Specimens of English Prose Style by George Saintsbury Pdf

Excerpt from Specimens of English Prose Style: From Malory to Macaulay A Year or more ago it was reported, perhaps falsely, that a great French writer, whose command of his own tongue was only equalled by his ignorance of the English language and literature, gave in some semi-public form his opinion of the difference between French and English prose and verse. A perfect language, he opined, should show a noteworthy difference between its style in prose and its style in verse: this difference existed in French and did not exist in English. I shall give no opinion as to the truth of this axiom in general, or as to its application to French. But it is not inappropriate to begin an essay on the subject of English prose style by observing that, whatever may be its merits and defects, it is entirely different - different by the extent of the whole heaven of language - from I English verse style. We have had writers, including some of genius, who have striven to make prose like verse: and we have had other writers, including some of genius, who have striven to make verse like prose. Both in so doing have shown themselves to be radically mistaken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Greek Prose Composition (Classic Reprint) by Henry Carr Pearson Pdf

Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. John Wilson's Prose Style by Fannie Williams McLean Pdf

Excerpt from John Wilson's Prose Style: An Undergraduate Thesis Whole as the marble, founded as the rock, As broad and general as the casing air. The Germans make university education national, if not cosmopolitan, by encouraging an interchange of intellectual products, producers, and recipients; that is, of learned works, professors, and students. They invoke the aid of a generous rivalry to promote this interchange. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Development of English Prose Style by C. R. L. Fletcher Pdf

Excerpt from The Development of English Prose Style: The Chancellor's Essay, 1881 Poetry for the most part is the result of spasmodic outbursts, consequent upon fits of national self-consciousness, such as are caused by a sudden opening up of new foreign relations, or by successful wars: fits like these are intermittent; when the pulse of the nation has ceased to beat P5313? pp5d t with feverish activity poetry will probably be comparatively neglected; whereas prose being the vehicle of all natural thought will, among a people which is making steady progress towards self-education, maintain a more even course of development. No doubt in a minor degree the prose literature of a country will always reflect passing phases of national character, and it would be unsafe to lay down any very formal generalization on the point; but the distinction just given seems to be the usual one between metrical and unmetrical composition, viewed as factors in history. A Manual of English Prose Literature by William Minto Pdf

Excerpt from A Manual of English Prose Literature: Biographical and Critical, Designed Mainly to Show Characteristics of Style Little need be said to justify taking up Prose by itself. In criticising Poetry we are met by very different con siderations from those that occur in the other kinds of composition. What is more, many people not particularly interested in Poetry are anxious for practical purposes to have a good knowledge of Prose style; and when Prose and Poetry are discussed in the same volume, Prose is generally sacrificed to Poetry.
