St. John: Sea and Sky by Caroline Rogers, 1st Pdf

This hardcover book by marine ecologist Dr. Caroline S. Rogers consists of 331 pages of high-resolution color photographs of birds and marine life from around the island of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, with most of them taken within Virgin Islands National Park. It has sections on birds, fish, corals, octopuses, sea turtles and other animals, most of which also occur elsewhere in the Western Atlantic and the Caribbean. Brief essays describe the coral reefs and associated biodiversity around this small island. The book also includes a very attractive map of St. John based on a photomosaic. Each page has one or more high-resolution, glossy images with informative, non-technical captions. Including the Index, the Acknowledgments, and References brings the total number of pages to 344. The Index is a list of each page with the common and scientific names of the subjects, and the location where each picture was taken. The book complements the author's previous books: Coral Reef Stars: A Galaxy of Undersea Images, in 2009, and The Mysterious, Magical Mangroves of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, in 2011. It captures the natural beauty of St. John but also acknowledges the changes in the seascape, particularly those associated with the island's coral reefs, including the effects of the devastating hurricanes in 2017 and the recent arrival of a virulent coral disease. The book is becoming more and more of a compelling record of what has already been lost while focusing on what remains and hoping that recovery is still possible. The author believes that people will only protect what they know and understand and hopes that this book will bring pleasure and awareness to its readers, along with a greater sense of connection to the natural world which is now particularly threatened and in crisis.

Sun, Sky, Sea, and Sometimes Mud! by Joan Lavern Marshall Wilkinson,Verlyne V Forde Pdf

For Joan L. Marshall, there are powerful metaphors buried in the word “mud.” Not just the natural material that squelches under a child’s bare feet when playing at the beach, but complex memories of coming of age in her native Barbados. Sun, Sky, Sea, and Sometimes Mud is a collection of sixty-two poems that celebrate and honour the author’s Barbadian upbringing and Caribbean culture. The words are at once heavy with meaning and transcendent as they add a sensory appeal to the quotidian. Blue sky, warming sun, and a sea rich in fish are all sustenance and memory of Marshall’s unpretentious life and her enduring sense of feeling love and belonging. Like many Barbadians, Marshall’s parents immigrated to England in the 1960s to financially support their children, who were commonly cared for by their grandparents. She shares beautifully written snapshots of a life that wasn’t always carefree or uncomplicated, while providing clarity and correcting some of the inaccuracies that have been written about Caribbean life. Marshall’s prose cuts to the core in this beautiful tribute to her history and culture, from childhood songs to favourite family dishes. Sun, Sea, Sky, and Sometimes Mud is an authentic take of growing up in Barbados in the 1960s and ’70s, one that’s sure to resonate with readers.

Flags of the Night Sky by André G. Bordeleau Pdf

Many national flags display astronomical features – Sun, Moon, stars – but are they really based on existing astronomical objects? The United States flag sports 50 stars, one for each state, however none of them are linked to real stars. Further, the lunar crescent is often shaped like the Sun being eclipsed by the Moon. At times, stars are seen right next to the crescent, where the darkened disc of the moon should be! This book will present true astronomical objects and patterns highlighted on national flags and link informative capsules about these objects to the political reasons why they were chosen to adorn such an important symbol.

Bram Stoker's 'The Book of Witchcraft' is a compendium of historical and cultural analysis, meticulously amalgamating an array of perspectives on the phenomena of witchcraft, sorcery, and the supernatural. Stoker's narrative, rich in detail and steeped in the lore and legends of centuries past, charts the course of magic and necromancy across Europe and America, from the darkest rituals to the sensational witch trials. His literary style weaves historical fact with the occult, presenting a tableau of social commentary within the broader literary context of Victorian-era fascination with the gothic and the macabre. Readers are treated to both an erudite history and a collection of the most striking tales and studies on the subject, making it a singular work within the annals of supernatural literature. Bram Stoker, best known for his magnum opus 'Dracula,' demonstrates a profound interest in the darker corners of the human psyche and the societal forces that shape belief in the supernatural. This curated anthology aligns with Stoker's lifelong fascination with the liminal spaces where myth and reality intertwine. His personal exploration into the realms of fear and superstition illuminates the cultural underpinnings that prompted such fervent witch hunts and trials, offering insight into how these practices both reflected and shaped societal norms and fears of the times. 'The Book of Witchcraft' appeals to both the connoisseur of historical folklore and the lay reader eager to delve into the intricacies of occult beliefs and their real-world ramifications. Stoker's scholarly approach provides a compelling entry point for those seeking to understand the pervasive power of witchcraft narratives in shaping Western culture and history. It is recommended for history enthusiasts, fans of Stoker's gothic fictions, and anyone interested in the intricate tapestry of how supernatural beliefs are woven into the fabric of societal evolution.

P.D. James by Laurel A. Young Pdf

British National Health Service employee Phyllis Dorothy James White (1920-2014) reinvented herself at age 38 as P.D. James, crime novelist. She then became long known as England's "Queen of Crime." Sixteen of her 20 novels feature one or both of her series detectives, Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard and private eye Cordelia Gray. Stand-alone works include the dystopian The Children of Men (1992) and Death Comes to Pemberley (2011), a sequel to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. James's careful plotting has earned comparison with Golden Age British detective writers such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. Yet James's work is thoroughly modern, with realistic descriptions of police procedures and the echoes and aftereffects of crime. This literary companion includes more than 700 encyclopedic entries covering the characters, settings and themes of her published writing, along with a career chronology, chronological and alphabetical listings of her works, and an exhaustive index.
