Abandonment to Divine Providence by Jean Pierre de Caussade Pdf

God is to be found in the simplest of our daily activities and especially through total surrender to whatever is His will for each of us. That is the message of this 18th-century inspirational classic by Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Its encouragement to live in the present moment, accepting everyday obstacles with humility and love, has guided generations of seekers to spiritual peace and holiness. In this timeless spiritual classic, de Caussade presents the simple, profound gospel message that Jesus lived and taught: My meat is to do the will of my Father in heaven. The author states, The will of God gives to all things a supernatural and divine value for the soul submitting to it. The duties it imposes and those it contains become holy and perfect because everything it touches shares its divine character. This special volume of the famous spiritual treatise also includes the many insightful letters of Father de Caussade on the practice of self-abandonment. These numerous letters provide a great additional source of wisdom and much practical guidance for how to grow in abandonment and to deepen our union with God in our daily lives.De Caussade shows that this practice of self-abandonment to God's will is the key to attaining true peace and virtue, and that it is readily available to all people - from beginners to those well advanced in the spiritual life. He also shows how to determine what God's will is for us. He reveals that it is not extraordinary feats that God expects for our growth in holiness, but rather heroic attention to every detail in our lives and humble acceptance of our daily lot in life as coming from His hand. The rich spiritual lessons in this book have stood the test of time, offering real and practical assistance to all people because its message is simple and clear, one that the reader will find to be a rare treasure of inspiration and direction to be referred to again and again.

Abandonment to Divine Providence by Jean-Pierre de Caussade Pdf

In Abandonment to Divine Providence, Jean-Pierre de Caussade wrote that the present moment is holy and that people should abandon themselves to present, a stance that is in stark contrast to the Catholic focus on the future and life after death. For de Caussade, living in the moment meant having a complete trust and faith in God, for God's will defined and guided all things. The practical advice contained in his guidebook for the faithful was originally a series of letters written for the Nuns of the Visitation of Nancy, meant to help them navigate the confusing and difficult work of spiritual enlightenment, and comes together here in two distinct parts, one for the theoretical foundations of abandoning oneself to the present moment and one with practical advice on how to live such a life. Though a departure from the standard Christian perspective, Abandonment to Divine Providence remains a deeply spiritual work with a message that many Christians may find freeing and inspiring. The present book is an English translation of the Tenth French Edition of Fr. de Caussade's "Abandon la Providence Divine," edited, to the great benefit of many souls, by Fr. H. Ramire, S. J. It is divided into two unequal parts, the first containing a treatise on total abandonment to Divine Providence, and the second, letters of direction for persons leading a spiritual life. The "Treatise" comprises two different aspects of Abandonment to Divine Providence; one as a virtue, common and necessary to all Christians, the other as a state, proper to souls who have made a special practice of abandonment to the holy will of God. The "Letters of Direction," now for the first time translated into English, were addressed to Nuns of the Visitation at Nancy. Fr. de Caussade had been stationed in this town for some time, and when later he was called away, his letters to the Nuns carried on the powerful influence he had exercised over them. They were treasured and preserved with religious care, and thus have come down to our own days. Fr. de Ramire, S. J., collected these letters, and edited them with painstaking labour.

Abandonment to Divine Providence by de Caussade Pdf

The "Abandonment to Divine Providence" of Fr. de Caussade is as far removed from the false inactivity of theQuietists, as true Christian resignation is distinct from the fatalism of Mohammedans. It is a trusting, childlike, peaceful abandonment to the guidance of grace, and of the Holy Spirit: an unquestioning and undoubtingsubmission to the holy will of God in all things that may befall us, be they due to the action of man, or to thedirect permission of God. To Fr. de Caussade, abandonment to God, the " Ita Pater " of our Divine Lord, the " Fiat" of our Blessed Lady, is the shortest, surest, and easiest way to holiness and peace. Fr. de Caussade's work mustbe read with a certain amount of discretion, as naturally every advice he gives does not apply to all readersindiscriminately. Some of his counsels may be appropriate for beginners; others for souls of a more advanceddegree of spirituality. No one, however, can fail to recognize in his writings the sure tone of a "Master," who hasunited practical to theoretical knowledge of his subject.Every page is redolent with the unction of the Spirit of God, and readers will find in his doctrine a heavenlymanna, a food of unfailing strength for their souls. The present work has been carefully translated into readableEnglish, and more regard has been paid to the meaning than 'to the literal exactness of the sentences. Theelevated, noble style of the author has been preserved throughout. It is a real contribution to the spiritual literatureof England.I am aware that our English word "Abandonment " does not adequately render the meaning of the French word"Abandon," but we have no better expression. The translation has been undertaken solely for the purpose ofhelping souls to follow the hidden paths of the spiritual life, and to surrender themselves entirely to the guidanceof the Holy Spirit.

Abandonment to Divine Providence [Annotated] by Jean-Pierre DE CAUSSADE Pdf

God is sovereign.God is in charge of everything, including the little things. Not a hair falls from our heads without God's divine will.We must rest in God's grace, as we are totally unable to contribute to our salvation. What word pops into people's minds when they hear Christians making the above statements? Calvinist. Usually these beliefs are associated with those of the Calvinist persuasion. However, Father de Caussade was a Roman Catholic Priest who taught that God is truly sovereign, and therefore our whole lives can be lived in the knowledge that all things are working for our good. We may not understand why God does things the way he does, or how our suffering can ultimately be for our good, but we can trust our benevolent Lord, who has decreed all things, is good and just. Reading Abandonment to Divine Providence will help the reader surrender to God's will. The result? Spiritual peace in the arms of a loving God. Abandonment: Absolute Surrender to Divine Providence by Jean Pierre de Caussade Pdf

There is no truth however clear which does not become error the moment it is lessened or exaggerated; and there is no food however salutary for the soul which may not, when ill-applied, become a fatal poison. The virtue of abandonment does not escape this danger; the more holy and profitable it is in itself the more serious are the dangers we risk by misunderstanding its just limits. These dangers, unfortunately, are not mere possibilities. The seventeenth century witnessed the birth of a heresy,—that of the Quietists,—which, while claiming to teach its followers perfect abandonment to God, led them into the most terrible disorders. For a time this sect wrought its ravages in the very capital of Catholicism, and put forth such specious sophistries that the pious Fénelon himself, while abhorring the practical consequences drawn from this teaching, was for a time misled by its false appearance of perfection. To preserve Father Caussade’s readers from these dangers, we think it well to add to these writings a succinct exposition of the rules which should guide us in a matter so delicate. By the light of the principles jointly furnished us by reason and faith, we shall have no difficulty in determining the just limits which should mark our abandonment to divine Providence; and it will be easy for us afterwards to elucidate the points in our author’s doctrine which might be wrongly interpreted.
