Shay Elliott and Collected Short Stories by John Flanagan Pdf

In his collection of short stories, the author charts the life of Shay Elliott, Ireland's first professional cyclist, as he struggles to compete against riders in a peloton saturated with performance enhancing drugs. After he returned to Ireland he died in a shotgun accident while making plans to coach amateur cyclists. We are taken to a meeting of Washington politicians, which culminated in the unlawful invasion of Iraq; a tragic, obscene war encouraged by Pentagon hawks and self-serving gentlemen of the right. Commandeered oil, outsourced waterboarding and enhanced torture techniques in defiance of Article One of the Geneva Convention, are imprimatured in cautious Machiavellian dialogue. We witness the insane cluster bombing of the virtually defenceless city of Baghdad; with its medieval clay and plaster dwellings that crumble to dust in air raids. We visit broken, mutilated children in Baghdad's Al Kindi Hospital. We are taken to a chateau on the outskirts of Paris, the headquarters of the Aryan Brotherhood in France. The Aryans have devised a new strategy, a panacea to erase the simmering tensions of class warfare in French society. The goal is to create a new social order by restoring the privileged bourgeois to power; condemning the general populace to serfdom, through the science of eugenics. In 'Up at the Palace', Borstal detainees face the darkness of unspoken cruelties; a dignitary of the church faces his demons. We visit Alaska, the last remaining wilderness left on earth. Raging storms in the Bering Sea threaten life and limb aboard the good ship ' Tacoma.' A super sleuth, Marc Claudel, of the French Surete, becomes involved in terrorism and murder.

Cycling South Dublin & Wicklow by Ian O'Riordan Pdf

From the doorstep of Dublin city, there is easy access to a cycling haven of deep glens, forested mountains and wild scenery, including the Wicklow Mountains. This guidebook journeys through some of the country's best-known tourist attractions, such as Glendalough, and reveals lesser-known points of interest like the Shay Elliott memorial to the first Irish rider to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France. The graded routes suit all abilities, and are illustrated with colour maps, photos and gradient graphs, with information on the many natural landmarks and historical sites en route. The historic Military Road is central to many of the cycles. Constructed in the aftermath of the 1798 Rebellion, it runs from Rathfarnham in south Dublin to Aughavannagh in south-west Wicklow, with a side arm from Enniskerry to Glencree, and from the Sally Gap to Roundwood. Try your hand as a Tour de France competitor, revisiting the 1998 stage, which raced through the heart of the Wicklow Mountains, finishing in the Phoenix Park. Surprising insights and useful tips are shared throughout, allowing cyclists to enjoy the wonders and challenges of south Dublin and Wicklow.

The Daily Telegraph Book of the Tour de France by Martin Smith Pdf

A man, a bike and the open road. What could be simpler? Certainly not the Tour de France, the annual travelling circus which for more than a century has been the ultimate test of sporting endurance. There’s been pain. There’s been joy. There’s been death. There’s been derring-do of mythic proportions. There’s been cheating. There’ve been drugs. There’ve always been drugs. And there’s always been the Daily Telegraph. On the peaks of Mont Ventoux, Alpe D’Huez and Col du Galibier, in amongst the picnicking, partying crowds, whizzing through London in 2007’s wondrous opening stage, dropping in and out of the peloton, the Telegraph has been there for every turn of the wheel. The book features eyewitness accounts of cycling greats Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain and Lance Armstrong, along with details of the contest’s darker side – including the 1967 death of Tom Simpson and the stain of doping. Boasting contemporary, firsthand reports from leading cycling correspondents including J.B Wadley, David Saunders and Phil Liggett, this book captures the full drama of the tour. Chris Boardman and David Millar provide views from the saddle; James Cracknell swaps his boat for a bike on a pre-race reconnaissance mission; Paul Hayward catalogues the 1998 ‘Tour of Shame’; while Brendan Gallagher eulogises the colossi who bestrode the race, and searches for their modern-day successors. Together, they chronicle the greatest show on two wheels. Martin Smith was formerly assistant sports editor and sports writer at the Daily Telegraph, where he worked for more than twenty years. An enthusiastic cyclist in his youth, he graduated to the less arduous four wheels as soon as he was able.

Froome by Michael Vlismas Pdf

From the day he joined a ramshackle Kenyan cycling club made up of orphans and street children, Chris Froome was destined for greatness. Froome: the Ride of his Life chronicles Froome's journey from the dusty mountain tracks outside Nairobi to the historic roads of the world's most famous bicycle race and his victory in the 2013 Tour de France. It's a journey that begins by learning to fix punctures in a Kenyan village under the mentorship of his long-time friend David Kinjah. It's the story of a boy who once sold avocados on the side of the road and lived with his mother in the servants' quarters at the back of a lavish homestead in Nairobi, but who had a free spirit and a drive to follow his dream. From his challenges and triumphs on the road to the tragedy of his mother's death, Froome emerges as a man apart but loyal and compassionate to those nearest to him as he sought to capture road cycling's ultimate prize - the Tour de France. From Africa to the Alps, this is the story of Africa's greatest cycling moment. This is the ride of Chris Froome's life.
