Drugs in Context is an independent, peer reviewed and practice orientated review of all the significant data on a specific drug, placed in the context of the disease and clinical practice setting. Tadalafil; Editorial: The stigma associated with ED persists. As ED is perceived to be embarrassing, many men find it difficult to admit to it and to talk about it, whilst many GPs also find it difficult to discuss. Disease Overview: ED represents a huge burden on public health, and impacts on society, the individual and the patient's partner and family. Drug Review: In clinical trials, tadalafil has been shown to be more effective than placebo in promoting and maintaining erections after normal sexual stimulation, and allowing patients to successfully complete sexual intercourse. Improving Practice: With this expanding global prevalence of ED, coupled with a growing awareness of the condition among physicians and patients alike, the management of the condition has become firmly routed in primary care.

Oral Pharmacotherapy for Male Sexual Dysfunction by Gregory A. Broderick Pdf

For the generation that reached sexual maturity in the 1960s, the “pill” became synonymous with sexual freedom and started a sexual revolution. For women it meant freedom from the fear of pregnancy, and for men enhanced sexual opportunity. The new era of the pill has nothing to do with fertility, but everything to do with sex. The first orally effective prescr- tion drug for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) was marketed in 1998. ® Sildenafil (Viagra ) has rejuvenated the aging male veterans of the sexual revolution, forever changed the science of sexual medicine, and tra- formed society’s perspective on aging and sex. This class of drugs, known as oral phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE-type 5), is highly effective in the treatment of ED. Since its introduction there has been a much greater awa- ness of ED, its comorbidities, and its effects on the quality of life. In 1997, while preparing to address the Endocrine Society on the occasion of the 92nd American Urological Association meeting, I first looked at the p- clinical studies of sildenafil. I thought “this will change everything” and it clearly has—changing practice patterns in sexual medicine, and the at- tudes of patients, potential patients, and their partners. Two new PDE-type ® ® 5 inhibitors, tadalafil (Cialis ) and vardenafil (Levitra ), were first approved by the European Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products and subsequently by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003 and 2004.

Drug Interactions in Infectious Diseases by Stephen C. Piscitelli,Keith Rodvold Pdf

Over the past 25 years, the world’s population has witnessed an explosion in kno- edge about infectious diseases. The global population is coming to the realization that diseases long recognized to cause substantial suffering, such as malaria, tuberculosis, schistosomiasis, and hepatitis, can be diagnosed and treated, and that transmission can be prevented using tools that are available, and which may be becoming increasingly affordable. The global population is recognizing that few infections are local: the travel of humans, other animals, insects, and food transport pathogens around the world, often with astonishing rapidity. New pathogens are appearing, either newly recognized or newly developing, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), avian inf- enza, metapneumovirus, or hepatitis C, which are causing human morbidity and m- tality. Finally, there is growing fear that dangerous pathogens may be intentionally introduced into human populations by deranged individuals or terrorist organizations. The potential to use drugs or biologic agents to treat and prevent infectious diseases has increased dramatically over the past quarter century as we have learned more about the biology of many of these agents, and as we have developed techniques to discover new agents by high throughput screening programs and by sophisticated drug design and synthesis.
