Increasingly, German Studies programs include courses on the Holocaust, but suitable course materials are often difficult to find. Teachers in higher education will therefore very much welcome this volume that examines and reflects both the practical and theoretical aspects of teaching about the Holocaust. Though designed primarily by and for North American Germanists and German Studies specialists, this book will prove no less useful for teachers in other countries and associated disciplines. It presents and describes successful Holocaust-related courses that have been developed and taught at U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities, demonstrating the depth, breadth, and variety of such offerings, while remaining mindful of the instructor's special moral responsibilities. Reflecting as it does, the innovative Holocaust pedagogy in North American German and German Studies, this collection serves the needs of educators who wish to revise or update their existing Holocaust courses and of those who are seeking guidance, ideas, and resources to enable them to develop their first Holocaust course or unit.

Hell by Timothy Pitts Pdf

Most Christians have, at one time or another, wondered what heaven will really be like. But what about hell? Have you ever wondered what the place prepared for the devil and his followers will be like? Do the countless cartoon drawings we've all seen accurately portray what hell is really like? Or has the humorous content of those cartoons confused us as to what it is really like and subtly removed our revulsion for such an awful place? Most of us would rather not think about hell, but if it was important enough for Jesus to discuss, then maybe we should take another look at this unpleasant topic. A clear understanding of hell can, and should, be a powerful motivator for obedience to Jesus' final command to go and make disciples and thus play a part in saving as many as possible from an eternity separated from God. In his book, Hell: Shedding Light on a Dark Place, author Timothy Pitts uses a laid-back, easy-to-read style to provide a biblical look at what hell will be like. You'll discover that "the main thing about hell"-while a truth that is a simple no-brainer-has far-reaching implications. As you read, ask God to change your heart and to give you a greater compassion for those who are rushing through life towards such an awful fate.

Where Light in Darkness Lies by Veronica della Dora Pdf

An illuminating history of both real-life lighthouses and the beacons of literature and art alike, shedding light on the multifaceted power of these liminal structures. Suspended between sea and sky, battered by the waves and the wind, lighthouses mark the battle lines between the elements. They guard the boundaries between the solid human world and the primordial chaos of the waters; between stability and instability; between the known and the unknown. As such, they have a strange, universal appeal that few other manmade structures possess. Engineered to draw the gaze of sailors, lighthouses have likewise long attracted the attention of soldiers and saints, artists and poets, novelists and filmmakers, colonizers and migrants, and, today more than ever, heritage tourists and developers. Their evocative locations, isolation, and resilience, have turned these structures into complex metaphors, magnets for stories. This book explores the rich story of the lighthouse in the human imagination.

Shedding Light on the Darkness, Dealing with the Issues of Suicide by James Michael Smith,Beverly Smith,Kelly Solheim Pdf

***This edition is a revision of the first. I rewrote it with the mindset of making it an easier read by cutting out a lot of the busyness of the first edition. My Story is better detailed, chronologically smoother and does not have the unnecessary topical breaks. The optional questions have been eliminated. I believe the reader is already coming to the text with their own questions. Again, I believe this edition will be more valuable because of the changes that were made and it takes only about 1 1/2 hours to read.*** This work was written out of genuine concern. It is intended to give hope, insight, support and healing to those who have been touched by suicide. My main goal is to aid in suicide prevention through enabling the reader to identify, help and save both those who are contemplating suicide and those who are likely to ponder it in the future. I believe that I have an insider's view of this devastating darkness called suicide. I have battled with it for over 20 years. My compelling desire is to help, support, and create a healing environment for those who have been destroyed by suicide and to aid in prevention whenever possible. In order to get the most out of this book, it's important to read it with an open mind. It has been written from my worldview and personal beliefs. These beliefs have kept me alive over the years and they continue to support me on a daily basis. A compilation of stories will be used throughout this book to help us understand this dark act we call suicide. It is my hope that you will find it both interesting and encouraging. I do not pretend to fully understand this enormous subject and this book is not intended to be all inclusive. My intent is to show there is hope for the hopeless, light for those in darkness, truth for those being lied to, and forgiveness for the guilt-laden. Let There Be Light in Darkness by Asif Shakoor Pdf

