Text and Interpretation as Categories of Theological Thinking by Werner G. Jeanrond Pdf

The aim of this book is to examine the dimensions of an adequate theological hermeneutics and thus to contribute to the present discussion of theological method. One essential concern of theological thinking is the interpretation of texts, such as biblical writings, creeds, dogmas, prayers, etc. This book examines text and interpretation as the two categories of any adequate theory of interpretation. In the first chapter a new, three-dimensional theory of interpretation is developed in critical dialogue with the hermeneutical proposals of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur. The second chapter investigates the concept of text.Ó It examines essential features of the textuality of texts and of the process of reading. Focusing on the theological methodology of David Tracy, the third chapter assesses the hermeneutical character of theology and theology's particular contribution to human understanding. The book may be used as a textbook in courses of systematic and philosophical theology, because it is written without presupposing any special knowledge of the particular topics discussed. It would be most valuable to courses in theological hermeneutics.

Rendering the Word in Theological Hermeneutics by Mark Alan Bowald Pdf

This book proposes an original typology for grasping the differences between diverse types of biblical interpretation, fashioned in a triangle around a major theological and philosophical lacuna: the relation between divine and human action. Despite their purported concern for reading God's word, most modern and postmodern approaches to biblical interpretation do not seriously consider the role of divine agency as having a real influence in and on the process of reading Scripture. Mark Bowald seeks to correct and clarify this deficiency by demonstrating the inevitable role that divine agency plays in contemporary proposals in relation to human agency enacted in the composition of the biblical text and the reader. This book presents an important contribution to the emerging field of theological hermeneutics. Bowald discusses in depth the hermeneutics of George Lindbeck, Hans Frei, Kevin Vanhoozer, Francis Watson, Stephen Fowl, David Kelsey, Werner Jeanrond, Karl Barth, James K.A. Smith, and Nicholas Wolterstorff.

Fundamental Theology by Matthew L. Becker Pdf

Encyclopedic in scope, this book offers wide-ranging coverage of the foundational teachings and practices within the mainstream of the classical Christian tradition. It begins with their roots in the Scriptures, and also branches out into Eastern and Western Christianity, ancient, medieval, and modern, to the present-day. Part I provides an overview of some of these routes, then presents an historical survey of Christianity's major traditions. Part II unpacks some of the character of that revelation, focusing particularly on epistemological and procedural questions. Finally, Part III looks at Christian theology in a university setting: the possibility and shape of theology as a university discipline, its major subfields, and its relations with humanities and the sciences respectively. Fundamental Theology: A Protestant Perspective, 2nd edition, includes a wide range of pedagogical features: - each chapter begins with an outline thesis statement, highlighted in bold - charts and graphs - relevant headings and subheadings employed throughout the book - keywords - provides a survey of pertinent reference literature - questions for review and discussion - annotated suggestions for further reading

The Future of Biblical Interpretation by Stanley E. Porter,Matthew R. Malcolm Pdf

Preaching's Preacher's Guide to the Best Bible Reference for 2014 (Scripture/Hermeneutics) The Bible encompasses a plurality of voices, not only in genre but in perspective. And not surprisingly, interpreters of the Bible have generated a plurality of interpretations. How might biblical scholars work responsibly with and within this plurality? And what are the future directions or possibilities for biblical hermeneutics? The essays in The Future of Biblical Interpretation originated in a conference held in honor of Anthony C. Thiselton, who is well known for his important work in hermeneutics and New Testament interpretation. After an opening essay by Thiselton on "The Future of Biblical Interpretation and Responsible Plurality in Hermeneutics," the contributors look at the issues from a variety of angles—theological, scriptural, kerygmatic, historical, critical, ecclesial and relational. The result is an engaging conversation exploring responsible and productive interpretation of the Bible. A must-read for anyone seriously engaged in biblical scholarship today.

Iconographic Exegesis and Third Isaiah by Izaak Jozias Hulster Pdf

Although scholars employ pictorial material in biblical exegesis, the question of how images from the Ancient Near East can contribute to a better understanding of the Bible has been left unanswered. This is the first monograph to outline a historical method for iconographic exegesis. The methodological study includes both responses to important theoretical questions such as What is an image? and What is culture? and an interdisciplinary exploration of issues of history, art history, archaeology and cultural anthropology. The three-stage method proposed is embedded in hermeneutical and exegetical reflections. The application of iconographical exegesis to the interpretation of metaphors is also considered. In demonstrating the method and its application, Izaak J. de Hulster focuses on Third Isaiah and develops three iconographical exegetical studies on yad in Isaiah 56:5, light in Isaiah 60 and grape processing in Isaiah 63.

