South Africa and the Transvaal War (Vol. 1-8) by Louis Creswicke Pdf

South Africa and the Transvaal War in eight volumes is a historical account of The Second Boer War fought between the British Empire and two independent Boer states, the South African Republic (Republic of Transvaal) and the Orange Free State, over the Empire's influence in South Africa. Initial Boer attacks were successful, and although British reinforcements later reversed these, the war continued for years with Boer guerrilla warfare, until harsh British counter-measures including a scorched earth policy brought the Boers to terms. The work is divided in eight volumes, first of which covering the period from the First Boer War to the beginning of the Second Boer War. Following six volumes deal with the Second Boer War and the last volume is dedicated to the future of South Africa after the war ended. Table of Contents: Vol. 1: From the Foundation of Cape Colony to the Boer Ultimatum of 9th Oct. 1899 Vol. 2: From the Commencement of the War to the Battle of Colenso, 15th Dec. 1899 Vol. 3: From the Battle of Colenso, 15th Dec. 1899, to Lord Roberts's Advance into the Free State, 12th Feb. 1900 Vol. 4: From Lord Roberts' Entry into the Free State to the Battle of Karree Vol. 5: From the Disaster at Koorn Spruit to Lord Roberts's Entry into Pretoria Vol. 6: From the Occupation of Pretoria to Mr. Kruger's Departure from South Africa, with a Summarized Account of the Guerilla War to March 1901 Vol. 7: The Guerilla War, from February 1901 to the Conclusion of Hostilities Vol. 8: South Africa and Its Future

Boom by Russell Miller Pdf

Hugh 'Boom' Trenchard was embarrassed by being described as 'The Father of the Royal Air Force' - he thought others were more deserving. But the reality was that no man did more to establish the world's first independent air force and ensure its survival in the teeth of fierce opposition from both the Admiralty and the War Office. Born in Taunton in 1873, Trenchard struggled at school, not helped by the shame of his solicitor father's bankruptcy when he was sixteen. He failed entrance examinations to both the Royal Navy and the Army several times, eventually obtaining a commission through the 'back door' of the militia. After service in India, South Africa - where he was seriously wounded - and Nigeria, he found his destiny when he joined the fledgling Royal Flying Corps in 1912, where he was soon known as 'Boom' thanks to his stentorian voice. Quick to recognise the huge potential aircraft offered in future conflicts, he rose rapidly to command the RFC in France during the First World War despite handicaps that would have blighted conventional military careers: he was obstinate, tactless, inarticulate and chronically unable to remember names - yet he was able to inspire unflagging loyalty among all ranks. Despite his conspicuous distrust of politicians, he served as a successful Chief of the Air Staff for a decade after the war and then, at the personal request of the King, took over as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, which he reorganised and reformed. He never wavered in his belief that mastery of the air could only be achieved by relentless offensive action, or in his determined advocacy of strategic bombing. His most enduring legacy was the creation of the finest air force in the world, engendered with the spirit that won the Battle of Britain.

The White Tribe of Africa by David Harrison Pdf

To their many detractors, Afrikaners are impractical, wild-eyed, racist fanatics. To their less numerous supporters, they are fervent anti-Communist crusaders, safeguarding stability and progress at the tip of the 'dark continent'. These strongly held, politically charged, and incompatible views make it virtually impossible for outsiders to distance themselves sufficiently, both intellectually and psychologically, from the situation in South Africa to achieve any real understanding of the Afrikaner's world-view. In this basically non-judgmental book, David Harrison offers the general public badly needed insights into how and why Afrikaners see the world as they do. This work goes a long way towards substituting understanding for invective.

A Pocket Essential Short History of the Victorian Era by Gordon Kerr Pdf

It began with the horse-drawn carriage and ended with the aeroplane, an era, beginning in the 1830s and ending with the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, that saw the British Empire – the largest the world had seen – dominate the world. British ingenuity in the fields of technological development and the heavy industry of its Industrial Revolution led to Britain being dubbed ‘the workshop of the world’ while its Royal Navy policed the world’s oceans helping to create what has become known as a ‘Pax Britannica’. A Short History of the Victorian Era details the sweeping social and economic changes that took place during this period but also examines the events of the time and the lives of the eminent Victorians who contributed so much to British success - men and women such as Florence Nightingale, Isombard Kingdom Brunel, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Charles Darwin. A Short History of the Victorian Era is the story of the greatest period in British history, a period that still resonates in today’s Britain. Praise for Gordon Kerr 'Factual and even-handed, Kerr presents a fair-minded introduction of basic Chinese history' - Booklist 'Thoroughly rewarding' - Travelmag 'Informative, fascinating and extremely well-researched...Gordon Kerr's book is a mini masterpiece' - ABC Brisbane

South Africa and the Transvaal War, Vol.8 (of 8) (Illustrations) by Various Pdf

Everyone who has followed the story of the War in South Africa from start to finish will assuredly have acquired a keen and lasting interest in the land which has been won by the expenditure of so much blood and treasure. Earnestly will he discuss in his mind all questions connected with the development of the New Dominions of the King, and vigilantly will he watch every action of the Government in regard to them. In order rightly to estimate the difficulties to be overcome and the issues to be hoped for, and to follow these questions with complete apprehension, it is necessary to be familiar with their aspect in every possible light. To this end, the Editor has invited the co-operation of various well-known Authorities, each of whom has kindly contributed his opinion on matters coming within his special experience. The Publishers claim, therefore, that in this Volume is collected the cream of modern thought, furnished at first-hand by those whose mastery of their subject, and whose interest in the Empire, render them competent to instruct in the intricacies of the South African problems, with which for some time to come we must stand face-to-face. That these writers do not on all points entirely agree is a matter for congratulation, as readers are thus enabled to view the political panorama from every reasonable standpoint, and weigh the pros and cons of their arguments with perspicuity and without prejudice. At the present juncture, when Mr. Chamberlain, the greatest of Colonial Secretaries, is visiting South Africa, the Publishers are convinced that this Volume is the most valuable book on the new Colonies that has yet been offered to the Public.
