The Siege of University City, the Dreyfus Case of America (Classic Reprint) by Sidney Morse Pdf

Excerpt from The Siege of University City, the Dreyfus Case of America On taking up the subject of printing this volume with the same publisher, by letter, a few months later, I received this reply: I have not read the book, but if the plan which you and I discussed some time ago with David Graham Phillips had been carried out, I think that a sale of a million copies would have proved a very mod crate estimate. There is no doubt but that there exists in this Lewis case one of the most gigantic business romances that has ever hap pened. I know that you see it in that way, and I assume you have had the book so written as to get the full benefit of the opportunity. But, as I told you when we were discussing this matter with Phillips, Lewis has made so many strong enemies throughout the country that, while I sympathize with him and believe in him and his integrity, I should not be willing to run any risk of finan cial loss in the handling of this story. I do not see what could be done to queer the sale of your book, if it is properly writ ten; but with the knowledge of what was done to Lewis, I do not want to get my fingers burned in that fire. Inability to command the services of the journalists employed by the great magazines, and the unwillingness of periodical publishers to take up the sub j ect on their own initiative, must be the writer's apology for ven turing to break a lance in this arena. University City, Missouri by John A. Wright Pdf

In 1904, from a plot of land that would soon become University City, eccentric publisher Edwin Gardner Lewis shone the beam of what he claimed was the world's largest searchlight over the World's Fair in nearby St. Louis. Several years later, he claimed an even greater possession: a city, created around his publishing complex, complete with his own mayoral office, wide boulevards, and beautiful residences. The story of University City is one of urban wonder: from the city's "Hilltop Neighbor" and namesake, Washington University, to the diversity showcased in today's University City. The historic images in this volume illustrate the area's founding and development, from the largest printing press of the time, capable of producing 300,000 eight-page newspapers an hour, to the lion sculptures at the city's famed "Gates of Opportunity," standing proud as the city's everlasting symbol.

Fraud by Edward J. Balleisen Pdf

A comprehensive history of fraud in America, from the early nineteenth century to the subprime mortgage crisis In America, fraud has always been a key feature of business, and the national worship of entrepreneurial freedom complicates the task of distinguishing salesmanship from deceit. In this sweeping narrative, Edward Balleisen traces the history of fraud in America—and the evolving efforts to combat it—from the age of P. T. Barnum through the eras of Charles Ponzi and Bernie Madoff. This unprecedented account describes the slow, piecemeal construction of modern institutions to protect consumers and investors—from the Gilded Age through the New Deal and the Great Society. It concludes with the more recent era of deregulation, which has brought with it a spate of costly frauds, including corporate accounting scandals and the mortgage-marketing debacle. By tracing how Americans have struggled to foster a vibrant economy without encouraging a corrosive level of cheating, Fraud reminds us that American capitalism rests on an uneasy foundation of social trust.

The Quest for Utopia in Twentieth-Century America by Timothy Miller Pdf

This book is the long-anticipated first volume of a two-volume work that will chronicle intentional communities in the twentieth century. Timothy Miller's chronological account is likely to be the standard work on the subject. Communities of the early twentieth century were often obscure and short-lived enterprises that left little trace of themselves. Historical accounts of them are few, and the ephemera such ventures produced have rarely been collected. Miller first looks at the older groups that were operating until I 900. He explores their impact of the early twentieth-century art colonies, and then turns to a decade-by-decade discussion of many dozens of new groups formed up to 1960. His comprehensive perspective—a synopsis of the first sixty years of this century—has never before been undertaken in the study of communal groups.
