Solar flares are very complex electromagnetic phenomena of a cataclysmic nature. Particles are accelerated to very high velocities and a variety of physical processes happen inside and outside flares. These processes can be studied by a large number of techniques from Earth and from space. The aim is to discover the physics behind solar flares. This goal is complicated because information about the flare mechanism can be obtained only in an indirect way by studying the secondary effects. This book provides three stages in the solution of the solar flare problem. Chapter one describes the connection between observational data and theoretical concepts, where it is stressed that next to investigating flares, the related non-stationary large-scale phenomena must be studied as well. The second chapter deals with secondary physical processes, in particular the study of high-temperature plasma dynamics during impulsive heating. The last chapter presents a model built on the knowledge of the two previous chapters and it constructs a theory of non-neutral turbulent current sheets. Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances resulting from an interaction of the Solar Flare radiation with the constituents of the upper atmosphere constitute one of the three major aspects of ground level monitoring of solar flares -the other two being optical observations of flares, and the observations of solar bursts in radio wavelengths. SIDs, therefore, form a major part of flare monitoring programme in many observatories. Unlike the other two, however, the ionospheric effects of flares provide one major additional source of interest - the reaction of the ionospheric plasma to an impulsive ionization. The high atmosphere provides a low pressure laboratory without walls in which a host of reactions occur between electrons, ions and neutral particles. The resulting products and their distributions may bear no resemblance to those of the primary neutral constituents or their direct ionization products. The variations with the time of the day, with season and with solar activity that form the bulk of the ionospheric measurements are too slow to allow any insight into the nature of these ionospheric reactions whose lifetimes are often very short. The relaxation time of the ionospheric ionization is only a few minutes or fraction of a minute in the lower ionosphere and in the E-region and is about 30 min to an hour at 300 km. The flares provide a sudden short impulse comparable to these time scales.

The flare data were compiled primarily from the flare lists of the IAU Quarterly Bulletin and a magnetic tape obtained from the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences and Aeronomy (ITSA). This tape was assembled from the CRPL-F Part B series (1955 through 1964) and included sub-flare reports. Altogether, 84,600 reports were compiled. In preparing the revised tape, tests were made for errors that were introduced at various stages in the handling of the data. Some errors were detected by comparing the entries for flare time, position, and importance of the flare reports found in both the CRPL and IAU flare lists. Only slightly more than one-third of all reports were so compared, but these included practically all flares of importance> or = 1 during the period 1955 through 1962. Errors in reported flare areas were detected by matching reports between the two flare lists and by testing the areas as a function of central distance. This check uncovered flare reports in which the measured and corrected areas were reversed. Other errors were detected by checking for consistency of the information within each flare report. These various tests disclosed a 12.5 percent error in the flare reports of the CRPL-F Part B series, and an 11.2 percent error in the Quarterly Bulletin flare list. After correction of all identified errors, the revised magnetic tape listing may still contain a 5 percent error. Most of these discrepancies are in the sub-flare reports.

Estimating the Flare-production Potential of Solar Active Regions from Analysis of Real-time Magnetic Field Data by D. M. Rust Pdf

A magnetograph at the Sacramento Peak Observatory is being used on a daily basis to record the magnetic fields in solar active regions. Contour maps of the line-of-sight component of the field are available to the observers and to the flare prediction groups at NOAA and AWS within an hour after observation. The contour maps reveal many details of both weak and strong magnetic fields that are closely associated with large and small flares. Through the use of several examples, empirical rules for estimating flare likelihood are developed. Analysis of the magnetograms shows that flares are probably associated with X-type or Y-type neutral points in the magnetic fields of the solar chromosphere or lower corona. (Author).
