The Supervision of Pastoral Care by David A. Steere Pdf
This book offers basic information both for persons under supervision and for those supervising them in pastoral care, drawing upon the expertise and experiences of fifteen pastoral supervisors. In describing key aspects, George Bennett discusses the supervisory contract and preparing for supervision; Kathleen Davis introduces methods of working with clinical material; Mark Jensen presents ways to work with life histories; and Alexa Smith provides a summary of student responses to clinical supervision. To expand various kinds of supervision, Darryl Tiller addresses the use of "self as instrument"; John Lentz considers the supervision of pastoral counseling relationships; Bruce Skaggs describes group supervision; and Carolyn Lindsay presents specific aspects of live supervision. Three chapters address specific problems; Clarence Barton and Amanda Ragland deal with transference and countertransference; Nancy Fontenot examines passivity; and Barbara Sheehan reviews gender issues. Finally, the supervisory model is applied to broader issues; to the supervision of church voulenteers by Grayson Tucker, to supervising teachers in Christian Education programs by Louis Weeks, and to a seminary field education program by editor David A. Steere. This book is a valuable asset for professors, working supervisors, and all persons entering supervision in pastoral care.

Epossumondas by Coleen Salley Pdf
Who's Epossumondas? Why, he's his mama's and his auntie's sweet little patootie, that's who. He's also the silliest, most lovable, most muddleheaded possum south of the Mason-Dixon line! Better choose your words wisely when he's around, 'cause otherwise you never know what you'll get. Epossumondas just might bring you a fist full of crumbs, or a soaking wet puppy, or a scruffy wad of bread--oh, you just wouldn't believe it! Renowned storyteller Coleen Salley and Caldecott Honor illustrator Janet Stevens team up for this outrageous twist on the Southern story of the noodlehead who takes everything way too literally. (Or is that Epossumondas just pulling his mama's leg?)

Steel City Readers by Mary Grover Pdf
An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library. Steel City Readers* makes available, and interprets in detail, a large body of new evidence about past cultures and communities of reading. Its distinctive method is to listen to readers' own voices, rather than theorising about them as an undifferentiated group. Its cogent and engaging structure traces reading journeys from childhood into education and adulthood, and attends to settings from home to school to library. It has a distinctive focus on reading for pleasure and its framework of argument situates that type of reading in relation to dimensions of gender and class. It is grounded in place, and particularly in the context of a specific industrial city: Sheffield. The men and women featured in the book, coming to adulthood in the 1930s and 1940s, rarely regarded reading as a means of self-improvement. It was more usually a compulsive and intensely pleasurable private activity.

Brown Gold by Michelle Martin Pdf
Brown Gold is a compelling history and analysis of African-American children's picturebooks from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. At the turn of the nineteenth century, good children's books about black life were hard to find — if, indeed, young black readers and their parents could even gain entry into the bookstores and libraries. But today, in the "Golden Age" of African-American children's picturebooks, one can find a wealth of titles ranging from Happy to be Nappy to Black is Brown is Tan. In this book, Michelle Martin explores how the genre has evolved from problematic early works such as Epaminondas that were rooted in minstrelsy and stereotype, through the civil rights movement, and onward to contemporary celebrations of blackness. She demonstrates the cultural importance of contemporary favorites through keen historical analysis — scrutinizing the longevity and proliferation of the Coontown series and Ten Little Niggers books, for example — that makes clear how few picturebooks existed in which black children could see themselves and their people positively represented even up until the 1960s. Martin also explores how children's authors and illustrators have addressed major issues in black life and history including racism, the civil rights movement, black feminism, major historical figures, religion, and slavery. Brown Gold adds new depth to the reader's understanding of African-American literature and culture, and illuminates how the round, dynamic characters in these children's novels, novellas, and picturebooks can put a face on the past, a face with which many contemporary readers can identify.
