Swedish Textiles (Classic Reprint) by Emelie Von Walterstorff Pdf

Excerpt from Swedish Textiles Textile art has been practised in Sweden as a home industry from the most primitive times. It seems to have become instinctive to the Swedish woman and inseparable from the appointments of the Swedish home. During the course of centuries, in which the art has been carried on, certain methods and many characteristic and beautiful designs became traditional. It is not surprising therefore that, although for several years past in Sweden this delightful home industry declined, it has lately experienced a revival as a domestic occupation. It has often been noted that identical geometric patterns are found in the designs of all times and countries. This is so because both raw materials and all methods of workmanship lend them selves naturally to certain geometric forms and combinations. Swedish peasant textiles have not been an exception to this rule, but with the traditional forms in general use other motives have been incorporated from time to time, some borrowed from oriental textiles and some from those of Europe prior to the 16th century. Later European art has but very slightly if at all influenced peasant textile designs except in the case of tapestries and certain embroideries. As a rule the old designs have beeni' preserved and made use of; they have been developed and remodelled with admirable faithfulness, skill, love and imagination. Being of good material and well made an article after serving for more than a generation may have been replaced by another exac'tly like it. Most of the textiles reproduced in this volume, when their age is not stated, date from the middle of the 18th century to the middle of the lgth; after that period a decline set in, in nearly every part of the country, and the factory goods made their entry into the homes. Fragmentation and Repair by Shelley Rhodes Pdf

Discover the rich creative possibilities of fragmentation and repair in textile art. Fragmentation and repair are two of the biggest buzzwords in textile and mixed-media art. In this fascinating book, renowned artist Shelley Rhodes explores both concepts, with a wealth of fresh ideas and practical advice. Drawing on her own practice, Shelley explains how she reconstructs and reassembles cloth, paper and other materials to create new pieces, often incorporating found objects and items she has collected over the years to add depth and emotional resonance. From piercing and devoré to patching and darning, techniques include: Fragmentation of materials, text and image. Repair using darning and patching along with pins, tape, adhesive and plaster. The Japanese concepts of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in imperfection) and mottainai (using every last scrap). Using salvaged and recycled materials, and repurposing household items. Methods of distressing and manipulating surfaces including weathering, abrasion, burning, piercing, staining and burying. Collage, working in a series and collecting fragments. Beautifully illustrated with Shelley's own pieces alongside those of other leading artists, this fascinating book is the ideal companion for any textile artist wanting to bring notions of fragility, fragmentation and repair into their own work.

The Unwritten Book by Suzanne F Hubbard Pdf

Suzanne F. Hubbard grew up in a highly intellectual family where life's big questions were the daily conversation. Perhaps the most unanswerable came from her mother, the late visionary Barbara Marx Hubbard, who asked in response to the bombs dropped on Japan in 1945: "What is the meaning of powerful technologies which could serve a greater good?" Crises and strife in this century, including far-reaching global ramifications of COVID-19, have revealed the devastating effects when peaceful purposes are not the primary goal or guide. Suzanne's life as a weaver, mother, and gardener has drawn out a humanizing wisdom of the unwritten book. She shows how marrying our universal wisdom with personal objectives could organically become the new business-as-usual.
