Introduction to Cabo Verde by Gilad James, PhD Pdf

Cabo Verde is a group of ten islands located off the western coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. The country has a total population of approximately 500,000 people and the official language is Portuguese. The islands were uninhabited until 1460, when they were discovered by Portuguese sailors. The country gained independence from Portugal in 1975 and has since become a stable democracy. The economy of Cabo Verde is heavily reliant on tourism and service industries. The country is known for its beautiful beaches and rich cultural heritage. The music of Cabo Verde, known as morna, has gained international recognition and has been popularized by musicians such as Cesaria Evora. In recent years, the country has made significant strides in social and economic development, with improvements in healthcare and education. Cabo Verde is also known for its commitment to renewable energy, with plans to generate 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025.

Cabo Verdean Women Writing Remembrance, Resistance, and Revolution by Terza A. Silva Lima-Neves,Aminah N. Pilgrim Pdf

Cabo Verdean Women Writing Remembrance, Resistance, and Revolution: Kriolas Poderozas documents the work and stories told by Cabo Verdean women to refocus the narratives about Cabo Verde on Cabo Verdean women and their experiences. The contributors examine their own experiences, the history of Cabo Verde, and Cabo Verdean diaspora to highlight the commonalities that exist among all women of African descent, such as sexual and domestic violence and media objectification, as well as the different meanings these commonalities can hold in local contexts. Through exploring the literary and musical contributions of Cabo Verdean women, the Cabo Verdean state and its transnational relations, food and cooking traditions, migration and diaspora, and the oral histories of Cabo Verde, the contributors analyze themes of community, race, sexuality, migration, gender, and tradition.

Remembering the Liberation Struggles in Cape Verde by Miguel Cardina,Inês Nascimento Rodrigues Pdf

Remembering the Liberation Struggles in Cape Verde: A Mnemohistory takes as its reference from the anti-colonial struggles against the Portuguese colonial empire in Africa in the 1960s and 1970s and the ways this period has been publicly remembered. Drawing on original and detailed empirical research, it presents novel insights into the complex entanglements between colonial pasts and political memories of anti-colonialism in shaping new nations arising out of liberation struggles. Broadening postcolonial memory studies by emphasising underdeveloped research cases, it provides the first comprehensive research into how the liberation struggle is memorialised in Cape Verde and why it changes over time. Proposing an innovative approach to thinking about this historical event as a political subject, the book argues that the "struggle" constitutes a mnemonic device mobilised while negotiating contemporaneous representations related to the Cape Verdean nation, state and society. As such, it will appeal to scholars of history, sociology, anthropology and politics with interests in memory studies and public memory, postcolonialisms and African studies. Songs about children playing in the schoolyard, sisters braiding each other's hair at the beach, and parents dancing late into the night mesh together thanks to the music. A wide array of styles--nursery rhymes from Gabon, lullabies from Cape Verde, and rumbas from the Congo--are performed in more than a dozen languages. Luminous artwork and homegrown instruments round off this wonderful celebration of history, language, and culture. Lyrics appear in their original language and in English, along with notes on culture, a world map, and a code for song downloads and print-outs.
