This work is a part of the extension of the soil surveys in the Sacramento Valley called for by numerous resolutions from boards of trade of all the representative cities of the valley, the Sac ramento Valley Development Association, California Water and Forest Association, etc. Which have been indorsed by Hon. George C. Perkins and Hon. F. P. Flint. I have the honor to transmit herewith the report and map covering these investigations and to recommend their publication as advance sheets of the Field Operations of the Bureau of Soils for 1907, as provided by law. Excerpt from Soil Survey of the Stockton Area, California, 1906 Sir: During the season of 1905 a soil survey was made of an area around Stockton, Cal. Requests for this work showed a variety of special interests which would be served. The following request, transmitted by the Hon. J. C. Needham and indorsed by him, sets forth the conditions in the region: The peat soils, the adobe soils, and other characteristic soils around Stockton have never been studied in a scientific manner. The great Tokay belt of California is supposed to lie just north of Stockton. The limits of this area have never been determined. Vineyardists are experimenting every year, setting out Tokays and losing their investments from lack of knowledge of soil and climatic conditions, the very conditions that a soil survey would establish. I know of no one thing that would do more to build up this part of California than a soil survey. Not only would it help our own people, but it would attract to central California ruany people because of the facts that would be established. The making of this survey was also advocated by Senator George C. Perkins, and in compliance with these requests a survey of the Stockton area was made. The work in this area should form a basis for the further extension of the survey of the soils of this region, and it would seem advisable to continue the survey to cover the greater part of the Tokay grape region. I transmit herewith the map and report on the Stockton area, California, for publication as advance sheets of the Field Operations of the Bureau of Soils for 1905, as authorized by law. Excerpt from Soil Survey of the Red Bluff Area, California, 1912 Sir: In continuation of soil-survey work in the great interior val ley of California a survey was made of the Red Bluff area during 1910. This area covers a part of Tehama and Butte Counties. This is a region of varied soils. Lide areas, underlain by hardpan, will never be of much value for agriculture. These areas will be used, as they are at present, for grazing. On the other hand, there are a number of fertile types at present used for dry farming and, to a relatively limited extent, for crops under irrigation. The develop ment of the region agriculturally depends upon the installation Of comprehensive irrigation works. Sufficient water to irrigate all Of the better soils now passes down the streams during the flood period. It would be an engineering problem of great magnitude to store these flood waters in reservoirs along the upper courses Of the rivers and to lead them thence by canals to the different parts Of the area. The question of undertaking such a. Project, or projects, is under consideration, and preliminary surveys show it to be feasible. The outlining of the soils in the area and the valuation of the different types for the many special crops hat may be grown in this region where sufficient water is obtainable should be of value as a basis for estimating the capital that may be safely invested in irrigation work.
