Strained Relations by T. Ryle Dwyer Pdf

Strained Relations is a substantial account of Irish-USA relations during the Second World War. Much of the material is based on previously classified documents, and on personal interviews with the Americans sent to Ireland as spies. The author explores the suspicion and occasional hostility with which the USA and Great Britain viewed this neutral but strategically important country. He discusses the contingency plans for the seizure of Irish ports, the attempt to discredit de Valera, as well as the novel forms of intelligence work engaged in by American diplomats. Contents: Preface; Neutrals at Odds; America Goes to War; Gray Advised by Ghosts; Just in Case; Getting Behind the Green Curtain; The Absent Treatment; American Spies in Ireland; Convenient Fiction for Allied Airmen; Ireland's Phoney Neutrality; The Irish Threat to Postwar Stability; Military did not want Irish Bases; The Truth Behind the American Note; Diplomatic Manoeuvrings; Amid the Press Hysteria; What they Knew; Towards a Troubled End; In the Final Days; Notes; Bibliography; Index D

Strained Relations by Michael D. Bordo,Owen F. Humpage,Anna J. Schwartz Pdf

During the twentieth century, foreign-exchange intervention was sometimes used in an attempt to solve the fundamental trilemma of international finance, which holds that countries cannot simultaneously pursue independent monetary policies, stabilize their exchange rates, and benefit from free cross-border financial flows. Drawing on a trove of previously confidential data, Strained Relations reveals the evolution of US policy regarding currency market intervention, and its interaction with monetary policy. The authors consider how foreign-exchange intervention was affected by changing economic and institutional circumstances—most notably the abandonment of the international gold standard—and how political and bureaucratic factors affected this aspect of public policy.

Strained Relations by Joseph Wearing Pdf

Many Canadians, including political critics and commentators, assume that Canadian political parties ought to behave like parties in the U.S. or Britain. In Strained Relations, Professor Joseph Wearing puts our parties into a broader, comparative perspective and demonstrates convincingly howthey resemble parties of other Western nations, but also exhibit unique features. He examines the ideological and historical roots of Canadian politics, explains why we vote the way we do, presents the seamy side of our political life, reveals the internal operations of caucus, and shows how partyconventions work. Our system is now hugely influenced by the presence of the media. Today, elections are no longer simple contests to win voters through the logic of policy proposals. The game of politics is now a highly sophisticated and expensive contest between the parties and the media to seewho controls who. It is, as well, a wild scramble of pollsters and imagemakers seeking to determine the public's mood and then to mould and position their candidates to fit those perceptions.

Strategic Triangles Reshaping International Relations in East Asia by Gilbert Rozman Pdf

Rozman shows how East Asia’s international relations over three decades can be best understood through the lens of triangles, analyzing relations between the key nations through a series of trilateral relationships. He argues that triangles present a convincing answer to the question of whether we had entered a new era of bipolarity like the Cold War or an age of multipolarity. Triangulation emerged as a dynamic in East Asia in the aftermath of the Cold War and was accelerated in the course of the Xi and Trump administrations. Even as Sino-US competition and confrontation deepened, triangles had a substantial presence. East Asian triangles share an unusual mixture of three distinct elements: deep-seated security distrust, extraordinary economic interdependence, and a combustible composition of historical resentments and civilizational confidence. The combination of the three makes the case for triangularity more compelling, Rozman argues. The legacy of communism, the pursuit of reunification on the Korean Peninsula, and moves to expand beyond the US-Japan alliance have all driven the way triangles have evolved. Only as bipolarity intensified in the 2020s was triangularity losing ground. The degree of turnabout is analyzed for all of the cases considered. Rozman evaluates each key triangle of states in turn and assesses how the relationship impacts the region more widely. This book provides an essential framework for understanding the current state and trajectory of East Asian international relations, for students and policymakers. Strained Relations by Rodney Allen Fletcher Pdf

Having failed at his relationship with Jared Gruesbeck, and unsure whether or not he should give his ex-lover, Nolan Moran, a second chance, Nicholas Beems feels like his entire life is falling apart before his very eyes. Loving two men in totally different ways could not make life any more complicated for Nicholas Beems. Trying to rebuild what he and Nolan shared in the past proves to be more difficult than Nicholas ever imagined. Nicholas doesn't know if his heart can ever forgive Nolan for the ultimate betrayal he has put them through, and as time passes, Nicholas learns that sometimes what the heart wants, the mind isn't always able to overlook. Strained Relations is the second book in the Closer Than You Think series. It picks up precisely where it's predecessor Caught Between Then and Now leaves off, following the lives of Nicholas, Tom, Jake, Jared, Gage and Nolan along with other familiar characters and some new ones as well. Strained Relations is the continuing story of how difficult it can be sometimes to just find peace of mind in ones life when your relationships, friendships and family connections seem to be strained to the point of complete failure. RODNEY ALLEN FLETCHER was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He spent his life there until a move to Colorado in the summer of 2008. He currently resides in Denver, Colorado. He enjoys the outdoors, biking, reading, spending time with friends, visiting family on return trips to the Midwest and of course...writing. Strained Relations is Rodney's second novel and the second novel of the Closer Than You Think series.

After the Cold War: Domestic Factors and U.S.-China Relations by R.J. Ross Pdf

As relations between the United States and China move into a period of intense activity and sensitivity, this timely book addresses the impact of domestic factors in both countries on their post-Cold War/post-Tiananmen relations. The contributors examine the issue from a number of distinct perspectives: the increased impact of domestic factors in both countries due to changing strategic circumstances; the politics of China policy in the United States, with emphasis on the role of interest groups vis-a-vis Congress, the media, and other domestic institutions; the importance of domestic factors in U.S.-China economic conflicts; the combined impact of domestic factors in both China and the United States on the most important conflict of interest in U.S.-China relations -- the Taiwan issue.

International Relations in Latin America by Andrea Oelsner Pdf

This work studies the development of bilateral relations in two pairs of states (dyads): Argentina-Brazil and Argentina-Chile. It takes on a moderate constructivist approach that incorporates into the analysis of international relations the role of identities, ideas and perceptions as well as of material forces, and understands that the former are affected and changed during interaction. It also uses to securitization theory to explain how issues come or cease to be considered security matters through social constructions.

A Strained Partnership? by Thomas Robb Pdf

This is the first monograph-length study that charts the coercive diplomacy of the administrations of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford as practised against their British ally in order to persuade Edward Heath's government to follow a more amenable course throughout the 'Year of Europe' and to convince Harold Wilson's governments to lessen the severity of proposed defence cuts. Such diplomacy proved effective against Heath but rather less so against Wilson. It is argued that relations between the two sides were often strained, indeed, to the extent that the most 'special' elements of the relationship, that of intelligence and nuclear co-operation, were suspended. Yet, the relationship also witnessed considerable co-operation. This book offers new perspectives on US and UK policy towards British membership of the European Economic Community; demonstrates how US détente policies created strain in the 'special relationship'; reveals the temporary shutdown of US-UK intelligence and nuclear co-operation; provides new insights in US-UK defence co-operation, and re-evaluates the US-UK relationship throughout the IMF Crisis.
