Structural Analysis, Design and Control by the Virtual Distortion Method by Jan Holnicki-Szulc,Jacek T. Gierlinski Pdf

This book presents the general concept of the Virtual Distortion Method with the necessary theoretical background and a number of its applications to problems of structural analysis and design. The approach presented allows for the development of efficient computational methods for the numerical analysis of problems where, e.g., local failures, the temperature field or permanent plastic deformations are described by virtual distortions. On the other hand, properly modelled (fictitious) virtual distortions can be used to simulate structural modifications such as material redistribution applicable in the optimal redesign process. Finally, virtual distortions can be used to mimic the behaviour of actuators in active structural control problems: shape, stress or vibration control. A number of numerical algorithms are developed, enabling one to solve various problems of structural analysis, design and control.

Virtual Distortion Method by Jan Holnicki-Szulc Pdf

The theory of virtual distortions provides an efficient tool which can be used to treat many problems that differ from the physical point of view. The objective of this book is to present a general concept of the Virtual Distortion Method with the necessary theoretical background and a variety of its applications to problems of structural analysis and design. The book is focussed more on theoretical aspects of the problems than on the practical design of structurÄB. Nevertheless, a number of numerical algorithms discussed in the book has already been developed as a computational system capable to solve various problems of structural analysis.

Reanalysis of Structures by Uri Kirsch Pdf

This book deals with various computational procedures for multiple repeated analyses (reanalysis) of structures, and presents them in a unified approach. It meets the need for a general text covering the basic concepts and methods as well as recent developments in this area. To clarify the presentation, many illustrative examples and numerical results are demonstrated. Previous books on structural analysis do not cover most of the material presented here.

Smart Technologies for Safety Engineering by Jan Holnicki-Szulc Pdf

Smart technologies comprise a dynamic new interdisciplinary research field that encompasses a wide spectrum of engineering applications including, but not limited to, intelligent structures and materials, actuators, sensors and structural observability, control systems and software tools for the design of adaptive structures. Smart technologies focus on the issues surrounding the safety and integrity of engineering systems. Smart Technologies for Safety Engineering presents the achievements of ten years of research from the Smart-Tech Centre applied to some of the key issues of safety engineering. Results presented include: Original methods and software tools for modelling, design, simulation and control of adaptive structures and applicability of the adaptive concept to the design of structures for extreme loads; Application of the smart-tech concept to hot research topics and emerging engineering issues including health monitoring of structures and engineering systems, monitoring of loading conditions, automatic structural adaptation to unpredictable, randomly changing dynamic conditions and the optimal design of adaptive structures and engineering systems; Numerically efficient and original software packages that can be used for the design of adaptive, as well as passive (without control devices) structures. The Virtual Distortion Method, which has been developed especially for fast reanalysis of structures and systems and exact sensitivity analysis, allowing for effective modelling, design, health monitoring and control of smart engineering systems. The original research and practical applications in Smart Technologies for Safety Engineering will appeal to a broad spectrum of engineers, researchers, professors and graduate students involved in the research, design and development of widely understood adaptronics and mechatronics, including smart structures and materials, adaptive impact absorption, health and load monitoring, vibration control, vibroacoustics and related issues.

Plates, Laminates and Shells by T Lewinski,J J Telega Pdf

This book gives a systematic and comprehensive presentation of the results concerning effective behavior of elastic and plastic plates with periodic or quasiperiodic structure. One of the chapters covers the hitherto available results concerning the averaging problems in the linear and nonlinear shell models. A unified approach to the problems studied is based on modern variational and asymptotic methods, including the methods of variational inequalities as well as homogenization techniques. Duality arguments are also exploited. A significant part of the book deals with problems important for engineering practice, such as: statical analysis of highly nonhomogeneous plates and shells for which common discretization techniques fail to be efficient, assessing stiffness reduction of cracked [00n/900m]s laminates, and assessing ultimate loads for perfectly plastic plates and shells composed of repeated segments. When possible, the homogenization formulas are cast in closed form expressions. The formulas presented in this manner are then used in constructing regularized formulations of the fundamental optimization problems for plates and shells, since the regularization concepts are based on introducing the composite regions for which microstructural properties play the role of new design variables. Quasidifferentiability and Nonsmooth Modelling in Mechanics, Engineering and Economics by Vladimir F. Demyanov,Georgios E. Stavroulakis,L.N. Polyakova,P. D. Panagiotopoulos Pdf

Nonsmooth energy functions govern phenomena which occur frequently in nature and in all areas of life. They constitute a fascinating subject in mathematics and permit the rational understanding of yet unsolved or partially solved questions in mechanics, engineering and economics. This is the first book to provide a complete and rigorous presentation of the quasidifferentiability approach to nonconvex, possibly nonsmooth, energy functions, of the derivation and study of the corresponding variational expressions in mechanics, engineering and economics, and of their numerical treatment. The new variational formulations derived are illustrated by many interesting numerical problems. The techniques presented will permit the reader to check any solution obtained by other heuristic techniques for nonconvex, nonsmooth energy problems. A civil, mechanical or aeronautical engineer can find in the book the only existing mathematically sound technique for the formulation and study of nonconvex, nonsmooth energy problems. Audience: The book will be of interest to pure and applied mathematicians, physicists, researchers in mechanics, civil, mechanical and aeronautical engineers, structural analysts and software developers. It is also suitable for graduate courses in nonlinear mechanics, nonsmooth analysis, applied optimization, control, calculus of variations and computational mechanics.

Dynamics of Advanced Materials and Smart Structures by Kazumi Watanabe,Franz Ziegler Pdf

Two key words for mechanical engineering in the future are Micro and Intelligence. It is weIl known that the leadership in the intelligence technology is a marter of vital importance for the future status of industrial society, and thus national research projects for intelligent materials, structures and machines have started not only in advanced countries, but also in developing countries. Materials and structures which have self-sensing, diagnosis and actuating systems, are called intelligent or smart, and are of growing research interest in the world. In this situation, the IUT AM symposium on Dynamics 0/ Advanced Materials and Smart Structures was a timely one. Smart materials and structures are those equipped with sensors and actuators to achieve their designed performance in achanging environment. They have complex structural properties and mechanical responses. Many engineering problems, such as interface and edge phenomena, mechanical and electro-magnetic interaction/coupling and sensing, actuating and control techniques, arise in the development ofintelligent structures. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature ofthese problems, all ofthe classical sciences and technologies, such as applied mathematics, material science, solid and fluid mechanics, control techniques and others must be assembled and used to solve them. IUTAM weIl understands the importance ofthis emerging technology. An IUTAM symposium on Smart Structures and Structronic Systems (Chaired by U.
