Shopping with a Conscience by Rajani Achar,David Nitkin Pdf

Shopping with a conscience is a ground-breaking book (John Wiley & Sons, forthcoming May 1996) that focuses on the corporate social responsibility of major retailers and suppliers of goods and services in the Canadian marketplace. This includes 115 of Canada's largest grocery retailers, banks and trust companies, gas stations, drugstore chains, fast food chains, car rental companies, hotels and entertainment venues, and specialty retailers of hardware, sporting goods, travel and business services, office supplies and the like. Retailers are chosen for inclusion in the book with a national scope in mind: the goal is a guide of interest to shoppers, small businesspeople, and procurement professionals from coast to coast. The text will focus on reporting and analyzing comparative performance on a range of ethicalissues of most interest to Canadians. Such issues include environmental management and performance, hiring and promotion of women and minorities, job creation, and progressive community relations, as well as the percentage of Canadian ownership and decision-making of each company profiled. The tone of Shopping With a Conscience is not political correctness. Readers will not be told how to think. Rather, they'll be given the kind of data to allow them to reward the good: to make their own decisions about where to bank, shop, and rent. The approach is to provide detailed, original and useful information to make book purchasers feel good about themselves, their shopping behaviour, and the consequences of their choiceof retailer.

Shopping for Change by Louis Hyman,Joseph Tohill Pdf

Consuming with a conscience is one of the fastest growing forms of political participation worldwide. Every day we make decisions about how to spend our money and, for the socially conscious, these decisions matter. Political consumers "buy green" for the environment or they "buy pink" to combat breast cancer. They boycott Taco Bell to support migrant workers or Burger King to save the rainforest. But can we overcome the limitations of consumer identity, the conservative pull of consumer choice, co-optation by corporate marketers, and other pitfalls of consumer activism in order to marshal the possibilities of consumer power? Can we, quite literally, shop for change? Shopping for Change brings together the historical and contemporary perspectives of academics and activists to show readers what has been possible for consumer activists in the past and what might be possible for today's consumer activists.Contributors Kyle Asquith, University of Windsor; Dawson Barrett, Del Mar College; Lawrence Black, University of York; Madeline Brambilla, Northeastern University; Joshua Carreiro, Springfield Technical Community College, Springfield, MA; H. Fulfillment Using Real Conscience by M D N S Xavier,N. S. Xavier Pdf

Winner of The National Best Book 2009 Awards(in Health:Psychology/Mental Health category) sponsored by USA Book News.Fulfillment Using Real Conscience is a groundbreaking work of insight, inspiration and practical guidance for psychological and spiritual fulfillment. With originality and depth, the author distinguishes between our two inner guides--the real conscience which uses reason and the Golden rule, and the socially programmed "superego" which tends to deviate more or less from conscience. Conscience is our best guide as we make choices in handling our needs like power, pleasure, esteem and meaning. Superego or feelings connected with needs can mislead us and cause numerous problems ranging from abuses, addictions, break ups and break downs and many diseases and disorders to extremism and violence. This book is easy to read and provides a good perspective on fulfilling our needs using conscience and keeping feelings and superego in balance. This unique work is particularly timely to promote peace and well-being in individuals, couples, communities and countries, as we face widespread conflicts, deep crises, and wonderful opportunities for transformation. Ethical Consumption by Alex Hiller,Helen Goworek Pdf

Arising from foundations in green and eco-consumerism, ethical consumption is a multidisciplinary area of research. This shortform book presents an expert view of the empirical evidence on ethical consumption, incorporating perspectives from marketing, psychology and sociology. It takes both a historical and a thematic perspective, covering definitions of ethical consumption, typologies of ethical consumer practices, successes brought about from consumer actions and the current challenges. It also focuses on the emergence of contemporary perspectives on ethical consumer behaviour from three discrete perspectives: those focusing on consumer segmentation (the profiling of ethical consumers), those which take a psychological approach (the decision- making processes which underpin ethical consumption) and those which are sociological in nature (the identities and practices which underpin ethical consumption). The book finally synthesises these perspectives in the context of the ‘problems’ that are often claimed to exist, such as the existence of the ‘attitude– behaviour gap’, and provides conclusions which make recommendations for practice and further research. It will be of interest to academics and students of marketing, consumption and related fields, as well as to practitioners and policymakers who want to understand more about the evidence pertaining to ethical consumers, what motivates them, and how to encourage and educate them to consume more ethically.
