Teaching Literature in Modern Foreign Languages by Fotini Diamantidaki Pdf

From plays to poetry, Le Petit Nicolas to the Association for Language Learning (ALL) Literature wiki, this book shows trainee teachers of MFL, teachers in schools, teacher educators, how literature can be an essential tool for developing students' cultural awareness as well as language skills. With contributions from Ruth Heilbronn, Jane Jones and other leading scholars, it covers a wide range of approaches including looking at how to support students to develop the skills they need to read and discuss texts, and how to use stories as a pedagogic tool, rather than just a way to develop reading skills. Examples of teaching French, German, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish are used throughout, but the book draws together resources and strategies for use in teaching all modern foreign languages. Supporting students to develop into creative, reflective teachers, this book offers support for readers to develop their own tasks for their pupils and questions throughout to keep them engaged and encouraging them to critically engage with the content. Seemingly daunting articles are made much more approachable for readers with windows on research which provide a summary of relevant research papers, with full reference details for follow up.

The Teaching of Modern Foreign Languages and the Training of Teachers (Classic Reprint) by Karl Breul Pdf

Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Foreign Languages and the Training of Teachers The lectures were originally intended to form an Intro duction to some criticism lessons of modern language lessons given by the students of the Training College, and the principles set forth in the lectures were at once practically applied in the detailed criticism of the lessons heard. The lectures were intended to be above all suggestive and stimu lating, but no attempt could be made to discuss in full the views either of the old school of language teachers and examiners who are hostile to any reform or of some modern extremists. A few slight alterations were introduced and some references to recent literature on the subject added when the lectures were revised for the Press, but, apart from these exceptions, they are substantially printed as they were first written in the Christmas Vacation of 1894. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... THE TEACHING OF MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN OUR SECONDARY SCHOOLS. The subject which I propose to discuss to-night will certainly not be likened to a smooth and flower-strewn path leading down hill. If it is not exactly a thorny path, it may yet appear to outsiders to be stony, dull, and probably devoid of those beautiful vistas which those who unweariedly climb the upward path have a reasonable hope of beholding in the end. Moreover my lectures must of necessity be somewhat technical, and the limited time at my disposal strictly forbids me to enter some of the by-paths from the main road which often afford no small amount of amusement beside material for very serious reflection. One of these digressions would be a short sketch of the early days of Modern Language teaching, a discussion of the old quaint 'babees bookes' or 'bookes of Curtesy' which sometimes combined teaching of Modern Languages with teaching of good manners'. Another digression would be a discussion of the results frequently obtained by the present system of Modern Language teaching in our Secondary Schools. It has been my lot for more than twelve years to make from time to time a careful study of that very remarkable and ever increasing part of educational literature which is 1 See my edition of the fifteenth century poem ' The Boke of Curtesy" in Kolbing's Englische Studien, 1X. (1885), 51 sqq. r known to the scholastic world by the high-sounding name of 'examination papers.' From these papers and the answers to them one may gather some ideas as to the aims and results of Modern Language teaching--here I refer especially to the teaching of German and French--in our Secondary Schools, and if I were to tabulate my experiences, the results would in some cases be very...
