A Short History of Mexico by John Patrick McHenry Pdf
In this concise, readable account, the history of one of the Western Hemisphere’s most important countries is recounted, from the first recorded appearance of early man around 10,000 B.C. down to the present day. Through the pages of this book move the men, famous and infamous, who have Mexican history; Montezuma and Cortes; the Spanish viceroys whose downfall began when the priest Hidalgo issues his famous “Cry of Dolores”; the Emperor Agustin de Iturbide, first ruler of an independent Mexico; General Santa Anna, who fought and lost the Texas Revolution and the Mexican War; the ill-fated Emperor Maximilian and Benito Juarez, who overthrew him; Porfirio Diaz and Francisco Madero; Huerta, Pancho Villa, Carranza, and Zapata, who were involved in the troubles of the early decades of this century; and the president since 1920; among them, Obregon, Calles, Cardenas, Aleman, and the present incumbent, Lopez Mateos.
Our new brief text highlights Mexico's stunning geographical, ethnic, and social diversity. In the sixteenth century, diseases brought by the Spanish conquerors wiped out almost 90 per cent of the indigenous population. Since then, Mexico - first as a colony of Spain and, after 1821, as an independent nation - has exported thousands of tons of silver, affecting currencies and prices as far away as China and India. In the century following independence, Mexico was invaded six times by three different European nations (Britain, France, and Spain) as well as the United States, the latter conflict resulting in the loss of half of Mexico's territory. More recently, Mexico has played an ever more important part in the world economy. Focused primarily on the period since independence in 1821, this brief text effectively summarizes Mexico's rich history, delineating some of the major processes at the national level and hinting at regional and local counter-currents.
A Short History of Mexico by Arthur Howard Noll Pdf
Of recent years there has been a great output of literature bearing on Mexico- most of it, unfortunately, of the tourist type, distorted and jaundiced. There is, indeed, real need for a reliable popular history of Mexico, and, notwithstanding the two books of Mr. Noll, the need is still unsatisfied. His second, which has to do with the nineteenth century, is in one sense an expansion of that part of the 'Short History' covering the same period, and very much improves it. In the 'Short History' the author set out to write a guide-book: "he at first thought of offering his work to the tourists in Mexico, to aid them in enjoying the sights of that country. This idea was abandoned after the manuscript was in the hands of the publishers, in deference to the opinions of others that the book would be beneficial to the public generally, no less in need of such a history than the tourist." The result is that we have neither guidebook nor history, but a potpourri of unnamable stuff. The work was first issued in 1890, and this purports to be a revised edition; but how it ever came to be printed 11 second time is the wonder of it. It is proof, at least, that the public has more interest in our neighboring republic than discrimination. Mr. Noll sets out to portray the origins of the aborigines of Mexico, tracing the Aztecs from the "cliff-houses of Colorado and New Mexico" to the valley of Mexico, where. having seen "an eagle standing upon a nopal (prickly-pear cactus) strangling a serpent," they founded the city of Tenochtitlan-afterward the City of Mexico! From this one can judge how successfully this early and fascinating story is disposed of. The Conquest is discussed with no insight into the general history of the period. To attempt the narrative of it without some knowledge of the relation it bore to the expeditions that everywhere penetrated the coasts of the New World, from Labrador to the Orinoco, is to miss the mark completely. Separate it, if you please, from the larger world movement of exploration and colonization, but give us its setting in the history of Spain; it will lose none of its glamour. But even this is denied us. --The Nation, Volume 78
“An excellent account and analysis of the Mexican Revolution, its background, its course, and its legacy . . . an important contribution [and] a must read!” (Samuel Farber, author of Cuba Since the Revolution of 1959). The most significant event in modern Mexican history, the Mexican Revolution of 1910-20 remains a subject of debate and controversy. Why did it happen? What makes it distinctive? Was it even a revolution at all? In The Mexican Revolution, Stuart Easterling offers a concise chronicle of events from the fall of the longstanding Díaz regime to Gen. Obregón’s ascent to the presidency. In a comprehensible style, aimed at students and general readers, Easterling sorts through the revolution’s many internal conflicts, and asks whether or not its leaders achieved their goals.
