Socialism and the Family by H. G. Wells Pdf

“Socialism and the Family” contains two essays written by H. G. Wells. The first paper was presented at the Fabian Society in October, 1906, and the other was first published in the “Independent Review”. Combined, they present an exacting picture of the attitude of Modern Socialism to family life. This volume is highly recommended for those with an interest in Socialism, and it is not to be missed by collectors of Wells' seminal work. Herbert George Wells (1866 – 1946) was a prolific English writer who wrote in a variety of genres, including the novel, politics, history, and social commentary. Today, he is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the science fiction genre thanks to such novels as “The Time Machine” (1895), “The Invisible Man” (1897), and “The War of the Worlds” (1898). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

The Red War on the Family (Classic Reprint) by Samuel Saloman Pdf

Excerpt from The Red War on the Family It hardly is necessary to state to observant readers that in those countries where socialism dominated the state it has not made an impressive showing, even to those of the socialist faith, as is evidenced by the many apologies offered by the latter for the lack of success met with by socialist visionaries in such countries. But their experience has not been Without value, and enables us more correctly to appraise socialism than ever before. Socialism and the Family by H. G. Wells Pdf

Excerpt from Socialism and the Family In this paper I am anxious to define and discuss the relationship between three distinct things: (1) Socialism, i.e. a large, a slowly elaborating conception of a sane and organized state and moral culture to replace our present chaotic way of living, (2) the Socialist movement, and (3) the Middle Classes. The first is to me a very great thing indeed, the form and substance of my ideal life, and all the religion I possess. Socialism and Character (Classic Reprint) by Henry Sturt Pdf

Excerpt from Socialism and Character Can anyone who is not utterly callous profess himself to be content with our present social system? If he is content, he must either be blind or live far remote from our main centres of population. Let him visit the nearest industrial city and then defend, if he can, the system which brings such places into existence. Our industrial cities produce the wealth which is necessary to modern civilization; and what sinks of misery they are! Everyone detests them, except perhaps the capitalists who grow rich there. What English family would choose to live in Sheffield or Wolverhampton, still less in that full-blown growth of competitive commercialism, the East End of London? The material evils of our system are gross and palpable, and have made us a byword of reproach throughout the world. But corresponding to them there is also a spiritual mischief, which is even more deplorable to a thoughtful mind; a low morality, which is not confined to the poor people who live in the slums but spreads corruptingly through every rank and class of the community. The Essentials of Socialism (Classic Reprint) by Ira Brown Cross Pdf

Excerpt from The Essentials of Socialism The ordinary volume on socialism is either biased in its presentation of the subject or it covers too small a portion of the field by being an historical sketch, a bit of propaganda literature, or merely a discussion of its theoretical foundation. In the following pages I have endeavored to avoid these objectionable features, in the hope that the volume may serve as a handbook to the busy reader or as a textbook for the classroom. My object has been to cover the field usually discussed and to present the subject in such a manner that the reader or instructor may be free to form and express his own opinions and to elaborate or to curtail any part of the discussion that he may desire. An effort has been made to state fairly and accurately both sides of the issues involved, and although I realize the practical impossibility of attaining this ideal, I cherish the hope that the following statement may prove satisfactory to the advocates as well as to the opponents of this widely discussed and much misunderstood subject. The Red War on the Family by Samuel Saloman Pdf

Excerpt from The Red War on the Family It should not be necessary to apologize for yet another volume on socialism. True, much has been written on both sides, and publication assuredly will continue until such time, if it ever comes, when socialism will be an assured fact or will be relegated to the limbo where peacefully rest for all time other theories of life that, too, had their outspoken defenders, other philosophies that in their day, like socialism to-day, made their appeals to the hearts and minds of men. But even before the close of the greatest war in history a material change had taken place in the world's affairs, and necessarily in the socialist philosophy. Socialism in some measure is not as it was, and transmuted into practice it has undergone radical change. Because of such change the opposition is compelled to revise its methods and its arguments and to adopt an entirely different outlook on what before had been regarded by some fearful ones as a remote threat but which since has become an immediate menace to existing institutions. A material change has taken place in some of the great countries of the world but lately participants in the Great War, and socialism, the great "doctrine of despair," as ever has thrived on the unrest resulting from defeat. How I Became a Socialist by J. Stitt Wilson Pdf

Excerpt from How I Became a Socialist: And Other Papers The pamphlets included in this volume were published at various times during the last four years, 1908-1912, while conducting Socialist propaganda in England and the United States. They were never intended as a connected whole. Some of them were delivered on special occasions, as for instance the "Bible Argument for Socialism," to the Methodist preachers of San Francisco. "How I Became a Socialist" was first printed, red hot, off my tongue, in a little paper published for campaign purposes in England. Before the last copies are exhausted, I have had three hundred sets bound for those who wish to preserve them. A new type of propaganda material will appear as the social revolution proceeds. This has had its place, and such of it as may yet prove useful may be reprinted. I count myself happy to have spoken or written anything, to have had any part however small, in this great hour of human trial and triumph. History of Socialism in the United States (Classic Reprint) by Morris Hillquit Pdf

Excerpt from History of Socialism in the United States Since the first appearance of this book (October, 1903), four editions of it have been printed without any change in the text. But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. An attempt has also been made in this edition to analyze the character of the American socialist movement and to forecast its probable future. When the "History of Socialism in the United States" was first written, socialism was only beginning to gain a foothold in this country, and the organized socialist movement was barely in its formative stage. The Socialist Party, which, to-day represents the bulk of all organized socialist activities in the United States, was only two years old. Its following was small, and its policy was somewhat unsettled. During the last six years, the party has almost doubled the number of its voters and trebled its enrolled membership. It has largely extended and perfected its organization, and has evolved more fixt and efficient methods of action. Since its organization in 1901, the Socialist Party has held three conventions and has passed through two national political campaigns. Its mission and place in the politics of the country have become more definitely settled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Socialism and Christianity I may add that the substance of these chapters was given in a series of Sunday evening discourses in my own church, while this volume was passing through the printer's hands; and the favor with which they were received leads me to hope that I shall not speak without effect to the wider audience, whose ear I now seek to gain. The Holy Family, Or Critique of Critical Critique (Classic Reprint) by Karl Marx Pdf

Excerpt from The Holy Family, or Critique of Critical Critique The Holy Family formulates some of the basic princi ples of Marxist political economy. In contrast to the Utopian Socialists Marx bases the objective inevitability of the vic tory of communism on the fact that private property in its economic motion drives itself towards its downfall. The Holy Family dates from a period when the process of the formation of Marxism was not yet completed. This is re ected in the terminology used by Marx and Engels. Marxist scientific terminology was gradually elaborated and defined by Marx and Engels as the formation and develop ment of their teaching progressed. Demos by George Gissing Pdf

Excerpt from Demos: A Story of English Socialism, Vol. 1 of 3 A large house, which stands aloof from the village and a little above it, is Wanley Manor. The county history tells us that Wanley was given in the fifteenth century to that same religious foundation, and that at the dissolution of monasteries the Manor passed into the hands of Queen Catherine. The house is half-tim bered from the height above it looks old and peaceful amid its immemorial trees. Towards the end of the eighteenth century it became the home of a family named Eldon, the estate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
