Symposium on Biophysics and Physiology of Biological Transport by Liana Bolis,V. Capraro,K.R. Porter,J.D. Robertson Pdf

The study of cell membranes began to attract increasing interest before the turn of the present century with the observations of 0 verton. Since that time many investigators have become interested in the broad problem of structure and function of the membrane and today we find ourselVes at a stage in which several branches of research, particularly physical chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, physiology and pharmacology have come together, leading to the possibility of obtaining a better perspective of the overall problems. The purpose of this Symposium was to assemble in an orderly sequence representations of the knowledge of membranes achieved to date in the areas of the various disciplines. It was thought that to bring together many points of view on a problem should allow the conferees to see better what had been accomplished, what has been overlooked and what needs further development. It is to be hoped that efforts of this type have and will fulfill the desired purpose. This volume contains the majority of the papers contributed by the participants in the Symposium. In addition, it seemed logical to place at the beginning of each chapter at least one general survey of the subject which would help those who were less acquainted with the problem to derive the most benefit from their reading.

Biochemistry of Membrane Transport by G. Semenza,E. Carafoli Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the FEBS Sym posium on the Biochemistry of Membrane Transport, which was held at the Swiss Institute of Technology, Zlirich, July 18-23, 1976. Of the speakers invited or iginally, only five could not attend the meeting, and of the lectures given, all but one of the texts are published here. Thus, this volume gives a faithful ac count of the way the meeting was originally conceived and actually took place. This Symposium on Biochemistry of Membrane Transport was the first Symposium sponsored by the FEBS outside the yearly FEBS-Meetings, after the Special Meeting on Industrial Biochemistry, which took place in Dublin in 1973, and it reflects the interest and the trend for gatherings of smaller size than the official FEBS Meetings. The topic of the Symposium was an easy choice, not only because membrane transport is becom ing more and more important to biochemistry every year, but also because of the long-standing interest of Swiss Science in the field. In the choice of the topics and of the speakers, efforts were made to achieve as balanced a coverage of the area as possible. However, since some aspects of membrane biochemistry were dealt with extensively at the parallel 10th Inter national Congress of Biochemistry in Hamburg, GFR, cer tain topics were given less emphasis than others. The Symposium was attended by about 400 participants (we expected 200-250); among them 48 were invited speakers, and some 200 contributed posters.

Biophysics and Physiology of Carbon Dioxide by C. Bauer,G. Gros,H. Bartels Pdf

This volume contains the papers presented at the symposium on Biophysics and Physiology of Carbon Dioxide held at Regensburg, April 17-20, 1979. The manuscripts represent the full or even an extended account of the oral presentations. We have decided not to include any part of the discussions which took place after the lectures because this would have led to an undue enlargement of the already substantial volume. The symposium brought together some 60 scientists of various disciplines including biophysicists, chemists, biochemists, physiologists, pharmacologists, as well as clinicians whose research activities are cen tered around the various aspects of the reactions and the regulatory role of CO within the body. 2 In view of the fact that numerous textbooks and Proceedings of Symposia deal expertly with the role of CO in acid-base balance, it 2 was decided not to include this aspect in the present symposium. This holds also for the biochemistry of carboxylation and decarboxylation reactions. Particular emphasis was placed on the following subjects: (1) Chemical reactions of CO in water and facilitated diffusion of CO2 , 2 (2) CO adducts to proteins, in particular hemoglobin, and peptide 2 hormones, (3) structure and function of carbonic anhydrase, (4) CO 2 exchange and carbonic anhydrase activity in respiratory and nonrespi ratory systems. Each section contains at least one introductory paper that presents the current knowledge in a more general framework.

Molecular Biology and Physiology of Water and Solute Transport by Stefan Hohmann,Søren Nors Nielsen,Søren Nielsen Pdf

Biophysical studies in the 1950ies and 1960ies led to the realization that the water permeability of certain biological membranes must be due to the presence of water transporting proteins. This hypothesis was confirmed in 1991 and 1992 with the pioneering discovery of the first molecular membrane water channel, CHIP28, by Agre and coworkers. This integral membrane protein, which is abundant in the erythrocyte membrane and in many epithelial cells, is now called aquaporin-1 or AQP1. Thus the terms water channel or aquaporin are synonymous. In July 2000 more than 200 researchers came together in Gothenburg, Sweden, for the `3rd International Conference on the Molecular Biology and Physiology of Water and Solute Transport" to discuss progress in this emerging research field. 58 different presentations from this conference are the basis for this book. Cumulatively, these 58 short chapters provide a balanced overview complementing numerous recent reviews in this field.

Concepts in Biochemical Pharmacology by H.S. Ackermann,Bernard B. Brodie,James R. Gillette Pdf

This volume of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology (Concepts in Biochemical Pharmacology) will show that pharma cology has finally arrived as a true discipline in its own right, and is no longer the handmaiden of organic chemistry and physiology. Instead it is an amalgam of all the biological sciences including biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, physiology, pathology and clinical medicine. In the volumes that make up Concepts in Bioche mical Pharmacology we hope to convince Medical Schools what should now be obvious, that pharmacology is no longer that dull topic bridging the basic sciences with medicine, but is probably the most important subject in the medical curriculum. We are grateful for the advice of Dr. BYRON CLARKE, Director of the Pharmacology-Toxicology Program at the National Insti tutes of Health, whose support made possible much of the work described in this volume. Cellular Aspects of Membrane Permeability by E. Schoffeniels Pdf

Cellular Aspects of Membrane Permeability describes the state of knowledge on permeability problems and interprets experimental results within the framework of working hypotheses. The book discusses membrane permeability with some biochemical perspective presented to explain the origin and adaptations of animal life. The text explains the process and the driving forces affecting the permeability characteristics of the experimental object. It then discusses the distribution of ions and molecules between two phases separated by a living membrane. Then the text analyzes the chemical nature of the molecular architecture that causes such permeability characteristics. The book addresses the electrical potential profiles of epithelial tissues, and then discusses the conducting membranes. It also explains the relationships between inorganic ions, sugar, amino acids, fatty acids, and bioelectric potentials. The book also explains the physical nature of such chemical nature and structure of living membranes. The text then describes the structure of the cellular surface and the structural organization of the cell. The selection can prove useful for biologists, microbiologists, zoologists, and students and professors of biology and its related disciplines.

Oxygen Transport to Tissue XXXI by Eiji Takahashi,Duane F. Bruley Pdf

The International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (ISOTT, www. isott. info) is an interdisciplinary society comprising about 250 members worldwide. Its purpose is to further the understanding of all aspects of the processes involved in the transport of oxygen from the air to its ultimate consumption in the cells of the various organs of the body. The annual meeting brings together scientists, engineers, clinicians and mathematicians in a unique int- national forum for the exchange of information and knowledge, the updating of participants on latest developments and techniques, and the discussion of controversial issues within the field of oxygen transport to tissue. Founded in 1973, the society has been the leading platform for the presentation of many of the technological and conceptual developments within the field both at the meetings themselves and in the proceedings of the society. These have been published first by Plenum Publishing (1973), then by Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers and presently by Springer Publishing, all in the Advances In Expe- mental Medicine and Biology Series. The 36th Annual ISOTT conference was held in Sapporo, Japan during August 3–7, 2008. It was the second occasion that the ISOTT meeting was held in Japan; the first one was held in the same place in 1987 organized by Professor Masaji Mochizuki.
