The Eagle Has Landed by Neil Clarke Pdf

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing, the endlessly-mysterious moon is explored in this reprint short science fiction anthology from award-winning editor and anthologist Neil Clarke (Clarkesworld, The Best Science Fiction of the Year). On July 20, 1969, mankind made what had only years earlier seemed like an impossible leap forward: when Apollo 11 became the first manned mission to land on the moon, and Neil Armstrong the first person to step foot on the lunar surface. While there have only been a handful of new missions since, the fascination with our planet’s satellite continues, and generations of writers and artists have imagined the endless possibilities of lunar life. From adventures in the vast gulf of space between the earth and the moon, to journeys across the light face to the dark side, to the establishment of permanent residences on its surface, science fiction has for decades given readers bold and forward-thinking ideas about our nearest interstellar neighbor and what it might mean to humankind, both now and in our future. The Eagle Has Landed collects the best stories written in the fifty years since mankind first stepped foot on the lunar surface, serving as a shining reminder that the moon is and always has been our most visible and constant example of all the infinite possibility of the wider universe. Lost in Wonder by Colette Brooks Pdf

The splendors of science, delightfully demystified. How do we make sense of the modern world? Science is a profoundly affecting aspect of contemporary life, and yet the gulf between experts and everyone else is widening. Colette Brooks bridges the gap by playing the role of curious layperson, serving as a tour guide to some of the most important discoveries and innovations of the last five centuries. Through serious and absurd stories alike, Brooks takes readers back and forth in time, from dark, cavernous laboratories to the pristine facilities of the twenty–first century. Laugh along with Newton, peer at the moon with Galileo, work beside the Wright Brothers, ride with the astronauts of Apollo 11, watch for UFOs in the 1950s, probe the secrets of the fruit fly, visit Chernobyl, or examine suspicious packages in a Hazmat suit. With Brooks as the guide, it’s easy to become immersed in the twists, turns, and surprises of each imaginative leap forward. Through a series of “thought experiments," Brooks also poses questions and offers helpful tips that ease the readers way into this strange but provocative territory. Bringing her unique perspective to the larger cultural conversation about science, Brooks ultimately unleashes the most powerful force of all: our own wonder.

The Mirroring by Gaurav Jain Pdf

Legend has it that Stanley Kubrick hid something important in his famous film The Shining. It may sound incredible but new evidence now suggests that there is indeed a treasure trove of secret information and hidden meaning encoded into this puzzling film. It can now be proved that what Kubrick has done is made several complete, full-length “secret films” and hidden them under the surface story of America’s favourite scary movie for those who can see it. The discovery of Stanley’s secret stories solves one of the greatest mysteries of the art world that has baffled moviegoers, Kubrick fans and experts alike for over forty years now. It cleanly unlocks probably the greatest puzzle and mind-maze ever built by man and confirms The Shining as perhaps the most innovative, meticulous and dense work of art ever conceived. We can easily see the first of Kubrick’s “secret movies” by simply watching The Shining again. But this time, we will watch it rationally and solve it logically like a puzzle. It seems the scariest thing about this film is that it contains no ghosts or paranormal activity—only unexplained events that can all be explained rationally. When we can see it, The Mirroring is perhaps the ultimate psychological thriller, murder mystery and dark comedy, all hidden in plain sight in a deceptively shallow blockbuster horror movie. Just beyond the ghost story for children is a profound drama rooted in reality for thinking adults that uses cinema brilliantly to shed light on the darkest parts of human behaviour and the human brain.

The Making of The Magnificent Seven by Brian Hannan Pdf

The story behind The Magnificent Seven could have been a movie in itself. It had everything—actors’ strike, writers’ strike, Mexican government interference and a row between the screenwriters that left one removing his name from the credits, all under the lingering gloom of post–McCarthy era Hollywood. A flop on release, it later became a box office hit. This book tells the behind-the-scenes story: how Yul Brynner became the biggest independent producer in Hollywood; why John Sturges was not the first choice after Brynner surrendered the director’s chair; why Sturges quit; the truth about the Mirisch Company (producers); the details of the film’s botched release and unlikely redemption; the creation of Elmer Bernstein’s classic score; and how internecine fighting prevented the making of the television series in 1963. Myths about Steve McQueen, his feud with Brynner and the scene-stealing antics of the cast are debunked. A close examination of the various screenplay drafts and the writers’ source material—Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai—shows who wrote what. Extensive analysis of Sturges’ directorial work is provided.

Afterbirth Highway by K. D. Hessler Pdf

Steve is screwed! The mountains of central Pennsylvania surround him as he stares helplessly at the old Volare oozing oil onto the roadbed of the desolate highway. Confused and disgusted, Steve laments that this is merely another thorn in the side of this contemptuous day which began when he called it quits with his long-time girlfriend. The relief he had been experiencing only moments ago by being hours away from her have been replaced with uneasy concern because he realizes he's also hours away from his desired destination. He is stranded, but he is not alone. The black hitchhiker Steve had picked up earlier is quietly studying him. Due to Steve’s selfish and cynical punker attitude, the two didn’t hit it off from the moment they met, and this is why Calvin is having trouble deciding on whether to hang around with Steve until help arrives or to ditch him entirely and resume hitching. After all, they'd both probably be better off without one another. However, what the two strangers aren't aware of is that the events over the next few hours will impact their lives with such profundity that they won’t be able to escape the respect and bond which results between them. Only the cruel, bitter reality of the world can break those chains, and unfortunately, it eventually does.

The New Biographical Dictionary of Film by David Thomson Pdf

Thomson (independent scholar), writing of The Biographical Dictionary of Film (aka A Biographical Dictionary of the Cinema, 1975 edition), described it as "a personal, opinionated, and obsessive biographical dictionary of the cinema." Thirty-five years and several editions later, that description still holds true of this expanded work. The new dictionary summarizes salient facts about its subjects' lives and discusses their film credits in terms of the quality of the filmmakers' work. In ambition it has competitors, including Leslie Halliwell's various editions of Halliwell's Filmgoers Companion (12th ed., 1997) and Halliwell's Who's Who in the Movies, edited by John Walker (4th ed., rev. and updated, 2006), which cover films and technical terms (categories not included in Thomson's), but whose entries are neutral and exceedingly brief. Additionally, Francophile Richard Roud's edited Cinema: A Critical Dictionary: The Major Filmmakers (2 v., 1980) is as passionate a work as Thomson's, but narrower in scope, with entries written by various experts, rather than only by Roud. Finally, the multivolume magnum opus The International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers (4th ed., 2000, ed. by T. Pendergast and S. Pendergast; 2nd ed., ed. by N. Thomas, v. 1, CH, May'91; 1st ed., ed. by C. Lyon, v.1-2, CH, Jan'85, v.3, CH, Apr'87, v.4-5, CH, Jun'88) covers everything--films, directors, actors, writers, and production artists--with generous, measured, scholarly entries and lavish illustrations. However, it looms large and heavy, unlike the handy one-volume work by Thomson. Arguably, Thomson's work, for its scope, is the most fun, the most convenient, and the most engaging title. All libraries supporting people interested in film should buy it. It will get lots of use and provide very good value for the money. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
