Cape Verde by Murray Stewart,Aisling Irwin,Colum Wilson Pdf

This new 7th edition of Bradt's Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) has been fully revised and updated and remains the most comprehensive English-language guidebook available to the islands of this alluring Atlantic archipelago, described by some as 'Africa light'. The guide includes well-researched history and cultural sections, with a particularly strong section on music, and brings an honest approach to reporting the fragile balance between tourist development and protecting the environment. This new edition reflects the many changes since the previous one, including the introduction of charter flights from the UK to Sal and the first casino-hotel on Sal, as well as providing full information on how to make the most of the less developed islands away from the main tourist hotspots. Stable and peaceful, quietly isolated by its mid-Atlantic location, Cape Verde continues to grow economically and to develop its tourist infrastructure at a leisurely pace. With few natural resources, the islands are heavily dependent on imports, foreign remittances and still to some extent on foreign aid. The reduction in the latter has heightened the focus on the importance of tourism as an economic driver and visitor numbers continue to rise. Year-round sunshine makes Cape Verde a particularly appealing destination. The archipelago is diverse, particularly in terms of its tourist infrastructure. Sal and Boavista, the oldest of these volcanic islands are flat with white-sand beaches that rival anything in the world. Consequently, they attract 95% of Cape Verde's visitors, leaving the other seven inhabited islands undeveloped. Hikers and those curious to discover something authentic are drawn to them, spending their time walking amongst the jaw-dropping mountainous landscapes of Fogo or Santo Antão, taking some true time-out in tiny Brava or mellow Maio or enjoying the cultural fusion of African, Portuguese and Brazilian influences in the cities of Praia and Mindelo. The adventurous will find adrenalin rushing as they profit from windsurfing and kitesurfing opportunities, fuelled by strong breezes and Atlantic waves, while for culture, Mindelo is the attraction with a constant backdrop of seductive music, the thread which ties together the islands scattered across the mid-Atlantic.

Street's Guide to the Cape Verde Islands by Donald M. Street Pdf

Street's Guide to the Cape Verde Islands is the first and only cruising guide for the Cape Verde Islands. Printed in 2011 it is a completely up-to-date, full-color guide that includes charts and sketches not available through any other source, as well as GPS waypoints, harbor and marina information, local knowledge and much more. Don Street has a message for all sailors planning to cross the Atlantic via the trade-wind route: "Forget about spending Christmas in the Caribbean, which forces you to cross the Atlantic in late November and early December when the trades are erratic and sometimes light to nonexistent. Instead, spend Christmas cruising and exploring the Cape Verde Islands and set off in late December or early January, after the trades have settled in, and be almost guaranteed a fast passage. They're not called the Christmas Winds for nothing! " To back up this advice, Don has written Street's Guide to the Cape Verde Islands. In it, he provides a historical and cultural commentary to add color to his down-to-earth descriptions of more than 50 potential anchorages (potential, because while a few are well known, a great many of them are rarely visited by any other than local boats). Any sailor with a sense of adventure who reads this guide will find plenty of reasons to go exploring in the Cape Verdes - enough, perhaps, to occupy the entire month of December. Cabo Verde - by Carlos Lopes Pdf

This handbook is to be used as a contribution to the tour guides on the ground. It is also a way to introduce the visitors to a paradise country with a dark pass. This handbook does not include specific information on accommodation, restaurants, transportation, and activities, which will be furnished by the tourists guide in the islands and through a search on the internet. I start this handbook with a note on the history of the archipelago and then I will concentrate on each island, its own history since the discovery and places to visit in each island. One of the first published visitor's guidebook was written by John Murray, in London, and it happened in the 1830s (1836). It was an incentive for me to write this handbook, which I hope will help anyone interested in those tropical paradise islands on the Atlantic Ocean. This handbook should be used as an introduction to a personal guide to visit and learn about places, their history and the culture of the cape verdean people, even though many pieces of the heritage are being destroyed by greedy politicians. I realize that expectations are usually high and it require responsibilities on everyone involved in this business of tour guide. Preparations are required before embarking and, this book can be your first step to a great vacation in the islands of Cabo Verde. However, the tourist (you) should keep an open mind and listen to the tour guides on the islands, during any tour through the island. This handbook could be used as a reference to help you ask for more of the tour guide. A way of contributing to your tours to see the scenes mentioned in this handbook.Hope you will find this handbook useful particularly to schedule your priority on visiting the islands.Note: it should also be known that I'm against the good deed of some tourist on giving money to the kids on the streets, as they use the money to buy drugs from the dealers that prey on homeless kids and alcoholic people of the islands.Carlos Fortes Lopes, Author

