Old Fashioned Stories and Poems (Classic Reprint) by Eva March Tappan Pdf

Excerpt from Old Fashioned Stories and Poems How all children chastised should be; And therefore, children, look that ye do well, And no hard beating shall ye befall. Such volumes as these may have been exceedingly instructive, but I doubt whether any child was ever so fond Of them as to carry them Off to some distant garret, so he could read and read and read Without fear Of being interrupted. Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, The Pilgrim's Progress. And Goody two-shoes had been Written; but save for these and a very few others, a child might have followed along the shelves Of many a library and found hardly a volume that would make him feel as if he could not help reading it. Soon, a colorful parade of quirky, squeaky little monsters compete to become Ethan's monster. Was the Cat in the Hat Black? by Philip Nel Pdf

Racism is resilient, duplicitous, and endlessly adaptable, so it is no surprise that America is again in a period of civil rights activism. A significant reason racism endures is because it is structural: it's embedded in culture and in institutions. One of the places that racism hides-and thus perhaps the best place to oppose it-is books for young people. Was the Cat in the Hat Black? presents five serious critiques of the history and current state of children's literature tempestuous relationship with both implicit and explicit forms of racism. The book fearlessly examines topics both vivid-such as The Cat in the Hat's roots in blackface minstrelsy-and more opaque, like how the children's book industry can perpetuate structural racism via whitewashed covers even while making efforts to increase diversity. Rooted in research yet written with a lively, crackling touch, Nel delves into years of literary criticism and recent sociological data in order to show a better way forward. Though much of what is proposed here could be endlessly argued, the knowledge that what we learn in childhood imparts both subtle and explicit lessons about whose lives matter is not debatable. The text concludes with a short and stark proposal of actions everyone-reader, author, publisher, scholar, citizen- can take to fight the biases and prejudices that infect children's literature. While Was the Cat in the Hat Black? does not assume it has all the answers to such a deeply systemic problem, its audacity should stimulate discussion and activism.

A Primary Reader by Emma Louise Smythe Pdf

Excerpt from A Primary Reader: Old-Time Stories, Fairy Tales and Myths, Retold by Children This book originated in a series of little reading lessons pre pared for the first grade pupils in the Santa Rosa public schools. The object of the lessons was three-fold: to provide reading matter for the little ones who had only a small vocabulary of sight words; to acquaint them early with the heroes who have come down to us in song and story; and to create a desire for literature. It has been my endeavor to follow Dr. G. Stanley Hall's suggestions in his monograph, How to Teach Reading, where he asks for true child-editions, made by testing many children with the work piece-meal and cutting and adapting the material till it really and closely fitted the minds and hearts of the children. Various stories were given to the pupils; discussions followed. After a time the story was produced orally by the children. Notes were made on expressions used and points of interest dwelt upon. Later the story was either written on the black board or mimeographed and put into the pupils' hands to read. It gave great delight to the children to recognize an old friend in a new dress, and as interest was aroused, but little difficulty was encountered in recognizing words that were indeed new in their sight vocabulary, but old servants in their oral vocabulary. The spirit of the book may be illustrated by referring to the roast turkey in the story of The Little Match Girl. The story was told as dear old Hans Christian Andersen gave it to the little German children of fifty years ago. But American children have a different idea of the fowl which graces the table at Christmas time. The story as it came from the lips of the chil dren referred to the turkey, and goose was used in only one instance. As the story was to appeal to our children, the word was changed to suit their ideas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Best Stories to Tell to Children (Classic Reprint) by Sara Cone Bryant Pdf

Excerpt from Best Stories to Tell to Children It is the belief of the publishers, here and in England, that some of the stories ought to be printed separately from these books on method, for the more ready ac cess of children themselves and those whose interest is of a wholly untechnical sort. This is the more de sirable because stories which are especially adapted to be told are equally charming for reading aloud or to one's self. The converse is not true: stories written to be read are rarely suitable for the story-teller's art until they have been skilfully adapted. In other words, those tales which can be and have been told with suc cess are in a sense the chosen few; they, of all the world's stories, are most charming to hear or to read. Old-Time Stories (Classic Reprint) by Charles Perrault Pdf

Excerpt from Old-Time Stories F the eleven tales which the present volume com prises, the first eight are from the master - hand of Charles Perrault. Charles Perrault (1628-1703) enjoyed much distinction in his day, and is familiar to students of French literature for the prominent part that he played in the famous Quarrel of the Ancients and Modems, which so keenly occupied French men of letters in the latter part of the seventeenth century. But his fame to-day rests upon his authorship of the traditional Tales of Mother Goose or Stories of Olden Times, and so long as there are children to listen spellbound to the adventures of Cinder ella, Red Riding Hood, and that arch rogue Puss in Boots, his memory will endure.
