Ten Lectures on Statistical and Structural Pattern Recognition by M.I. Schlesinger,Václav Hlavác Pdf

Preface to the English edition This monograph Ten Lectur,es on Statistical and Structural Pattern Recognition uncovers the close relationship between various well known pattern recognition problems that have so far been considered independent. These relationships became apparent when formal procedures addressing not only known prob lems but also their generalisations were discovered. The generalised problem formulations were analysed mathematically and unified algorithms were found. The book unifies of two main streams ill pattern recognition-the statisti cal a11d structural ones. In addition to this bridging on the uppermost level, the book mentions several other unexpected relations within statistical and structural methods. The monograph is intended for experts, for students, as well as for those who want to enter the field of pattern recognition. The theory is built up from scratch with almost no assumptions about any prior knowledge of the reader. Even when rigorous mathematical language is used we make an effort to keep the text easy to comprehend. This approach makes the book suitable for students at the beginning of their scientific career. Basic building blocks are explained in a style of an accessible intellectual exercise, thus promoting good practice in reading mathematical text. The paradoxes, beauty, and pitfalls of scientific research are shown on examples from pattern recognition. Each lecture is amended by a discussion with an inquisitive student that elucidates and deepens the explanation, providing additional pointers to computational procedures and deep rooted errors.

Ten Lectures on the Basics of Cognitive Grammar by Ronald Langacker Pdf

The book offers a basic introduction to the theory of Cognitive Grammar, which claims that meaning resides in conceptualization, and that grammar is inherently meaningful, residing in the structuring and symbolization of conceptual content.

Ten Lectures on Cognitive Sociolinguistics by Dirk Geeraerts Pdf

Cognitive Sociolinguistics combines the interest in meaning of Cognitive Linguistics with the interest in social variation of sociolinguistics, converging on two domains of enquiry: variation of meaning, and the meaning of variation. These Ten Lectures, a transcribed version of talks given by professor Geeraerts in 2009 at Beihang University in Beijing, introduce and illustrate both dimensions. The ‘variation of meaning’ perspective involves looking at types of semantic and categorial variation, at the role of social and cultural factors in semantic variation and change, and at the interplay of stereotypes, prototypes and norms. The ‘meaning of variation’ perspective involves looking at the way in which categorization processes of the type studied by Cognitive Linguistics shape how scholars and laymen think about language variation.

Ten Lectures on Cognitive Linguistics by George Lakoff Pdf

Ten Lectures on Cognitive Linguistics presents ten lectures, in both audio and transcribed text, given by George Lakoff in Beijing in April 2004. Lakoff gives an account of the background of cognitive linguistics, and basic mechanisms of thought, grammar, neural theory of language, metaphor, implications for Philosophy, and political linguistics. He does so in a manner that is accessible for anyone, including undergraduate level students and a general audience. With the massive experience of being a linguist for over 50 years, and being one of the founding fathers of the field, George Lakoff is one of the best possible experts to introduce Cognitive Linguistics to anyone. The lectures for this book were given at The China International Forum on Cognitive Linguistics in April 2004.

Ten Lectures on the Probabilistic Method by Joel Spencer Pdf

This update of the 1987 title of the same name is an examination of what is currently known about the probabilistic method, written by one of its principal developers. Based on the notes from Spencer's 1986 series of ten lectures, this new edition contains an additional lecture: The Janson Inequalities. These inequalities allow accurate approximation of extremely small probabilities. A new algorithmic approach to the Lovasz Local Lemma, attributed to Jozsef Beck, has been added to Lecture 8, as well.

Ten Lectures on Random Media by Erwin Bolthausen,Alain-Sol Sznitman Pdf

The following notes grew out oflectures held during the DMV-Seminar on Random Media in November 1999 at the Mathematics Research Institute of Oberwolfach, and in February-March 2000 at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. In both places the atmosphere was very friendly and stimulating. The positive response of the audience was encouragement enough to write up these notes. I hope they will carryover the enjoyment of the live lectures. I whole heartedly wish to thank Profs. Matthias Kreck and Jean-Franc;ois Le Gall who were respon sible for these two very enjoyable visits, Laurent Miclo for his comments on an earlier version of these notes, and last but not least Erwin Bolthausen who was my accomplice during the DMV-Seminar. A Brief Introduction The main theme of this series of lectures are "Random motions in random me dia". The subject gathers a variety of probabilistic models often originated from physical sciences such as solid state physics, physical chemistry, oceanography, biophysics . . . , in which typically some diffusion mechanism takes place in an inho mogeneous medium. Randomness appears at two levels. It comes in the description of the motion of the particle diffusing in the medium, this is a rather traditional point of view for probability theory; but it also comes in the very description of the medium in which the diffusion takes place.

Ten Lectures on Grammar in the Mind by Ewa Dąbrowska Pdf

This volume presents a synthesis of research in cognitive linguistics and the psychology of language. It highlights the tension between “linguists’ grammars”, which are influenced by considerations of economy and elegance, and “speakers’ grammars”, which are messy and less than fully general.

Ten Lectures on Diachronic Construction Grammar by Martin Hilpert Pdf

In this book, Martin Hilpert lays out how Construction Grammar can be applied to the study of language change. In a series of ten lectures on Diachronic Construction Grammar, the book presents the theoretical foundations, open questions, and methodological approaches that inform the constructional analysis of diachronic processes in language. The lectures address issues such as constructional networks, competition between constructions, shifts in collocational preferences, and differentiation and attraction in constructional change. The book features analyses that utilize modern corpus-linguistic methodologies and that draw on current theoretical discussions in usage-based linguistics. It is relevant for researchers and students in cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics, and historical linguistics.
