Snapshots of Chinese Culture by Zhao Yin,Cai Xinzhi Pdf

Over their long and colorful history, the Chinese people have produced a variety of fascinating and useful cultural artifacts and performance inventions--from the compass and paper money to tea ceremonies and wedding parties--that have won the admiration of people around the world. They have improved living conditions for many who remain unaware of the Chinese origins of these innovations. This book's forty concise chapters serve as windows into a wide range of Chinese cultural traditions and practices. Some aspects of culture featured here include Chinese gardens, homes, and temples; calligraphy, chess, and clothing; paper cutting, seals, and musical instruments; martial arts and Peking Opera; and feng shui (auspicious design). Amply illustrated, with idiomatic phrases parsed throughout, the authors offer a road map to guide both the novice and "old hand" alike through the essential elements of Chinese culture.

Snapshots of Intellectual Life in Contemporary PR China by Arif Dirlik Pdf

"Snapshots of Intellectual Life in Contemporary PR China" discusses changes that have taken place in Chinese intellectual life over the past decade, the self-reflection that these changes have provoked among Chinese intellectuals, and the ways in which these changes have been received in the United States. Featuring essays by intellectuals from throughout Asia, this special issue of boundary 2 examines how China's changing economy creates both new problems and new opportunities. These essays explore contemporary discussions concerning education and culture as China aspires to create innovative world-class universities and new national universities. Others discuss the question of "Chineseness" as an ideological operator within China, throughout the Chinese diaspora, and increasingly across the competitive globalized economy of culture and ideas. Young Chinese in Urban China by Alex Cockain Pdf

This book examines the condition of being a young person in China and the way in which changes in various dimensions of urban life have affected Chinese youths' quests to understand themselves. The author examines social factors such as changes in the physical construction of urban neighbourhoods; changes in family life including reduced family size, increasing rates of divorce and increased physical mobility of the family unit; school life and mounting pressure to perform well in examinations and be a good student; access to foreign and domestic media as well as access to the internet. Drawing on the fields of social and cultural anthropology, Alex Cockain shows that the process of self understanding in a changing spatial, social and cultural world involves ongoing disjointed efforts to achieve a sense of security and belonging on the one hand and a degree of increased autonomy in their relationships with, for example, parents and teachers on the other. This book will appeal to anyone interested in Chinese Society, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Asian Anthropology and Youth Studies.

Zoning China by Luzhou Li Pdf

An examination of “cultural zoning” in China considers why government regulation of online video is so much more lenient than regulation of broadcast television. In Zoning China, Luzhou Li investigates why the Chinese government regulates online video relatively leniently while tightly controlling what appears on broadcast television. Li argues that television has largely been the province of the state, even as the market has dominated the development of online video. Thus online video became a space where people could question state media and the state's preferred ideological narratives about the nation, history, and society. Li connects this relatively unregulated arena to the “second channel” that opened up in the early days of economic reform—piracy in all its permutations. She compares the dual cultural sphere to China's economic zoning; the marketized domain of online video is the cultural equivalent of the Special Economic Zones, which were developed according to market principles in China's coastal cities. Li explains that although the relaxed oversight of online video may seem to represent a loosening of the party-state's grip on media, the practice of cultural zoning in fact demonstrates the the state's strategic control of the media environment. She describes how China's online video industry developed into an original, creative force of production and distribution that connected domestic private production companies, transnational corporations, and a vast network of creative labor from amateurs to professional content creators. Li notes that China has increased state management of the internet since 2014, signaling that online and offline censorship standards may be unified. Cultural zoning as a technique of cultural governance, however, will likely remain.
