Stones Corner: Darkness V2 by Jane Buckley Pdf

From Turmoil to Darkness, an unapologetic account of the darkest years of 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland. Darkness follows the next instalment from author Jane Buckley's Stones Corner, Turmoil. Relive the harrowing and very troubled years of the early '70s, considered the darkest years of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Following the catastrophic fall-out from the doomed Derry City Hotel meeting, the impact of the disaster has far-reaching consequences for communities already divided and distrustful of each other. Following the lives of so many, from the wealthy, vibrant James Henderson to the love-struck factory girl Caitlin McLaughlin and her family, you cannot help but be drawn in and empathise with the civilians caught up in a raging unrelentless war they want no part in. All the while, the guerrilla war in the province gains momentum as it extends to mainland Britain and the Irish Republic. Darkness takes us from the dank hellhole of the overpopulated Victorian Armagh Women's Gaol to London's lavish, opulent private clubs. An unmerciful and harrowing tale, it endeavours to illustrate what life was like for Ulster's war-torn, sectarian communities. It captures a story of conflict, survival of the fittest, and victims who attempt to live and love against a background of chaos and carnage. Hope is lost and forgotten until the power of love, truth, and justice steps in to create Light and a new beginning.

Stones Corner: Turmoil V1 by Jane Buckley Pdf

STONES CORNER, Turmoil V1 Stones Corner, Turmoil V1 is an intense, gripping thriller with numerous twists and plots. It describes the realities and truth of life in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, in the early 1970s, the onset of what became known as "The Troubles." Turmoil recaps the cruelty, violence, heartache, poverty and desire of ordinary men and women attempting to survive in a world of sectarianism, discrimination, and militancy. The narrative follows the lives of an innocent Catholic girl from the wrong side of the tracks, a young, inexperienced British Soldier who finds himself hated and despised by the locals, to a charming but gullible Scot doing his utmost to save his uncle's shirt factory from closing by a bigoted antagonist. Their stories combine to form a cliffhanging ending to introduce Stones Corner, Darkness V2. Warning: Turmoil contains violence and strong language that some readers may find upsetting. 18+

Mule Killers by Lydia Peelle Pdf

"Lydia Peelle has given us a collection of stories so artfully constructed and deeply imagined they read like classics. It marks the beginning of what will surely be a long and beautiful career." —Ann Patchett In Reasons for and Advantages of Breathing, Lydia Peelle brings together eight brilliant stories—two of which won Pushcart Prizes and one of which won an O. Henry Prize—that peer straight into the human heart. In startling and original prose, she examines lives derailed by the loss of a vital connection to the land and to the natural world of which they are a part. Reasons for and Advantages of Breathing conveys an almost Faulknerian ache for the pre-modern South, for a landscape and a way of life lost to the ravages of money and technology.

The Anglo-Saxon Church of All Saints, Brixworth, Northamptonshire by David Parsons,Diana Sutherland Pdf

All Saints’ Church, Brixworth lies 7 miles north of Northampton. The core of the church is Anglo-Saxon and the research published here provides an unprecedented account of one of the most important buildings of its period surviving in England. The building of the main body of the church was towards the end of the 8th century, with a western tower, stair turret and polygonal apse added before the end of the 9th. Major modifications were made during the early and later medieval periods. From the early 19th century the church attracted much antiquarian interest, especially by topographical draughtsmen, whose drawings are crucial to its understanding before major restoration. Reverend Charles Frederick Watkins (Vicar, 1832–1871) made a particular study of the church fabric and identified both surviving and demolished Anglo-Saxon structures. Restoration under his direction reversed most of the medieval changes he recognised within the standing fabric, leaving the church with much the same appearance as it has today. The Brixworth Archaeological Research Committee, founded in 1972, embarked on an in-depth archaeological and historical study of All Saints’. Limited excavation revealed evidence for the former extent of the cemetery and examined remains of the early structures to the north of the church, including one whose foundations cut a ditch containing 8th-century material. The later 8th-century date for the foundation of the church was confirmed by radiocarbon dates from charcoal extracted from construction mortar in the church fabric. A complete stone-by-stone survey of the standing fabric, accompanied by petrological identifications, has led to a refined appraisal of the construction sequence and the identification of ‘exotic’ stone types and Roman bricks reused from earlier buildings up to 40 km distant. The archaeological, geological and laboratory findings presented here have been amplified by contextual studies placing the church against its archaeological, architectural, liturgical and historical background, with detailed comparisons with standing and excavated buildings of similar age in north Europe and Italy.
