The Years They Raised Chicago by Cullen Gwin Pdf

Chicago, Illinois sits at the southernmost end of Lake Michigan. In the early days of the United States, it was a great place to build a city. The lake supplied the fresh water they needed to live. Trees were everywhere, providing wood for buildings. The lake supplied the settlers with numerous kinds of fish, including trout, sturgeon, carp, and catfish. There was good farm land nearby for growing crops. The lake even provided a means to ship the grain they raised to the east. Everything seemed perfect. Unfortunately it was too perfect. People flocked to Chicago by the boatload, and many more came overland. In 1840 the population was 4,470. Twenty years later it had grown to 112,172! But the homes did not have plumbing. People would use a chamber pot to go to the bathroom in. The pot would then be dumped out into the street. There it would mix with the horse manure from the thousands of horses that walked the streets every day. Something had to be done! Find out how they solved the problem by raising an entire city in this fun 15-minute book. Ages 8 and up. With Her Fist Raised by Laura L. Lovett Pdf

The first biography of Dorothy Pitman Hughes, a trailblazing Black feminist activist whose work made children, race, and welfare rights central to the women’s movement. Dorothy Pitman Hughes was a transformative community organizer in New York City in the 1970s who shared the stage with Gloria Steinem for 5 years, captivating audiences around the country. After leaving rural Georgia in the 1950s, she moved to New York, determined to fight for civil rights and equality. Historian Laura L. Lovett traces Hughes’s journey as she became a powerhouse activist, responding to the needs of her community and building a platform for its empowerment. She created lasting change by revitalizing her West Side neighborhood, which was subjected to racial discrimination, with nonexistent childcare and substandard housing, where poverty, drug use, a lack of job training, and the effects of the Vietnam War were evident. Hughes created a high-quality childcare center that also offered job training, adult education classes, a Youth Action corps, housing assistance, and food resources. Hughes’s realization that her neighborhood could be revitalized by actively engaging and including the community was prescient and is startlingly relevant. As her stature grew to a national level, Hughes spent several years traversing the country with Steinem and educating people about feminism, childcare, and race. She moved to Harlem in the 1970s to counter gentrification and bought the franchise to the Miss Greater New York City pageant to demonstrate that Black was beautiful. She also opened an office supply store and became a powerful voice for Black women entrepreneurs and Black-owned businesses. Throughout every phase of her life, Hughes understood the transformative power of activism for Black communities. With expert research, which includes Hughes’s own accounts of her life, With Her Fist Raised is the necessary biography of a pivotal figure in women’s history and Black feminism whose story will finally be told.

Mingo Dabney by James H. Street Pdf

In this fifth and final novel of the Dabney family saga, the reader is introduced to the last of the gallant Dabney clan. Passionate and restless, Mingo Dabney falls in love with Rafaela Galban, a beautiful Cuban girl who was to her people what Joan of Arc had been to the French. But as Mingo rode his white horse from Lebanon on a frosty night in 1895 to follow Rafaela to Cuba, it was the woman herself he sought to win. Little did he dream that he would never see his home again, or that his quest for Rafaela was about to plummet him into the midst of flaming revolt on Spain's fortress-island in the Caribbean. As the lines of Mingo Dabney's destiny crossed Rafaela's, they also ran counter to colorful and unforgettable figures from Cuban history ― General Máximo Gómez, the "Old Fox", who armed a handful of peasants with machetes, and the incredible Antonio Macéo, whose mixed blood shaped him into a strange and formidable leader, a half consecrated fighter for liberty, a half debauchee and rake. In the pages of this robust and swaggering tale, you will walk arm in arm with Mingo Dabney and Antonio Macéo as they recruit their army of insurrectos under the eyes of the Havana police. You will follow the rebels through the vermin-infested jungle as they fight their running battles with Sagaldo's army of a quarter of a million men. You will thrill to the beat of native drums sounding the battle cry of the revolutionists ― "Venga Mambi! Come on you dirt, and die!" You will see drunken and disorderly scavengers, discarded men without shoes or guns or horses, transformed into heroes, ready to follow El Dabney ― the El Dabney of a hundred miracles, the tree cutter, the fire maker, the healer ― and ready to die for Cuba. You will live on an island aflame, and as Mingo Dabney moves to a thunderous climax in 1896, you will know that you have watched history being made.

Raised by the Church by Edward Rohs,Judith Estrine Pdf

In 1946 Edward Rohs was left by his unwed parents at the Angel Guardian Home to be raised by the Sisters of Mercy. The Sisters hoped that the parents would one day return for him. In time they married and had other children, but Ed's parents never came back for him. And they never signed the legal papers so he could be adopted by another family. Rohs was one of thousands of children taken in by Catholic institutions during the tumultuous post-WWII years. With original research based on interviews with clergymen and nuns, archival data from the New York Archdiocese, and government records, this book tells the social history of an era when hundreds of thousands of baby boomers passed through the orphanage system. Through the story of one man, this book gives us a much-needed historical perspective on an American society that understood and acknowledged the community's need for a safe haven.
