Surface at the Pole (Annotated) by James Calvert Pdf

The nuclear-powered USS Skate was the first submarine to break the surface of the North Pole. Author James Calvert captained the Skate and his book details a series of exploratory underwater voyages north before he and his crew finally found a way to the top and triumphantly smashed through the polar ice-cap on 17 March 1959.This revised edition of Surface at the Pole: The Extraordinary Voyages of the USS Skate includes footnotes and images of the Skate.*Annotated edition with footnotes.*Includes photographs from the polar missions.

South Pole by Elizabeth Leane Pdf

As one of two points where the Earth’s axis meets its surface, the South Pole should be a precisely defined place. But as Elizabeth Leane shows in this book, conceptually it is a place of paradoxes. An invisible spot on a high, featureless ice plateau, the Pole has no obvious material value, yet it is a highly sought-after location, and reaching it on foot is one of the most extreme adventures an explorer can undertake. The Pole is, as Leane shows, a deeply imagined place, and a place of politics, where a series of national claims converge. Leane details the important challenges that the South Pole poses to humanity, asking what it can teach us about ourselves and our relationship with our planet. She examines its allure for explorers such as Robert F. Scott and Roald Amundsen, not to mention the myriad writers and artists who have attempted to capture its strange, inhospitable blankness. She considers the Pole’s advantages for climatologists and other scientists as well as the absurdities and banalities of human interaction with this place. Ranging from the present all the way back to the ancient Greeks, she offers a fascinating—and lavishly illustrated—story about one of the strangest and most important places on Earth.

The Path of the Pole by Charles H. Hapgood Pdf

Hapgood's tour de force is back in print! This riveting account of how earth's poles have flipped positions many times is the culmination of Hapgood's extensive research of Antarctica, ancient maps and the geological record. This amazing book discusses the various pole shifts in earth's history -- occurring when earth's crust slips in the inner core -- and gives evidence for each one. It also predicts future pole shifts: a planetary alignment will cause the next one on 5 May 2000! Packed with illustrations, this book is the reference other books on the subject cite over and over again. With millennium madness in full swing, this is just the book to generate even more excitement at the unknown possibilities.

Surface at the Pole by Cmdr. James Calvert Pdf

In this 1960 book, Surface at the Pole: The Extraordinary Voyages of the U.S.S. Skate, U.S. Navy Commander James F. Calvert described his experiences captaining at the Pole. In 1959, after traveling 3,000 miles (4,800 km) to the pole in 12 days, Skate became the first submarine to surface through the ice when it reached the North Pole on March 17, 1959. There they released the ashes of Australian polar explorer Sir George Hubert Wilkins, who died in November 1958, and who had been the first to try to reach the pole by submarine. The ability to travel under and break through the ice was a major achievement during the Cold War as it allowed the U.S. Navy’s submarines to avoid detection under the ice while being within range to launch their Polaris missiles from points far closer to the Soviet Union.

Computation of Two-dimensional Magnetic Anomolies Through Use of Pole-line Sets by Wilfred P. Hasbrouck Pdf

Total field magnetic anomalies can be computed for groups of two-dimensional bodies of irregular cross section by assuming each body to be either bounded by a bundle of magnetic pole lines or enclosed by a set of planes within which the surface density of magnetic poles is a constant. Increasing the number of pole lines through use of an interpolator improves the quality of the pole-line method and makes it very useful for computing the anticipated magnetic effect from shallow, high-magnetization bodies whose surfaces are essentially nonplanar. This paper describes a computer procedure which uses both the pole-line and bounded-plane techniques, presents the computer program and its development, and gives examples of its use. The ability of the method to affect two-dimensional terrain corrections in lava-covered areas is demonstrated by a realistically modeled lava tube whose anomaly could not have been seen reliably if terrain effect had not been removed.

RHEED Transmission Mode and Pole Figures by Gwo-Ching Wang,Toh-Ming Lu Pdf

This unique book covers the fundamental principle of electron diffraction, basic instrumentation of RHEED, definitions of textures in thin films and nanostructures, mechanisms and control of texture formation, and examples of RHEED transmission mode measurements of texture and texture evolution of thin films and nanostructures. Also presented is a new application of RHEED in the transmission mode called RHEED pole figure technique that can be used to monitor the texture evolution in thin film growth and nanostructures and is not limited to single crystal epitaxial film growth. Details of the construction of RHEED pole figures and the interpretation of observed pole figures are presented. Materials covered include metals, semiconductors, and thin insulators. This book also: Presents a new application of RHEED in the transmission mode Introduces a variety of textures from metals, semiconductors, compound semiconductors, and their characteristics in RHEED pole figures Provides examples of RHEED measurements of texture and texture evolution, construction of RHEED pole figures, and interpretation of observed pole figures RHEED Transmission Mode and Pole Figures: Thin Film and Nanostructure Texture Analysis is ideal for researchers in materials science and engineering and nanotechnology.