Laughter is the light that seeps into the darkest moment of our lives. It is the only wisdom that brings us closer to our human nature. Let There Be Light In Darkness is a culmination of twenty-five years of reflection on meaningful existence and seeking simplicity in truth and purpose. The sole purpose in writing poetry is to awaken the conscious mind and to let the human spirit live in the wholeness of reality. As a physician, I have used poetry to heal the ailing soul by using a holistic and integrative approach to medicine. Words have the power to move the masses and change perception of reality so that humanity can strive toward greater good. Truth can only be known once we shed light into darkness and come out of our shadowy existence fully formed. Let There Be Light In Darkness is my way of looking deep into life’s finite existence and walking toward my end with every moment of my beginning.

Dark Nights, Bright Lights by Susanne Bach,Folkert Degenring Pdf

Light and darkness shape our perception of the world. This is true in a literal sense, but also metaphorically: in theology, philosophy, literature and the arts the light of day signifies life, safety, knowledge and all that is good, while the darkness of the night suggests death, danger, ignorance and evil. A closer inspection, however, reveals that things are not quite so clear cut and that light and darkness cannot be understood as simple binary opposites. On a biological level, for example, daylight and darkness are inseparable factors in the calibration of our circadian rhythms, and a lack of periodical darkness appears to be as contrary to health as a lack of exposure to sunlight. On a cultural level, too, night and darkness are far from being universally condemnable: in fiction, drama and poetry the darkness of the night allows not only nightmares but also dreams, it allows criminals to ply their trade and allows lovers to meet, it allows the pursuit of pleasure as well as deep thought, it allows metamorphoses, transformations and transgressions unthinkable in the light of day. But night is not merely darkness. The night gains significance as an alternative space, as an ‘other of the day’, only when it is at least partially illuminated. The volume examines the interconnection of night, darkness and nocturnal illumination across a broad range of literary texts. The individual essays examine historically specific light conditions in literature, tracing the symbolic and metaphoric content of darkness and illumination and the attitudes towards them.

Dark Tourism by Glenn Hooper,John J. Lennon Pdf

Dark Tourism, as well as other terms such as Thanatourism and Grief Tourism, has been much discussed in the past two decades. This volume provides a comprehensive exploration of the subject from the point of view of both practice - how Dark Tourism is performed, what practical and physical considerations exist on site - and interpretation - how Dark Tourism is understood, including issues pertaining to ethics, community involvement and motivation. It showcases a wide range of examples, drawing on the expertise of academics with management and consultancy experience, as well as those from within the social sciences and humanities. Contributors discuss the historical development of Dark Tourism, including its earlier incarnations across Europe, but they also consider its future as a strand within academic discourse, as well as its role within tourism development. Case studies include holocaust sites in Germany, as well as analysis of the legacy of war in places such as the Channel Islands and Malta. Ethical and myriad marketing considerations are also discussed in relation to Ireland, Brazil, Rwanda, Romania, U.K., Nepal and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This book covers issues that are of interest to students and staff across a spectrum of disciplines, from management to the arts and humanities, including conservation and heritage, site management, marketing and community participation.

Sacred Darkness by Holley Moyes Pdf

Caves have been used in various ways across human society, but despite the persistence within popular culture of the iconic caveman, deep caves were never used primarily as habitation sites for early humans. Rather, in both ancient and contemporary contexts, caves have served primarily as ritual spaces. In Sacred Darkness, contributors use archaeological evidence as well as ethnographic studies of modern ritual practices to envision the cave as place of spiritual and ideological power that emerges as a potent venue for ritual practice. Covering the ritual use of caves in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, Mesoamerica, and the US Southwest and Eastern woodlands, this book brings together case studies by prominent scholars whose research spans from the Paleolithic period to the present day. These contributions demonstrate that cave sites are as fruitful as surface contexts in promoting the understanding of both ancient and modern religious beliefs and practices. This state-of-the-art survey of ritual cave use will be one of the most valuable resources for understanding the role of caves in studies of religion, sacred landscape, or cosmology and a must-read for any archaeologist interested in caves.
