Plant Virus Diseases presents a comprehensive summary of methods currently available for the diagnosis of plant diseases caused by viruses and viroids. Up-to-date literature references are provided, brief accounts of the basis for particular methods are included, and detailed protocols are presented. Procedures discussed include the use of host plants, electron microscopy of in vitro preparations, serological procedures (especially forms of ELISA, monoclonal antibodies, serological specific electron microscopy, and immunoblotting), and nucleic acid hybridization procedures. Strategies are outlined for implicating virus-like pathogens as causes of diseases of unknown etiology, and problems involved in identifying complexes of transmission-dependent and helper viruses are discussed. The book will be extremely useful for phytopathologists, plant virologists, and research students and workers in plant virology laboratories and diagnostic plant pathology laboratories.