Cabo Verdeans in the United States by Terza A. Silva Lima-Neves Pdf

In the last thirty years, there has been a shift in the Cabo Verdean community in the ways it perceives itself ethnically and racially, in the creation of opportunities for socio-economic mobility, and in the pursuit of new migratory patterns within the United States to take advantage of these opportunities. Existing scholarship on the historical and contemporary experiences of Cabo Verdeans in the US has been hyper-focused on racial and ethnic identities, neglecting the space for Cabo Verdeans to share their stories, which makes this collection unique. Cabo Verdeans in the United States: Twenty-First Century Critical Perspectives edited by Terza A. Silva Lima-Neves centers Cabo Verdean stories as told by Cabo Verdeans to explore community building and challenges in the twenty-first century. The contributors examine questions of solidarity, loss of innocence, and what it means to live authentically and exist intentionally in safe spaces. They offer critical reflections on traditional cultural gender norms, and they discuss the intersections of cultural stigmas, mental and physical health, and access to care. Using interviews and personal experiences, the contributors challenge existing Cabo Verdean scholars to see the value in documenting their experiences and contributions in the United States.

Entrepreneurship and Structural Change in Dynamic Territories by Luísa Cagica Carvalho,Conceição Rego,M.Raquel Lucas,M. Isabel Sánchez-Hernández,Adriana Backx Noronha Pdf

Entrepreneurial ecosystems involve a complex synergy of factors, including social and structural changes that are frequently cumulative within territories, promoting the improvement of citizens’ quality of life and higher development levels. Further, dynamic territories are characterized by constant change, activity and progress. Each chapter in this volume examines a specific entrepreneurial ecosystem in an effort to describe why and how certain companies and organizations manage to overcome adversities and achieve strong performance, while others fail. Unlike the conventional focus, the volume examines microenterprises and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), while also discussing selected experiences and case studies from developed and developing countries alike.

Creole Societies in the Portuguese Colonial Empire by Philip J. Havik,Malyn Newitt Pdf

In 2004, a conference was held at King’s College London to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Charles Boxer. The theme of the conference was the development of the culturally mixed ‘Portuguese’ societies in Asia, Africa and America, which reflected Boxer’s own interest in the social history of Portugal’s overseas empire. Although the conference papers were published by Bristol University, this volume is long out of print and the outstanding quality of many of the contributions has made it necessary for this collection to be republished. Portuguese overseas expansion over a period of five centuries led to the formation of many mixed or creole communities which drew culturally not only on Portugal, but also on indigenous societies. This cross-cultural interaction gave rise to a creole ‘Portuguese’ identity that in many cases outlasted the formal empire itself. Reflecting upon the main tenets of Boxer’s work, this collection provides a broad geographical perspective upon areas of Portuguese presence in Guinea, Cape Verde, Angola, São Tomé, Brazil and Goa. The chapters cover a wide range of social strata, including plantation slave and maroon communities, private settler-traders and pirates, indigenous trade-diasporas, and Luso-African, Luso-Brazilian and Afro-Brazilian groups, as well as the formation of Creole elites against the background of shifting racial, gender, ethnic, linguistic and religious boundaries. As such, this collection represents an exercise in ‘subaltern’ history which shows that the informal social relations were often more important in the long term than the formal structures of empire.

Creole Language, Democracy, and the Illegible State in Cabo Verde by Abel Djassi Amado Pdf

This book argues that the state in Cabo Verde is illegible since its operations, procedures, and processes are carried out through Portuguese, a language that most of the people do not understand. Consequently, the illegible state produces grave political consequences in overall political participation and the quality of democracy.

Gendered Electoral Financing by Ragnhild L. Muriaas,Vibeke Wang,Rainbow Murray Pdf

Illustrated by in-depth empirical research from six country studies, Gendered Electoral Financing: Money, Power and Representation in Comparative Perspective is the first cross-regional examination of the nexus between money, gender and political recruitment across the world. Money is assumingly one of the greatest barriers to women in the political recruitment process. The financial disadvantage of women is expected to constitute an obstacle for women’s entry into politics everywhere and especially in developing countries where women’s socio-economic status is disproportionately low relative to men’s. This line of reasoning has caused a global upswing in both candidate- and party-directed financial schemes introduced to enhance gender balance in political office. This book develops a typology of different kinds of gendered electoral financing schemes and builds theories about its causes and consequences. By comparing how gendered electoral financing affects political recruitment processes in both established and emerging democracies, the authors identify whether and how the funding mechanisms incentivize a shift in political behavior. Gendered Electoral Financing is a timely, informative and well-written book that does an excellent job of explaining, in language accessible to students and researchers alike, the cost of elections, gender imbalance in political office and the effects of financial incentive mechanisms to increase women’s representation in politics.
