Symbolic and Numerical Computation for Artificial Intelligence by Bruce R. Donald,Deepak Kapur,Joseph L. Mundy Pdf

Over the last decade, there has been considerable progress in investigating methods of symbolic mathematics in many application areas of computer science and artifical intelligence, such as engineering design, solid and geometric modelling, robotics and motion planning, and machine vision. This research has produced few applications within engineering and robotics because of the combinatorial cost of symbolic techniques. Therefore, it is essential to investigate approaches for systematic integration of symbolic with numerical techniques which are efficient for handling the huge amount of data that arises in practical applications, while at the same time maintain a logically consistent solution framework. Symbolic and Numerical Computation for Artificial Intelligence gives an overview of applications in machine vision, robotics and engineering design where there is a need for integrating symbolic and numerical methods. It also illustrates the case for an integrated symbolic and numerical environment to support the needs of these applications. This book will be essential reading for researchers in applied mathematics, symbolic and algebraic manipulation, and applied artificial intell

Numerical Computation 1 by Christoph W. Ueberhuber Pdf

This book deals with various aspects of scientific numerical computing. No at tempt was made to be complete or encyclopedic. The successful solution of a numerical problem has many facets and consequently involves different fields of computer science. Computer numerics- as opposed to computer algebra- is thus based on applied mathematics, numerical analysis and numerical computation as well as on certain areas of computer science such as computer architecture and operating systems. Applied Mathemalies I I I Numerical Analysis Analysis, Algebra I I Numerical Computation Symbolic Computation I Operating Systems Computer Hardware Each chapter begins with sample situations taken from specific fields of appli cation. Abstract and general formulations of mathematical problems are then presented. Following this abstract level, a general discussion about principles and methods for the numerical solution of mathematical problems is presented. Relevant algorithms are developed and their efficiency and the accuracy of their results is assessed. It is then explained as to how they can be obtained in the form of numerical software. The reader is presented with various ways of applying the general methods and principles to particular classes of problems and approaches to extracting practically useful solutions with appropriately chosen numerical software are developed. Potential difficulties and obstacles are examined, and ways of avoiding them are discussed. The volume and diversity of all the available numerical software is tremendous.

Recent Developments in Complex Analysis and Computer Algebra by R.P. Gilbert,Joji Kajiwara,Yongzhi S. Xu Pdf

This volume consists of papers presented in the special sessions on "Complex and Numerical Analysis", "Value Distribution Theory and Complex Domains", and "Use of Symbolic Computation in Mathematics Education" of the ISAAC'97 Congress held at the University of Delaware, during June 2-7, 1997. The ISAAC Congress coincided with a U.S.-Japan Seminar also held at the University of Delaware. The latter was supported by the National Science Foundation through Grant INT-9603029 and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science through Grant MTCS-134. It was natural that the participants of both meetings should interact and consequently several persons attending the Congress also presented papers in the Seminar. The success of the ISAAC Congress and the U.S.-Japan Seminar has led to the ISAAC'99 Congress being held in Fukuoka, Japan during August 1999. Many of the same participants will return to this Seminar. Indeed, it appears that the spirit of the U.S.-Japan Seminar will be continued every second year as part of the ISAAC Congresses. We decided to include with the papers presented in the ISAAC Congress and the U.S.-Japan Seminar several very good papers by colleagues from the former Soviet Union. These participants in the ISAAC Congress attended at their own expense.

Mathematical Geosciences by Joseph L. Awange,Béla Paláncz,Robert H. Lewis,Lajos Völgyesi Pdf

This book showcases powerful new hybrid methods that combine numerical and symbolic algorithms. Hybrid algorithm research is currently one of the most promising directions in the context of geosciences mathematics and computer mathematics in general. One important topic addressed here with a broad range of applications is the solution of multivariate polynomial systems by means of resultants and Groebner bases. But that’s barely the beginning, as the authors proceed to discuss genetic algorithms, integer programming, symbolic regression, parallel computing, and many other topics. The book is strictly goal-oriented, focusing on the solution of fundamental problems in the geosciences, such as positioning and point cloud problems. As such, at no point does it discuss purely theoretical mathematics. "The book delivers hybrid symbolic-numeric solutions, which are a large and growing area at the boundary of mathematics and computer science." Dr. Daniel Li chtbau

