Slice Hyperholomorphic Schur Analysis by Daniel Alpay,Fabrizio Colombo,Irene Sabadini Pdf

This book defines and examines the counterpart of Schur functions and Schur analysis in the slice hyperholomorphic setting. It is organized into three parts: the first introduces readers to classical Schur analysis, while the second offers background material on quaternions, slice hyperholomorphic functions, and quaternionic functional analysis. The third part represents the core of the book and explores quaternionic Schur analysis and its various applications. The book includes previously unpublished results and provides the basis for new directions of research.

An Advanced Complex Analysis Problem Book by Daniel Alpay Pdf

This is an exercises book at the beginning graduate level, whose aim is to illustrate some of the connections between functional analysis and the theory of functions of one variable. A key role is played by the notions of positive definite kernel and of reproducing kernel Hilbert space. A number of facts from functional analysis and topological vector spaces are surveyed. Then, various Hilbert spaces of analytic functions are studied.

Indefinite Inner Product Spaces, Schur Analysis, and Differential Equations by Daniel Alpay,Bernd Kirstein Pdf

This volume, which is dedicated to Heinz Langer, includes biographical material and carefully selected papers. Heinz Langer has made fundamental contributions to operator theory. In particular, he has studied the domains of operator pencils and nonlinear eigenvalue problems, the theory of indefinite inner product spaces, operator theory in Pontryagin and Krein spaces, and applications to mathematical physics. His works include studies on and applications of Schur analysis in the indefinite setting, where the factorization theorems put forward by Krein and Langer for generalized Schur functions, and by Dijksma-Langer-Luger-Shondin, play a key role. The contributions in this volume reflect Heinz Langer’s chief research interests and will appeal to a broad readership whose work involves operator theory.

Fast Direct Solvers for Elliptic PDEs by Per-Gunnar Martinsson Pdf

Fast solvers for elliptic PDEs form a pillar of scientific computing. They enable detailed and accurate simulations of electromagnetic fields, fluid flows, biochemical processes, and much more. This textbook provides an introduction to fast solvers from the point of view of integral equation formulations, which lead to unparalleled accuracy and speed in many applications. The focus is on fast algorithms for handling dense matrices that arise in the discretization of integral operators, such as the fast multipole method and fast direct solvers. While the emphasis is on techniques for dense matrices, the text also describes how similar techniques give rise to linear complexity algorithms for computing the inverse or the LU factorization of a sparse matrix resulting from the direct discretization of an elliptic PDE. This is the first textbook to detail the active field of fast direct solvers, introducing readers to modern linear algebraic techniques for accelerating computations, such as randomized algorithms, interpolative decompositions, and data-sparse hierarchical matrix representations. Written with an emphasis on mathematical intuition rather than theoretical details, it is richly illustrated and provides pseudocode for all key techniques. Fast Direct Solvers for Elliptic PDEs is appropriate for graduate students in applied mathematics and scientific computing, engineers and scientists looking for an accessible introduction to integral equation methods and fast solvers, and researchers in computational mathematics who want to quickly catch up on recent advances in randomized algorithms and techniques for working with data-sparse matrices.

Interpolation, Schur Functions and Moment Problems II by Daniel Alpay,Bernd Kirstein Pdf

The origins of Schur analysis lie in a 1917 article by Issai Schur in which he constructed a numerical sequence to correspond to a holomorphic contractive function on the unit disk. These sequences are now known as Schur parameter sequences. Schur analysis has grown significantly since its beginnings in the early twentieth century and now encompasses a wide variety of problems related to several classes of holomorphic functions and their matricial generalizations. These problems include interpolation and moment problems as well as Schur parametrization of particular classes of contractive or nonnegative Hermitian block matrices. This book is primarily devoted to topics related to matrix versions of classical interpolation and moment problems. The major themes include Schur analysis of nonnegative Hermitian block Hankel matrices and the construction of Schur-type algorithms. This book also covers a number of recent developments in orthogonal rational matrix functions, matrix-valued Carathéodory functions and maximal weight solutions for particular matricial moment problems on the unit circle.

Exploiting Hidden Structure in Matrix Computations: Algorithms and Applications by Michele Benzi,Dario Bini,Daniel Kressner,Hans Munthe-Kaas,Charles Van Loan Pdf

Focusing on special matrices and matrices which are in some sense `near’ to structured matrices, this volume covers a broad range of topics of current interest in numerical linear algebra. Exploitation of these less obvious structural properties can be of great importance in the design of efficient numerical methods, for example algorithms for matrices with low-rank block structure, matrices with decay, and structured tensor computations. Applications range from quantum chemistry to queuing theory. Structured matrices arise frequently in applications. Examples include banded and sparse matrices, Toeplitz-type matrices, and matrices with semi-separable or quasi-separable structure, as well as Hamiltonian and symplectic matrices. The associated literature is enormous, and many efficient algorithms have been developed for solving problems involving such matrices. The text arose from a C.I.M.E. course held in Cetraro (Italy) in June 2015 which aimed to present this fast growing field to young researchers, exploiting the expertise of five leading lecturers with different theoretical and application perspectives.

A Glimpse at Hilbert Space Operators by Sheldon Axler,Peter Rosenthal,Donald Sarason Pdf

Paul Richard Halmos, who lived a life of unbounded devotion to mathematics and to the mathematical community, died at the age of 90 on October 2, 2006. This volume is a memorial to Paul by operator theorists he inspired. Paul’sinitial research, beginning with his 1938Ph.D. thesis at the University of Illinois under Joseph Doob, was in probability, ergodic theory, and measure theory. A shift occurred in the 1950s when Paul’s interest in foundations led him to invent a subject he termed algebraic logic, resulting in a succession of papers on that subject appearing between 1954 and 1961, and the book Algebraic Logic, published in 1962. Paul’s ?rst two papers in pure operator theory appeared in 1950. After 1960 Paul’s research focused on Hilbert space operators, a subject he viewed as enc- passing ?nite-dimensional linear algebra. Beyond his research, Paul contributed to mathematics and to its community in manifold ways: as a renowned expositor, as an innovative teacher, as a tireless editor, and through unstinting service to the American Mathematical Society and to the Mathematical Association of America. Much of Paul’s in?uence ?owed at a personal level. Paul had a genuine, uncalculating interest in people; he developed an enormous number of friendships over the years, both with mathematicians and with nonmathematicians. Many of his mathematical friends, including the editors ofthisvolume, whileabsorbingabundantquantitiesofmathematicsatPaul’sknee, learned from his advice and his example what it means to be a mathematician.
