Terminology and Language Planning by Bassey Edem Antia Pdf

Changing socio-political landscapes, the dynamics of "glocalization", among other factors, are spawning new policy attitudes towards multilingualism, and putting language planning on the map. With respect to terminology, this book suggests that to be relevant and sustainable, language planning would have to define its mission as the deregulation of access to specialized knowledge, and correspondingly be founded on substantially different methods and theoretical bases: epistemology and ontology of specialized domains; research on language for special purposes (LSP) and collocations; corpus linguistics; and language engineering technologies.

Towards a Systemic Model for Terminology Planning by Abolfazl Zarnikhi Pdf

Previous work on terminology planning can be, more or less, divided into general guidelines, local planning, and translation-based activities. This book, however, by avoiding this line of research and any kind of prescription, represents a movement towards generalisation as a prerequisite of theorisation. Its research is predicated on the hypothesis that all terminological activities are founded upon some fundamental principles, which, at the same time, are manifested through context-bound variations or parameters. A particular advantage of the book is its employing of both field research and a review of research literature. The former allows it to carry out a comparative study by using a maximum variation sampling technique for gathering data from four language agencies of different ecolinguistic situations, namely Termcat (Catalan), TNC (Swedish), DGLFLF (French), and the Academy of Persian Language and Literature in Iran. In order to this, it uses a questionnaire concentrating on the macro- and micro-structures of the target organisations as a route map. The literature review allows the book to benefit from research documents from more than thirty sociolinguistic communities. The book’s unique feature includes the introduction of new concepts such as linguistics of science, systemic terminology, systemic planning, terminology argumentation, and sociocognitive terminometrics, among others. A further distinguishing feature is the fact that it discusses terminology not in a vacuum, but as a component of the language of science system.

Language Planning and Social Change by Robert L. Cooper Pdf

This book describes the ways in which politicians, church leaders, generals, leaders of national movements and others try to influence our use of language. Professor Cooper argues that language planning is never attempted for its own sake. Rather it is carried out for the attainment of nonlinguistic ends such as national integration, political control, economic development, the pacification of minority groups, and mass mobilization. Many examples are discussed, including the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language, feminist campaigns to eliminate sexist bias in language, adult literacy campaigns, the plain language movement, efforts to distinguish American from British spelling, the American bilingual education movement, the creation of writing systems for unwritten languages, and campaigns to rid languages of foreign terms. Language Planning and Social Change is the first book to define the field of language planning and relate it to other aspects of social planning and to social change. The book is accessible and presupposes no special background in linguistics, sociology or political science. It will appeal to applied linguists and to those sociologists, economists and political scientists with an interest in language.

Language Planning from Practice to Theory by Robert B. Kaplan,Richard B. Baldauf Pdf

Language Planning from Practice to Theory examines and reviews the field of language policy and planning. In the first section of the book language policy and planning definitions, current practices, goals and ways of thinking are discussed as a foundation for understanding current practice in the discipline. The central elements of language policy and planning practice are then described from two perspectives. In the second section, the methodology for collecting language planning data is outlined and the key cross-societal issues of language-in-education planning, literacy and economics in language planning are discussed. In the third section, case studies related to language and power, bilingualism and status and specific purpose issues in language planning are covered. The final two chapters draw together the critical issues and problems which have arisen from current practice and which must be considered in building a theory of the discipline. A reference appendix to language planning in national situations is included. The book provides the only up-to-date overview and review of the field of language policy and planning and challenges language planners to think more critically about their discipline. Since language will be planned, there is a need to consider how it will be done.

Iran’s Language Planning Confronting English Abbreviations by Fatemeh Akbari Pdf

This book addresses one of the most crucial and common questions confronting planners of languages other than English, that is, how the impacts of global languages on local languages should be dealt with: internationalization or local language promotion? This empirical study examines the implementation of Iran’s governmental language and terminology policy to accelerate rarely used abbreviation methods in Persian in order to preserve the language from the extensiveness of borrowed English abbreviated forms. This book provides an in-depth analysis of relevant linguistic theories as well as the structure and social context of the Persian language itself, rather than relying on personal opinions or beliefs either in favour of or against abbreviation. The text appeals to politicians, language planners, terminologists, lecturers, authors and translators of scientific works, especially those who are speakers of languages other than English and seek to promote their local languages. This book is particularly relevant to linguistics students (both undergraduate and graduate students) and language teachers and researchers in the broader areas of language education and curriculum design.