Scientific Programming by Jorge Alberto Calvo Pdf

This book offers an introduction to computer programming, numerical analysis, and other mathematical ideas that extend the basic topics learned in calculus. It illustrates how mathematicians and scientists write computer programs, covering the general building blocks of programming languages and a description of how these concepts fit together to allow computers to produce the results they do. Topics explored here include binary arithmetic, algorithms for rendering graphics, the smooth interpolation of discrete data, and the numerical approximation of non-elementary integrals. The book uses an open-source computer algebra system called Maxima. Using Maxima, first-time programmers can perform familiar tasks, such as graphing functions or solving equations, and learn the basic structures of programming before moving on to other popular programming languages. The epilogue provides some simple examples of how this process works in practice. The book will particularly appeal to students who have finished their calculus sequence.

Computer Algebra by R. Albrecht,B. Buchberger,G.E. Collins,R. Loos Pdf

The journal Computing has established a series of supplement volumes the fourth of which appears this year. Its purpose is to provide a coherent presentation of a new topic in a single volume. The previous subjects were Computer Arithmetic 1977, Fundamentals of Numerical Computation 1980, and Parallel Processes and Related Automata 1981; the topic of this 1982 Supplementum to Computing is Computer Algebra. This subject, which emerged in the early nineteen sixties, has also been referred to as "symbolic and algebraic computation" or "formula manipulation". Algebraic algorithms have been receiving increasing interest as a result of the recognition of the central role of algorithms in computer science. They can be easily specified in a formal and rigorous way and provide solutions to problems known and studied for a long time. Whereas traditional algebra is concerned with constructive methods, computer algebra is furthermore interested in efficiency, in implementation, and in hardware and software aspects of the algorithms. It develops that in deciding effectiveness and determining efficiency of algebraic methods many other tools - recursion theory, logic, analysis and combinatorics, for example - are necessary. In the beginning of the use of computers for symbolic algebra it soon became apparent that the straightforward textbook methods were often very inefficient. Instead of turning to numerical approximation methods, computer algebra studies systematically the sources of the inefficiency and searches for alternative algebraic methods to improve or even replace the algorithms.

Numeric Computation and Statistical Data Analysis on the Java Platform by Sergei V. Chekanov Pdf

Numerical computation, knowledge discovery and statistical data analysis integrated with powerful 2D and 3D graphics for visualization are the key topics of this book. The Python code examples powered by the Java platform can easily be transformed to other programming languages, such as Java, Groovy, Ruby and BeanShell. This book equips the reader with a computational platform which, unlike other statistical programs, is not limited by a single programming language. The author focuses on practical programming aspects and covers a broad range of topics, from basic introduction to the Python language on the Java platform (Jython), to descriptive statistics, symbolic calculations, neural networks, non-linear regression analysis and many other data-mining topics. He discusses how to find regularities in real-world data, how to classify data, and how to process data for knowledge discoveries. The code snippets are so short that they easily fit into single pages. Numeric Computation and Statistical Data Analysis on the Java Platform is a great choice for those who want to learn how statistical data analysis can be done using popular programming languages, who want to integrate data analysis algorithms in full-scale applications, and deploy such calculations on the web pages or computational servers regardless of their operating system. It is an excellent reference for scientific computations to solve real-world problems using a comprehensive stack of open-source Java libraries included in the DataMelt (DMelt) project and will be appreciated by many data-analysis scientists, engineers and students.

Symbolic Computation, Number Theory, Special Functions, Physics and Combinatorics by Frank G. Garvan,Mourad E.H. Ismail Pdf

These are the proceedings of the conference "Symbolic Computation, Number Theory, Special Functions, Physics and Combinatorics" held at the Department of Mathematics, University of Florida, Gainesville, from November 11 to 13, 1999. The main emphasis of the conference was Com puter Algebra (i. e. symbolic computation) and how it related to the fields of Number Theory, Special Functions, Physics and Combinatorics. A subject that is common to all of these fields is q-series. We brought together those who do symbolic computation with q-series and those who need q-series in cluding workers in Physics and Combinatorics. The goal of the conference was to inform mathematicians and physicists who use q-series of the latest developments in the field of q-series and especially how symbolic computa tion has aided these developments. Over 60 people were invited to participate in the conference. We ended up having 45 participants at the conference, including six one hour plenary speakers and 28 half hour speakers. There were talks in all the areas we were hoping for. There were three software demonstrations.
