Tales of Futures Past by Paola Iovene Pdf

Most studies of Chinese literature conflate the category of the future with notions of progress and nation building, and with the utopian visions broadcast by the Maoist and post-Mao developmental state. The future is thus understood as a preconceived endpoint that is propagated, at times even imposed, by a center of power. By contrast, Tales of Futures Past introduces "anticipation"—the expectations that permeate life as it unfolds—as a lens through which to reexamine the textual, institutional, and experiential aspects of Chinese literary culture from the 1950s to 2011. In doing so, Paola Iovene connects the emergence of new literary genres with changing visions of the future in contemporary China. This book provides a nuanced and dynamic account of the relationship between state discourses, market pressures, and individual writers and texts. It stresses authors' and editors' efforts to redefine what constitutes literature under changing political and economic circumstances. Engaging with questions of translation, temporality, formation of genres, and stylistic change, Iovene mines Chinese science fiction and popular science, puts forward a new interpretation of familiar Chinese avant-garde fiction, and offers close readings of texts that have not yet received any attention in English-language scholarship. Far-ranging in its chronological scope and impressive in its interdisciplinary approach, this book rethinks the legacies of socialism in postsocialist Chinese literary modernity.

The King of Futures Past by Jamie Simo Pdf

Long ago, a king fought a war against a race of supernatural beings known as Old Ones. The battle was long and costly, but in the end the Old Ones were "driven off the face of the earth" and locked away. However, the war was neither won nor lost, as the spell meant to contain them was not permanent. Centuries passed and the king who had taken on the title of the Hunter faded into the pages of legend, to return, it is said, when the Old Ones break free once again. As a child, Malora Osonne's parents told her the story of the Hunter but she regarded it as just a Faerie tale until strange things start happening that logic has no answer for and she is forced to consider that the legend might be true. But legends tell only half the story and she will discover that she has a much greater role to play in this twisted drama of desire, revenge and madness than merely inventor's daughter.

Pacific Futures by Warwick Anderson,Miranda Johnson,Barbara Brookes Pdf

How, when, and why has the Pacific been a locus for imagining different futures by those living there as well as passing through? What does that tell us about the distinctiveness or otherwise of this “sea of islands”? Foregrounding the work of leading and emerging scholars of Oceania, Pacific Futures brings together a diverse set of approaches to, and examples of, how futures are being conceived in the region and have been imagined in the past. Individual chapters engage the various and sometimes contested futures yearned for, unrealized, and even lost or forgotten, that are particular to the Pacific as a region, ocean, island network, destination, and home. Contributors recuperate the futures hoped for and dreamed up by a vast array of islanders and outlanders—from Indigenous federalists to Lutheran improvers to Cantonese small business owners—making these histories of the future visible. In so doing, the collection intervenes in debates about globalization in the Pacific—and how the region is acted on by outside forces—and postcolonial debates that emphasize the agency and resistance of Pacific peoples in the context of centuries of colonial endeavor. With a view to the effects of the “slow violence” of climate change, the volume also challenges scholars to think about the conditions of possibility for future-thinking at all in the midst of a global crisis that promises cataclysmic effects for the region. Pacific Futures highlights futures conceived in the context of a modernity coproduced by diverse Pacific peoples, taking resistance to categorization as a starting point rather than a conclusion. With its hospitable approach to thinking about history making and future thinking, one that is open to a wide range of methodological, epistemological, and political interests and commitments, the volume will encourage the writing of new histories of the Pacific and new ways of talking about history in this field, the region, and beyond.

Socialist Cosmopolitanism by Nicolai Volland Pdf

Socialist Cosmopolitanism offers an innovative interpretation of literary works from the Mao era that reads Chinese socialist literature as world literature. As Nicolai Volland demonstrates, after 1949 China engaged with the world beyond its borders in a variety of ways and on many levels—politically, economically, and culturally. Far from rejecting the worldliness of earlier eras, the young People's Republic developed its own cosmopolitanism. Rather than a radical break with the past, Chinese socialist literature should be seen as an integral and important chapter in China's long search to find a place within world literature. Socialist Cosmopolitanism revisits a range of genres, from poetry and land reform novels to science fiction and children's literature, and shows how Chinese writers and readers alike saw their own literary production as part of a much larger literary universe. This literary space, reaching from Beijing to Berlin, from Prague to Pyongyang, from Warsaw to Moscow to Hanoi, allowed authors and texts to travel, reinventing the meaning of world literature. Chinese socialist literature was not driven solely by politics but by an ambitious—but ultimately doomed—attempt to redraw the literary world map.

Of Futures Past by Julian Bound Pdf

OF FUTURES PAST a Novel by JULIAN BOUND 'Looking to her feet as white light faded around her, fine grained sands now replaced the carpeted flooring of New York gallery. No panic came to her on gazing out onto a view of calm seas where treasured artworks had stood only moments before. Listening to the gentle lap of waves she smiled out onto a distant horizon and then to the man beside her, his hand still held in hers."Isn't it beautiful," he said, his words as much statement as question.' Following her death, a young New York art restorer finds herself on a beach accompanied by George, her spirit guide. Explaining she now resides between lives George guides her to a cliff top library. Inside she finds a book containing all the past lives she has ever lived. Seated together she reads of her past lifetimes lived throughout the centuries. Be it an artist's model of 16th century Renaissance Italy, a geisha of ancient Japan, or a Tibetan Buddhist monk living in the foothills of the Himalaya, each lifetime holds answers towards the progression of her soul, as seen in those she meets with through the years, be them friend or foe, or ultimately the soul mate she encounters throughout her many lifetimes. Between uncovering the events of her previous lives, George explains the reasons for the situations that unfolded within her past, his explanations bringing forward an awareness of the characteristics unique to her own soul and of the trials she at times has been faced with. From Julian Bound, the author of 'The Geisha and The Monk', 'Subway of Light' and 'A Gardener's Tale', 'Of Futures Past' is a story of discovery, offering an insight into how our actions in one lifetime can effect moments in those to follow, shown with subtle teachings of love and compassion. 'A moment, a respite from what has been, of what is to come... And so, a new lifetime begins.' Filled with excitement and wonder, a journey through lifetimes passed. Beautiful. Revolutionary Stagecraft by Tarryn Li-Min Chun Pdf

Revolutionary Stagecraft draws on a rich corpus of literary, historical, and technical materials to reveal a deep entanglement among technological modernization, political agendas, and the performing arts in modern China. This unique approach to Chinese theater history combines a close look at plays themselves, performance practices, technical theater details, and behind-the-scenes debates over “how to” make theater amid the political upheavals of China’s 20th century. The book begins at a pivotal moment in the 1920s—when Chinese theater artists began to import, use, and write about modern stage equipment—and ends in the 1980s when China's scientific and technological boom began. By examining iconic plays and performances from the perspective of the stage technologies involved, Tarryn Li-Min Chun provides a fresh perspective on their composition and staging. The chapters include stories on the challenges of creating imitation neon, rigging up a makeshift revolving stage, and representing a nuclear bomb detonating onstage. In thinking about theater through technicity, the author mines well-studied materials such as dramatic texts and performance reviews for hidden technical details and brings to light a number of previously untapped sources such as technical journals and manuals; set design renderings, lighting plots, and prop schematics; and stage technology how-to guides for amateur thespians. This approach focuses on material stage technologies, situating these objects equally in relation to their technical potential, their human use, and the social, political, economic, and cultural forces that influence them. In each of its case studies, Revolutionary Stagecraft reveals the complex and at times surprising ways in which Chinese theater artists and technicians of the 20th century envisioned and enacted their own revolutions through the materiality of the theater apparatus.
