During the decade there were many developments in laser research and numerous applications of the laser were made in fields of science and engineering. Many theoretical and experimental ad vances were made in the Soviet Union; often they paralleled those taking place in the United States and elsewhere but started from different points, proceeded along different paths, and yielded dif ferent insights into the physical processes taking place in the la ser. The present book offers a unified theory of lasers by which the operating characteristics of the laser are described and re lated to the details of the radiation emitted. Extensive emenda tions to the original, Soviet edition were supplied by the author and incorporated into the text, and references to the English literature were added to the translation to permit the reader to readily ex plore topics in greater detail. Since the Soviet edition's appearance in 1968 one very impor tant area has developed-that of mode locking and picosecond pulse production. This area is so important that no comprehensive work on the laser published in 1972 could neglect it. Accordingly, Chap ter XII was added to round off the treatment. I am indebted to my colleague, Professor A. J. Carruthers of the University of Min nesota for many illuminating discussions on mode locking.

An experimental check is made on a series of predictions of the theory of ionization domains. A new low-voltage luminescence of zinc sulfide is described and investigated and is found to be due to a high-frequency electrical instability. A detailed study of the electrical properties of the instability and of the characteristics of the emission testifies to the pre-breakdown character of the electroluminescence and to the acousto electrical nature of the instability. The luminescence excitation spectra of AIN crystals excited in the region of the fundamental absorption contain lines belonging to excitons and their phonon replicas. The symmetry of the electronic and vibrational transitions corresponding to parts of these lines is interpreted. The results of a study of the scattering of light by electron - hole drops in germanium are cited. The results are discussed on the basis of a theory of exciton condensation in which allowance is made for the diffusion of excitons toward the surface of the drops and for the surface tens ion of the electron - hole liquid. This volume will be of interest to a wide range of scientific workers, particularly those engaged in the study of luminescence and physics of semiconductors.

Despite more than 200 years of sulfur research the chemistry of elemental sulfur and sulfur-rich compounds is still full of “white spots” which have to be filled in with solid knowledge and reliable data. This situation is parti- larly regrettable since elemental sulfur is one of the most important raw - terials of the chemical industry produced in record-breaking quantities of ca. 35 million tons annually worldwide and mainly used for the production of sulfuric acid. Fortunately, enormous progress has been made during the last 30 years in the understanding of the “yellow element”. As the result of extensive inter- tional research activities sulfur has now become the element with the largest number of allotropes, the element with the largest number of binary oxides, and also the element with the largest number of binary nitrides. Sulfur, a typical non-metal, has been found to become a metal at high pressure and is even superconducting at 10 K under a pressure of 93 GPa and at 17 K at 260 GPa, respectively. This is the highest critical temperature of all chemical elements. Actually, the pressure-temperature phase diagram of sulfur is one of the most complicated of all elements and still needs further investigation.