God & Culture by D. A. Carson,John Woodbridge Pdf

This book examines a number of facets of contemporary culture and sets forth what thoughtful Christians have been and should be thinking about each one. Written in honor of Carl F.H. Henry on the occasion of his eightieth birthday, the essays in God and Culture are on these topics and by these contributors: •hermeneutics Kevin J. Vanhoozer •pluralism D.A. Carson •eschatology Geoffrey W. Bromiley •anthropology Robert J. Priest •psychology Warren J. Heard, Jr. •philosophy George I. Mavrodes •history Lewis W. Spitz •economics Ian Smith •law Phillip E. Johnson •politics Sir Fred Catherwood •literature Leland Ryken •art Edmund P. Clowney •media Larry W. Poland •science Charles B. Thaxton •environment Loren Wilkinson •bioethics Nigel M. de S. Cameron •human sexuality Armand M. Nicholi, Jr. •personal life-style and leisure J.I. Packer Each of these authors has demonstrated a profound interest in thinking "Christianly" about his subject. Some of the essays scan the ways previous Christians have tried to evaluate each cultural "slice"; all of them offer some guidance regarding what Christians need to bear in mind as our culture rushes on. Some contributors adopt the well-known grid of H. Richard Niebuhr in his classic Christ and Culture; others cut fresh paths. The aim throughout is to foster fidelity to Christ and his gospel while encouraging a comprehensive Christian outlook on our rapidly changing world.

Holy Scripture by John Webster Pdf

May we speak, in the present age, of holy scripture? And what validation of that claim can be offered, robust enough to hold good for both religious practice and intellectual enquiry? John Webster argues that while any understanding of scripture must subject it to proper textual and historical interrogation, it is necessary at the same time to acknowledge the special character of scriptural writing. His 2003 book is an exercise in Christian dogmatics, a loud reaffirmation of the triune God at the heart of a scripture-based Christianity. But it is written with intellectual rigour by a theologian who understands the currents of modern secular thought and is able to work from them towards a constructive position on biblical authority. It will resonate with anyone who has wondered or worried about the grounds on which we may validly regard the Bible as God's direct communication with humanity.

Interpretation of Tongues and Prophecy in 1 Corinthians 12-14, with a Pentecostal Hermeneutics by Jeon Ahn Yongnan Pdf

Bringing “spiritual experience” into the domain of biblical hermeneutics, this book will certainly stimulate current debates within this field, among both Pentecostals and Christians of other traditions. The author also applies a Pentecostal hermeneutical methodology to Paul’s teaching on tongues and prophecy in 1 Corinthians 12–14, opening possibilities to a Pentecostal pneumatology that tends instead to focus on the Lukan narrative. Paul’s texts are reconsidered not as doctrinal or situational documents but as dynamic communication within a living community.

Memory, Narrativity, Self and the Challenge to Think God by Maureen Junker-Kenny,Peter Kenny Pdf

As the first book in English to treat the most recent, as yet untranslated stage of Paul Ricoeur's work, the topical themes of memory and forgiveness as they relate to his theory of self and to the question of God, this publication offers an overview of the fruitfulness of his categories for different theological disciplines by experts from different cultural contexts: North America, Britain, Germany and Scandinavia. Paul Ricoeur's own article on forgiveness as a dimension opened up from beyond human powers, and his contributions to the discussion of his work document a new stage of interaction with Theology.

The Bible and the Crisis of Meaning by Christopher Spinks Pdf

Many of the most pressing issues in theology and the church today depend greatly on the understanding of the bible. Recent debates on the theological interpretation of scripture have emerged which consider whether the meaning of scripture should concern theologians and church leaders at all. The Bible and the Crisis of Meaning is an account of these debates in examining the concept of meaning in current proposals of theological interpretation. The concept of meaning is educed either from the supposed nature of the texts and their authors or from the function of the texts in religious communities. Thus, approaches to theological interpretation become debates between ontological and pragmatic strategists. Stephen Fowl and Kevin Vanhoozer have embraced the term "theological interpretation" for their separate projects, but their ideas of what this means and how "meaning" is a part of it, differ greatly. Christopher Spinks describes their respective concepts of meaning and argues for a more holistic concept that allows theological interpreters to understand their craft not so much as a discovery of intentions or the creation of interests but as a conversation in which truth is mediated.

Divine Eloquence and Human Transformation by Ben Fulford Pdf

Key to a theology of scripture are the important issues of history, consciousness, rhetoric, and how theology functions in relation to interpretation of Christianity's religious texts. Seeking to address a critical problem in theology and the interpretation of scripture raised by modern historical consciousness, Ben Fulford argues for a densely historical and theological reading of scripture centered in a Christological rubric. The argument herein uncovers a figural pattern of divine action and presence in the sacred texts. Tracing the problem through the modern theological heritage, the author turns to a comparative account of theologically patterned reading represented by patristic theology in Gregory of Nazianzus and postliberal theology in its pivotal founder, Hans Frei. The book addresses the challenge of historicity and historical consciousness, argues for the relevance of pre-modern approaches to scripture, and offers a fresh and extensive account of two salient figures from the early and contemporary tradition, thus enacting a theology of retrieval as a resource on a present issue of vital importance.
