Tales From Behind The Steel Curtain: The Best Stories of the '79 Steelers by Jim Wexell Pdf

The "Immaculate Reception" may have started it all, but the 1979 Pittsburgh Steelers put the stamp on the modern era’s greatest sports dynasty. It’s not even a debate. No other National Football League team in the modern sports era—as defined by Nielson—won so much in so little time. The tag is sure to stay with the Steelers for a long, long time. Fans in Pittsburgh can thank NFL free agency, but only in part. They should really thank the ’79 Steelers for winning a fourth title when, really, the team should not have done so. The 1979 Steelers were not supposed to win a championship. The Steel Curtain was in decline, and the Houston Oilers were pounding on the door of the AFC. By the end of the season, of course, the banged-up Oilers were not to be feared, not with the San Diego Chargers gathering steam. In the NFC, the Dallas Cowboys could taste revenge, particularly after Steelers coach Chuck Noll had mocked them unmercifully following the previous year’s Super Bowl. However, the Steelers persevered. "We probably won it more on desire, football intellect," said Steelers defensive superstar "Mean" Joe Greene. Greene admitted that the defense was in decline. He even admitted his great career was in decline, but he never thought the end of the dynasty was near. Star quarterback Terry Bradshaw, on the other hand, with his career just taking off, knew the end was at hand, and after his greatest season, after his second of back-to-back Super Bowl Most Valuable Player awards, Bradshaw hinted at retirement. "I probably should have," he admits 25 years later. The 1979 season had exhausted Bradshaw, a topic he talks about in Tales from Behind the Steel Curtain. Greene also has plenty to say. So do their teammates and their coaches, not to mention the scouts, front office and support personnel, media, and fans. They all have tales to tell about the key season of one of the greatest dynasties the sports world has ever seen. He now returns to his earlier profession of writer-author and gives you even further insight into the performers who have inspired the Steelers Nation. Their path to the top is reflected in observ-ations he offers with admiration, amusement, and blunt criticism.Seasoned with laugh-out-loud anecdotes and touching vignettes, Double Yoi! shares Cope's most personal moments, from labor pains in birthing the "Terrible Towel" to the reason behind his charity work with the physically and mentally afflicted -- among them, his son Danny -- to his emotional dedication to his late wife, Mildred, who died after a long battle with cancer. The author's most embarrassing moments, including getting the hook during his Pro Football Hall of Fame acceptance remarks, are here as well.Famed for his raspy voice and incendiary style, Myron Cope transcended mere broadcasting to become part of the Pittsburgh Steelers mythos and a football legend. From firsthand experiences, Cope brings his takes on the famous, such as Terry Bradshaw, Muhammad Ali, the Dallas "Cryboys," and Bill Cowher. Cope also explains how he helped John F. Kennedy become America's first Catholic President and how Frank Sinatra nearly cost him his job. You'll alsolearn why he was kidnapped by Franco's Italian Army and how his birth name was deemed "too Jewish" to be his byline. Double Yoi! is the ultimate collector's item for the Pittsburgh-loyal and the standard for accomplished sportswriters

Walking Together Forever by Jim Jackson Pdf

Fred Shero, the head coach of the teams forever remembered as the Broad Street Bullies, chose the hours before Game 4 of the 1974 Stanley Cup Finals to inscribe this on the locker room blackboard: Win together now and we walk together forever. Well, of course, that team went on to win not one, but two Stanley Cups. Shero could not have been more prophetic. Thirty years later, members of those Cup teams are still revered in the city of Philadelphia and throughout the hockey world, for that matter. In Walking Together Forever: The Broad Street Bullies Then and Now author Jim Jackson wants to bring people back to those glorious days of the 1974 and 1975 Stanley Cup championships through the telling of so many of the incredible anecdotes that emanated from the many memorable characters that created the glory: Walking Together Forever: The Broad Street Bullies Then and Now will follow the major principals of the Cup wins, taking readers through the remainder of those heroes' hockey careers, into retirement, and up to the present. Many of the stories of their personal trials, travails, and successes since hoisting Lord Stanley's Cup are as compelling as those from the championship years themselves. In the eyes of hockey fans, members of those teams have indeed walked together forever.

Their Life's Work by Gary M. Pomerantz Pdf

“The definitive book of the 1970s Pittsburgh Steelers” (Scott Brown, ESPN), Their Life’s Work is a triumphant yet intimate literary sports book that—through exquisite reportage, love, and honesty—tells the full story of the best team to ever play the game. The Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s won an unprecedented and unmatched four Super Bowls in six years. A dozen of those Steelers players, coaches, and executives have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, and three decades later their names echo in popular memory: “Mean” Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Mike Webster, Jack Lambert, Lynn Swann, and John Stallworth. In ways exhilarating and heartbreaking, they define not only the brotherhood of sports but those elements of the game that engage tens of millions of Americans: its artistry and its brutality. Drawing on hundreds of interviews, Their Life’s Work is a richly textured story of a team and a sport, what the game gave these men, and what the game took. It gave fame, wealth, and, above all, a brotherhood of players, twelve of whom died before turning sixty. To a man, they said they’d do it again, all of it. They bared the soul of the game to Gary Pomerantz, and he captured it wondrously. “Here is a book as hard-hitting and powerful as the ‘Steel Curtain’ dynasty that Pomerantz depicts so deftly. It’s the NFL’s version of The Boys of Summer, with equal parts triumph and melancholy. Pomerantz’s writing is strong, straightforward, funny, sentimental, and blunt. It’s as working class and gritty as the men he writes about” (The Tampa Tribune, Top 10 Sports Books of the Year).
