Lectures on Operator Theory by B. V. Rajarama Bhat,George A. Elliott,Peter A. Fillmore Pdf

This book resulted from the lectures held at The Fields Institute (Waterloo, ON, Canada). Leading international experts presented current results on the theory of C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras, together with recent work on the classification of C*-algebras. Much of the material in the book is appearing here for the first time and is not available elsewhere in the literature.

Ten Lectures on the Interface between Analytic Number Theory and Harmonic Analysis by Hugh L. Montgomery Pdf

This volume contains lectures presented by Hugh L. Montgomery at the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference held at Kansas State University in May 1990. The book focuses on important topics in analytic number theory that involve ideas from harmonic analysis. One particularly valuable aspect of the book is that it collects material that was either unpublished or that had appeared only in the research literature. The book should be a useful resource for harmonic analysts interested in moving into research in analytic number theory. In addition, it is suitable as a textbook in an advanced graduate topics course in number theory.

Operator Algebras and Their Modules by David P. Blecher,Christian Le Merdy Pdf

This invaluable reference is the first to present the general theory of algebras of operators on a Hilbert space, and the modules over such algebras. The new theory of operator spaces is presented early on and the text assembles the basic concepts, theory and methodologies needed to equip a beginning researcher in this area. A major trend in modern mathematics, inspired largely by physics, is toward `noncommutative' or `quantized' phenomena. In functional analysis, this has appeared notably under the name of `operator spaces', which is a variant of Banach spaces which is particularly appropriate for solving problems concerning spaces or algebras of operators on Hilbert space arising in 'noncommutative mathematics'. The category of operator spaces includes operator algebras, selfadjoint (that is, C*-algebras) or otherwise. Also, most of the important modules over operator algebras are operator spaces. A common treatment of the subjects of C*-algebras, Non-selfadjoint operator algebras, and modules over such algebras (such as Hilbert C*-modules), together under the umbrella of operator space theory, is the main topic of the book. A general theory of operator algebras, and their modules, naturally develops out of the operator space methodology. Indeed, operator space theory is a sensitive enough medium to reflect accurately many important non-commutative phenomena. Using recent advances in the field, the book shows how the underlying operator space structure captures, very precisely, the profound relations between the algebraic and the functional analytic structures involved. The rich interplay between spectral theory, operator theory, C*-algebra and von Neumann algebra techniques, and the influx of important ideas from related disciplines, such as pure algebra, Banach space theory, Banach algebras, and abstract function theory is highlighted. Each chapter ends with a lengthy section of notes containing a wealth of additional information.

Selfadjoint and Nonselfadjoint Operator Algebras and Operator Theory by Robert S. Doran Pdf

This book contains papers presented at the NSF/CBMS Regional Conference on Coordinates in Operator Algebras, held at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in May 1990. During the conference, in addition to a series of ten lectures by Paul S. Muhly (which will be published in a CBMS Regional Conference Series volume), twenty-eight lectures were delivered by conference participants on a broad range of topics of current interest in operator algebras and operator theory. This volume contains slightly expanded versions of most of those lectures. Participants were encouraged to bring open problems to the conference, and, as a result, over one hundred problems and questions are scattered throughout this volume. Readers will appreciate this book for the overview it provides of current topics and methods of operator algebras and operator theory.

Lectures on Symplectic Manifolds by Alan Weinstein Pdf

The first six sections of these notes contain a description of some of the basic constructions and results on symplectic manifolds and lagrangian submanifolds. Section 7, on intersections of largrangian submanifolds, is still mostly internal to symplectic geometry, but it contains some applications to machanics and dynamical systems. Sections 8, 9, and 10 are devoted to various aspects of the quantization problem. In Section 10 there is a feedback of ideas from quantization theory into symplectic geometry itslef.

Lectures on Hilbert Cube Manifolds by Thomas A. Chapman Pdf

The goal of these lectures is to present an introduction to the geometric topology of the Hilbert cube Q and separable metric manifolds modeled on Q, which are called here Hilbert cube manifolds or Q-manifolds. In the past ten years there has been a great deal of research on Q and Q-manifolds which is scattered throughout several papers in the literature. The author presents here a self-contained treatment of only a few of these results in the hope that it will stimulate further interest in this area. No new material is presented here and no attempt has been made to be complete. For example, the author has omitted the important theorem of Schori-West stating that the hyperspace of closed subsets of $[0,1]$ is homeomorphic to Q. In an appendix (prepared independently by R. D. Anderson, D. W. Curtis, R. Schori and G. Kozlowski) there is a list of problems which are of current interest. This includes problems on Q-manifolds as well as manifolds modeled on various linear spaces. The reader is referred to this for a much broader perspective of the field. In the first four chapters, the basic tools which are needed in all of the remaining chapters are presented. Beyond this there seem to be at least two possible courses of action. The reader who is interested only in the triangulation and classification of Q-manifolds should read straight through (avoiding only Chapter VI). In particular the topological invariance of Whitehead torsion appears in Section 38. The reader who is interested in R. D. Edwards' recent proof that every ANR is a Q-manifold factor should read the first four chapters and then (with the single exception of 26.1) skip over to Chapters XIII and XIV.

Hopf Algebras and Their Actions on Rings by Susan Montgomery Pdf

The last ten years have seen a number of significant advances in Hopf algebras. The best known is the introduction of quantum groups, which are Hopf algebras that arose in mathematical physics and now have connections to many areas of mathematics. In addition, several conjectures of Kaplansky have been solved, the most striking of which is a kind of Lagrange's theorem for Hopf algebras. Work on actions of Hopf algebras has unified earlier results on group actions, actions of Lie algebras, and graded algebras. This book brings together many of these recent developments from the viewpoint of the algebraic structure of Hopf algebras and their actions and coactions. Quantum groups are treated as an important example, rather than as an end in themselves. The two introductory chapters review definitions and basic facts; otherwise, most of the material has not previously appeared in book form. Providing an accessible introduction to Hopf algebras, this book would make an excellent graduate textbook for a course in Hopf algebras or an introduction to quantum groups.

Dual Algebras with Applications to Invariant Subspaces and Dilation Theory by Hari Bercovici,Ciprian Foiaş,Carl M. Pearcy Pdf

The theory of dual algebras has made tremendous progress since 1978, when Scott Brown originated some of the main ideas to solve the invariant subspace problem for subnormal operators. This book presents ideas concerning the solution of systems of simultaneous equations in the predual of a dual algebra, thereby developing a dilation theory.
