Sketches of Mexico (Classic Reprint) by John Wesley Butler Pdf

Excerpt from Sketches of Mexico Of the Mexican people, with their progress, their genius, and their aspirations, with their possibilities and prospects. Of books on Mexico published in English during the present generation the most were written by hasty travelers or conventional compilers, whose views and portraitures are inevitably immature, partial, or exaggerated. Their more important and characteristic qualities, gifts, and aims, lie too deeply in the nature of the Mexican people to be clearly discerned and duly appreciated by the passing tour ist or the nonresident compiler. The richest treas ures Of information, too, regarding their traditions and history, their struggles, conflicts, and achieve ments, are tomes in Spanish, Italian, or other lan guages not Often either accessible or intelligible to such writers. Sketches of Travels in South America, Mexico and California (Classic Reprint) by L. M. Schaeffer Pdf

Excerpt from Sketches of Travels in South America, Mexico and California While pursuing a journey to and from California, some years since, and during my sojourn there, I kept a daily record of "what I saw and did." It was a source of great interest and pleasure to me, especially as it was written and continued at the desire of the dear and valued friend to whom this book is dedicated. And being a stranger, wandering among strangers, often deprived of all congenial society, it became my chief delight to note down my impressions of the countries I visited. Of course, my recollections of events and occurrences are stronger and more vivid than they would otherwise have been, and since my return many questions having been asked by acquaintances relative to a miners life &c., frequent reference to my journal has been made. One of the editors of a religious paper, who had often listened to my reminiscences of a life among the miners, solicited me to contribute articles for his paper, which appeared under the signature of Quartz: and were continued until I had communicated the principal incidents of my three years absence. These articles, it gives me pleasure to say, were favorably received, and I have been frequently requested to publish them in book form. They are now offered to the public, with diffidence and some little hesitancy - and while they may possess no literary merit, still a full and correct history of events which came under my own observation, will, it is hoped, compensate for other deficiencies. Excerpt from Sketches From the Mountains of Mexico I write from these mountains, the heart of the Sierra Madre. This place has an altitude of eight thousand feet, and to the south and west for more than two hundred miles the mountains ex tend, and to the north for five hundred or more. Parral, a city of some fifteen thousand inhabitants, is distant nearly two hundred miles to the north east, and Culiacan, the capital of the adjoining State, Sinaloa, containing nearly' eighteen thousand people, is two hundred miles to the south. From those two places all freight comes to this and other mountain points, packed on the backs of mules and that other animal called here a burro, but. Art-Making from Mexico to China (Classic Reprint) by Jean Charlot Pdf

Excerpt from Art-Making From Mexico to China There is a maxim of Delacroix's that has helped lead astray many an artist, and that defines to a great extent the shortcomings of many of our modems: The artist should use nature as a dictionary. This representation of natural vision as a phenomenon which, if not actually to be despised, is nevertheless to be considered as a means only, has imbued many a painter with a disrespect for the world as we see it and an exaggerated admiration for the shapes and fancies that dwell only in the artist's head. Yet if, before using nature as a springboard for in spiration, the painter would examine and analyze the nature of this accessory, he would perhaps, as other masters have before him, become so engrossed in his analysis and full of admiration for the results, that there would be no need to spring, that he could paint what he sees, and replace the sense of his own importance by a sense of awe before nature. A Short History of Mexico (Classic Reprint) by Arthur Howard Noll Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of Mexico The history of Mexico, subsequent to the conquest by the Spaniards early in the sixteenth century, is scarcely known outside of that country. General histories pass over the three centuries of Spanish rule, the long struggle for independence, the establishment of a short-lived empire followed by a nominal republic, and the rise and fall of a second empire, as subjects of but little interest, and without giving very accurate information regarding them. If any comprehensive history of Mexico exists in the English language, its name fails to appear in any of the long lists of books on Mexico which the present writer has diligently searched. This brief history was prepared with the writers own needs in view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Village Shield by Ruth Gaines Pdf

Excerpt from The Village Shield: A Story of Mexico The full-page illustrations for this book have been taken from three famous books of travel, written in each case by men of science, viz Six Months Residence and Travels in Mexico, by W. Bullock, London, 1824; Mitla, Travels in Mexico and Guatemala, by G. F. Von Temp sky, London, 1858; and Mexico, Landscapes and Popular Sketches, by C. Sartorius, Lon don, 1859. The two former authors made their own sketches; the latter had the good fortune to secure those of the no less famous artist, Moritz Rugendas. The Maiolica of Mexico (Classic Reprint) by Edwin Atlee Barber Pdf

Excerpt from The Maiolica of Mexico Although the wares here treated are more of the na ture of the stanniferous faience of Holland, France and Germany than of the maiolica of Italy, and will therefore by some authorities be considered as not entitled to classi fication with true maiolica, the term has been used here for the reason that the ware is undoubtedly an offshoot of the maiolica of Spain, which re ects the art of the Italian potters. While the enameled ware of Mexico was never lustered like the Italian and hispano-moresque, and was not coated with a wash of lead glaze to impart brilliancy, it nevertheless possesses many of the characteristics of both. The writer takes pleasure in acknowledging his indebt edness to Schor Enrique L. Ventosa, of Puebla, and to Mrs. Zelia Nuttall, of Coyoacan, for valuable assistance in his investigations in Mexico; to Mr. Albert Pepper, and M. Gaston de Ramaix, Secretary of the Belgium Legation, both of the City of Mexico, and to Dr. Wilhelm Bauer, of Tacubaya, for photographs of important examples of Mexi can maiolica in private hands; to Rev. Francis S. Borton, of Puebla, for his researches among the early publications of Mexico and the manuscript records of the city of Puebla, through which many of the facts set forth in the following pages have been obtained; and finally to Mr. Albert H. Pitkin, of Hartford, who accompanied the author to Mex ico, for invaluable advice and assistance in securing ex amples of the ware for the Museum collection. The Mexican Mural Renaissance, 1920-1925 (Classic Reprint) by Jean Charlot Pdf

Excerpt from The Mexican Mural Renaissance, 1920-1925 All this happened close to half a century ago. In writing about it now I am reminded of the sequel to The Three Musketeers, similarly separated in time, in which the once dashing friends make rheumy tries at repeating the capers of their youth. The painter grown gray need not feel as spent as did those aging roustabouts. As the muscles sag, one may still hope for a second freedom to blossom, as it did with Renoir, though his body was jackknifed in a wheelchair and the paintbrush had to be lashed to his gnarled, paralyzed fist. Bits of Old Mexico (Classic Reprint) by James A. Wilson Pdf
