Final Special Resource Study, Environmental Assessment by United States National Park Service Pdf

Excerpt from Final Special Resource Study, Environmental Assessment: Bear River Massacre Site, Idaho The purpose of this study is to provide the United States Congress with a professional analysis of whether the nationally significant resources of the Bear River massacre site in Idaho are suitable and feasible to be added to the national park system (the site was designated a national historic landmark in and to examine viable alternatives for the protection and public use of the site. One of the responsibilities of the National Park Service is to identify nationally significant natural, cultural, and recreational resources and assist in their preservation both inside and outside the national park system. The areas managed by the National Park Service are only one part of a national inventory of special and protected areas managed by innumerable federal, state, and local agencies and the private sector. Consequently, addition to the national park system is only one of several alternatives for ensuring the preservation of significant national resources for public enjoyment and benefit. Five alternative approaches are presented in the study for consideration. The no-action alternative retains the present situation at the massacre site. No further boundary designations would be proposed other than the current national historic landmark status. No protection of the massacre field or public access to the site would be established under this alternative other than those voluntarily provided by individual private landowners. The Canadian Federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process [electronic Resource] : an Analysis of the Initial Assessment Phase by Canadian Environmental Assessment Research Council,Sandra M. C. Weston Pdf

"Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is increasingly becoming a basic tool for decision-making at the federal, provincial, and local levels of government. EIA is a form of pre-project evaluation intended to provide a basis for deciding whether, and how, to proceed with a proposed project so as to prevent or minimize environmental degradation. It assumes that incorporating environmental considerations early in the planning process of a project will better protect the environment"--Introduction, page 1.

The Integration Imperative by Michael P. Gillingham,Greg R. Halseth,Chris J. Johnson,Margot W. Parkes Pdf

The purpose of this work is to develop a better understanding and thinking about the cumulative impacts of multiple natural resource development projects. Cumulative impacts are now one of the most pressing, but complex challenges facing governments, industry, communities, and conservation and natural resource professionals. There has been technical and policy research exploring how cumulative environmental impacts can be assessed and managed. These studies, however, have failed to consider the necessary integration of community, environment and health. Informed by knowledge and experience in northern British Columbia, this book seeks to expand our understanding of the cumulative impacts of natural resource development through an integrated lens. The book offers a timely response to a growing imperative – proposing integrative response to multiple natural resource developments in a way that addresses converging environment, community and health issues. Informed by the editors’ experiences across several complementary areas of expertise, we envision this book as appealing to a wide range of researchers, educators and practitioners, with relevance to a growing audience with appetite for and interest in integrative approaches.
