Steamboat Navigation on the Missouri River (Abridged, Annotated) by Hiram Martin Chittenden Pdf

No less authority than Hiram Chittenden wrote this marvelous history of the early days of one of America's most important waterways. A West Point engineer, namesake of the Hiram Chittenden locks in Seattle, Chittenden was a respected historian of early western America. There was no railroad system in the United States whose importance to its tributary country was relatively greater than was that of the Missouri River to the trans-Mississippi territory in the first seventy-five years of the nineteenth century. Through the earliest days of navigation on the great Missouri, through its use in the Civil War, the Indian Wars, Custer's Last Stand, and its eventual demise as a major highway due to the development of the railroads, this history tells of an America that depended on rivers for expansion. Though Grant Marsh captained the steamer Far West, which took the wounded Little Bighorn survivors to Ft. Lincoln, La Barge also saw service as a captain on Custer's Yellowstone Expedition. The life of Joseph La Barge exemplifies the 19th century life of the river. The author met La Barge shortly before his death and found him to be an extraordinary wealth of information about early steamboat travel, as La Barge had owned and operated boats on the river for many years. He was on the first boat that went to the far upper river, and he made the last through voyage from St. Louis to Fort Benton. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Steamboat Disasters on the Western Waters (Abridged, Annotated) by James T. Lloyd Pdf

According to James Lloyd, the 1856 publisher of this guide, "The price of this volume is so small, that every man, woman and child, should have a copy for reference..." However true that may have been, they might not have wanted to refer to it while ACTUALLY RIDING ON A STEAMBOAT. The largest portion of the book is taken up with detailed accounts of horrific steamboat accidents involving boiler explosions, collisions with other ships, capsizing, and damage from river detritus. In one instance he records a conflagration that consumed twenty-three steamboats in New Orleans in 1849. It reads extremely well and a modern equivalent might be 1955 classic, "A Night to Remember" about Titanic, only with scores of wrecks instead of one. In some of the cases, criminal charges were brought against crew members for negligence or because they blew up a boiler while racing another steamboat while carrying 300 passengers. It makes fascinating reading of an era long gone and Lloyd did a very creditable job of cataloging scores of accidents. Why he felt this would be appropriate reading for children while traveling is something we can never know. History of Early Steamboat Navigation on the Missouri River by Hiram Martin Chittenden Pdf

IN a great many ways the War of the Rebellion affected the commerce of the Missouri River. Missouri was a slave State, and most of her citizens along the river were Southern sympathizers. It is stated that all the Missouri River pilots except two were in sympathy with the South, and that General Lyon had to go to the Illinois River for pilots when he wanted to move his troops up the river in June, 1861.
