Target Organ Toxicity in Marine and Freshwater Teleosts by Daniel Schlenk,William H. Benson Pdf

Addressing the numerous gaps in current information, Target Organ Toxicology in Marine and Freshwater Teleosts is an essential resource for researchers and professionals in aquatic toxicology and environmental risk assessment. All the chapters are written by researchers who are internationally recognised for their work in mechanistic aspects of aquatic toxicology. Each chapter focuses on a specific target organ or physiological system and describes how various agents disrupt the normal physiological system and processes. This volume is devoted to specific organs with coverage of the gill, kidney, skin, liver and gut. The companion volume, Systems, provides coverage of toxic effects in the central nervous, immune, neurobehavioural and reproductive systems as well as describing general mechanisms of toxicity.

Global International Waters Assessment by Anonim Pdf

This report presents the GIWA assessment of the Pacific Islands region, which comprises 23 island nations or territories that exhibit enormous geomorphological, climatic, cultural and demographic diversity within a vast oceanic expanse. The region is unique because its inhabitants, who have close links with, and great cultural, economic and spiritual dependence on, their terrestrial and marine environment, are often the owners and users of these resources and ultimately govern their conservation and sustainable use. In addition to highlighting the overexploitation of fish and other living resources in densely populated areas, this report emphasises the vulnerability of many of these small island states to the impacts of climate change, particularly sea level rise and fluctuations in rainfall, which has enormous influence on the availability of freshwater in the region. The root causes of overexploitation and freshwater shortage are illustrated using several case studies and potential policy options to mitigate these problems in the future are discussed.

Animals and Environments by Dr. Steve Morris,André Vosloo Pdf

This volume collects selected papers from the 3rd ICCPB in Africa: Animals and Environments. A wide and integrated discussion of how animals persist in their normal habitats aims to improve our appreciation of animal interaction with, and response to, environment. In a time of persistent reductionism in biological studies, the collected papers discuss both breadth and depth of adaptive animal biology from more holistic perspectives. The discussion ranges from unicellular organisms to whole animals. Themes include; molecular bases of physiological response to hypoxia and the role of hypoxia inducible factors; adaptive mechanisms of ion homeostasis in crustaceans, signaling and respiration in insects; aspects of metal contamination; extremes of temperature and water availability; foraging, predation, and the acquisition of food; in the light of specific environmental demands. This volume will be of specific interest researchers in the field of adaptive molecular and evolutionary physiology and biochemistry. Biologists interested in how animals respond to their environment - be it with a molecular, physiological or ecological emphasis will find the breath of issues both stimulating and informative. "Animals and Environments" collates works in Comparative and Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry - covering a range of subject material and approaches seldom brought together in a single volume. Inclusion in a single volume of molecular, biochemical and physiological material aimed at addressing adaptation to environment Many of the individual works are reviews in their own right and provide an excellent resource. The diversity of approaches and material examining the evolution of adaptive mechanisms.
