Albuquerque Beer: Duke City History on Tap by Chris Jackson Pdf

Albuquerque's commercial brewing scene dates back to 1888, when the Southwestern Brewery & Ice Company was launched. It later churned out thirty thousand barrels of beer per year and distributed throughout the region. Nearly thirty years later, Prohibition halted brewing save for a brief comeback in the late 1930s. In 1993, the modern era emerged with a handful of breweries opening across the city. However, Marble Brewery's 2008 opening revived Albuquerque's dormant craft beer scene. Since its opening, the city has welcomed dozens of breweries, brewpubs and taprooms. Writer Chris Jackson recounts the hoppy history of brewing in the Duke City.

Urban Development Challenges, Risks and Resilience in Asian Mega Cities by R.B. Singh Pdf

In this book, an interdisciplinary research group of faculty members, researchers, professionals, and planners contributed to an understanding of the dynamics and dimensions of emerging challenges and risks in megacities in the rapidly changing urban environments in Asia and examined emerging resilience themes from the point of view of sustainability and public policy. The world’s urban population in 2009 was approximately 3.4 billion and Asia’s urban population was about 1.72 billion. Between 2010 and 2020, 411 million people will be added to Asian cities (60 % of the growth in the world’s urban population). By 2020, of the world’s urban population of 4.2 billion, approximately 2.2 billion will be in Asia. China and India will contribute 31.3 % of the total world urban population by 2025. Developing Asia’s projected global share of CO2 emissions for energy consumption will increase from 30 % in 2006 to 43 % by 2030. City regions serve as magnets for people, enterprise, and culture, but with urbanisation , the worst form of visible poverty becomes prominent. The Asian region, with a slum population of an estimated 505.5 million people, remains host to over half of the world’s slum population . The book provides information on a comprehensive range of environmental threats faced by the inhabitants of megacities. It also offers a wide and multidisciplinary group of case studies from rapidly growing megacities (with populations of more than 5 million) from developed and developing countries of Asia.

Mega Cities by Mattei Dogan,John D. Kasarda Pdf

Volume II: MEGA-CITIES Mega-Cities presents an in-depth analysis of ten cities, prepared by noted scholars who have lived and studied in the cities under scrutiny. This volume covers the role giant cities play in their regions, successes and failures of their public policy, and their most pressing political and environmental problems. "Unlike Volume I, Volume II presents a comparative problems-oriented description of urbanization using ten of the largest cities in the world. This is a wonderful compliment to the first volume in which conceptual frameworks of urbanization were utilized in describing the urban dynamics of specific cities. In again selecting studies by leading scholars of cities representative of all the world's regions, the editors have produced in both volumes a remarkably successful comparative analysis of world urbanization. . . . Without question, the editors have contributed enormously to the literature on comparative world urbanization, an area in which there is still much to do. . . . This volume and its companion are invaluable resources and inspirations to all those who have an interest in the urban dynamics in this rapidly changing world. Cross cultural analysis is no easy accomplishment, but the editors and the authors have done it successfully and the community of urban scholars is indebted to them." --Journal of Developing Societies

Cities and Homelessness by Joaquin Jay Gonzalez III,Mickey P. McGee Pdf

Homelessness in America's cities remains a growing problem. The homeless today face the same challenges as in years past: poverty, tenuous or no ties to family and friends, physical and mental health issues, and substance abuse. Compared to the 1950s to 1970s, more homeless are now sleeping on city streets versus in shelters or single room hotels. Homelessness rates are affected by economic trends, lack of equitable and inclusive healthcare and housing, decline in public assistance programs, and natural and man-made disasters. This collection of essays covers case studies, innovations, practices and policies of municipalities coping with homelessness in the 21st century.

Riding Rockets by Mike Mullane Pdf

Selected as a Mission Specialist in 1978 in the first group of shuttle astronauts, Mike Mullane completed three missions and logged 356 hours aboard the Discovery and Atlantis shuttles. It was a dream come true. As a boy, Mullane could only read about space travel in science fiction, but the launch of Sputnik changed all that. Space flight became a possible dream and Mike Mullane set out to make it come true. In this absorbing memoir, Mullane gives the first-ever look into the often hilarious, sometime volatile dynamics of space shuttle astronauts - a class that included Vietnam War veterans, feminists, and propeller-headed scientists. With unprecedented candour, Mullane describes the chilling fear and unparalleled joy of space flight. As his career centred around the Challenger disaster, Mullane also recounts the heartache of burying his friends and colleagues. And he pulls no punches as he reveals the ins and outs of NASA, frank in his criticisms of the agency. A blast from start to finish, Riding Rockets is a straight-from-the-gut account of what it means to be an astronaut, just in time for this latest generation of stargazers.
