Evolutionary and Revolutionary Technologies for Mining by National Research Council,Committee on Earth Resources,Board on Earth Sciences and Resources,National Materials Advisory Board,Committee on Technologies for the Mining Industries Pdf

The Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT) of the U. S. Department of Energy commissioned the National Research Council (NRC) to undertake a study on required technologies for the Mining Industries of the Future Program to complement information provided to the program by the National Mining Association. Subsequently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health also became a sponsor of this study, and the Statement of Task was expanded to include health and safety. The overall objectives of this study are: (a) to review available information on the U.S. mining industry; (b) to identify critical research and development needs related to the exploration, mining, and processing of coal, minerals, and metals; and (c) to examine the federal contribution to research and development in mining processes.

The 5S Innovation Model by Antonio Nieto (Mining engineer) Pdf

"This book is aimed to help us look into the future of mining by defining ultimate operational conditions that will be present in a typical mining operation regardless how far in the future. It introduces an innovation strategy designed to identify current and future technologies to achieve specific ultimate operational conditions that will be present in "the mine of the future". The mining innovation strategy presented is the result of several innovation projects where the author had the opportunity to assist and had successfully implemented at several mining companies and mining research institutions around the world, including Australia, South Africa, United States, Canada, Peru, and Mexico. The innovation strategy is designed to be consistent with any type of mining method as well as any commodity being mined, such as metal or nonmetal mining, soft-rock or hard-rock, underground and surface mining. The five ultimate mining operational conditions mentioned in this book were carefully defined considering current operational and technology trends, that will keep any mining company competitive during the following decades. The mining innovation strategy thus considers five ultimate operational conditions or drivers: (1) achieving maximum safety, (2) simplifying systems, (3) using smart-intelligent systems, (4) designing stealth operations, and (5) sustainable use of environmental and human resources within the operation. The five innovation drivers are common denominators to any mining method, regardless of their operational nature or commodity being mined either today or in the future. It is thus envisaged that the mining innovation model introduced in this book can serve as an initial guideline for the mining industry to better identify current and future technologies that need to be addressed today"--

Global Challenges for Innovation in Mining Industries by Alica Daly,David Humphreys,Julio Raffo,Giulia Valacchi Pdf

People have been digging in the ground for useful minerals for thousands of years. Mineral materials are the foundation of modern industrial society. As the global population grows and standards of living in emerging and developing countries rises, the demand for mineral products is increasing. Mining ensures that we have an adequate supply of the raw materials to produce all the components of modern life, and at competitive prices. Innovation is central to meeting the diverse challenges faced by the mining industry. It is critical for developing techniques for finding new deposits of minerals, enabling us to recover increasing amounts of minerals from the ground in a cost-effective manner, and ensuring it this is done in a way that is as environmentally responsible. This book provides the first in-depth global analysis of the innovation ecosystem in the mining sector. This book is Open Access.

Innovation in the Mining Sector and Cycles in Commodity Prices by Giulia Valacchi,Julio Raffo,Alica Daly,David Humphreys,World Intellectual Property Organization Pdf

This paper analyses the evolution of innovation in the mining sector and how this innovation responds to the economic environment, in particular to changes in commodity prices. For this purpose, we combine commodity price data with innovation data as proxied by patent filings extracted from a novel unit record database containing comprehensive patent and firm level data for the mining sector from 1970 to 2015. We include patents registered both by mining companies and mining equipment, technology and service (METS) firms. With a multi-country panel analysis, we find that innovation in the mining sector is cyclical. Innovation increases in periods of high commodity prices while decreasing during commodity price recessions. Our results suggest that innovation increases mostly with long price cycle variations, while mostly unaffected by medium and short cycles. METS related innovation seem the driving force of this mechanism. In contrast, countries specializing in mining industries are found to be slower in reacting to price changes.

Mining and Green Growth in the EECCA Region by Oecd Pdf

For most countries in the Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) region, mining is an important economic sector that contributes to employment and public revenue. Despite mining's potential to cause long-term negative environmental impacts, governments in the region have a vital role to play in supporting better environmental performance in the sector and ensuring the industry can be a progressive part of a greener economy. This report examines the environmental impacts of mining in the EECCA and provides policy makers with guidance to reconcile environmental and competitiveness objectives in the mining sector.
