Christians in the Twenty-First Century by George D. Chryssides,Margaret Z. Wilkins Pdf

'Christians in the Twenty-First Century' examines Christianity as it is understood and practised both by active followers and those who regard themselves as Christian. The book opens with an examination of key Christian concepts - the Bible, the Creeds, the Church and the sacraments - and the major traditions of Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy and Protestantism as well as more recent movements. The book continues with an analysis of the challenges presented by the rise of science, new approaches to biblical scholarship, the rise of fundamentalist movements, the ordination of women, secularization, the interfaith movement, and the impact of the electronic revolution.

Being Christian in the Twenty-First Century by Sam Gould Pdf

Being Christian in the Twenty-first Century was written to help struggling and doubting Christians develop an understanding of Christianity that avoids literalism, creeds, and doctrines--all factors which seem to be driving people away from the church. The book is well suited for individual or group study, complete with a study guide and sample lesson plans. It responds to the call for theological reform advocated by many contemporary clergy and religious leaders. Being Christian does not restate orthodox positions or drift into fundamentalism or sentimentalism. Instead it draws from a broad base of historical, theological, archaeological, and sociological scholarship to place Scripture within its original context, yet present it within a perspective suitable for the twenty-first-century mind. Being Christian is scholarly, yet readable, interesting, and often provocative. One reviewer put it this way, "the book reminds me of a baseball pitcher with a long wind up and a hard fastball getting better in every inning." By building upon progressive thought available today and throughout history, it offers an important resource for Christians and would-be Christians seeking a more fulfilling and thoughtful faith journey.

Christian Thought in the Twenty-First Century by Douglas H. Shantz,Tinu Ruparell Pdf

Description: In this volume some of the outstanding Christian scholars of our day reflect on how their minds have changed, how their academic fields have changed over the course of their careers, and the pressing issues that Christian scholars will need to address in the twenty-first century. This volume offers an accessible portrait of key trends in the world of Christian scholarship today. Christian Thought in the Twenty-First Century features scholars from Great Britain, Canada, the United States, and Switzerland. The contributors represent a wide variety of academic backgrounds--from biblical studies to theology, to religious studies, to history, English literature, philosophy, law, and ethics. This book offers a personal glimpse of Christian scholars in a self-reflective mode, capturing their honest reflections on the changing state of the academy and on changes in their own minds and outlooks. The breadth and depth of insight afforded by these contributions provide rich soil for a reader's own reflections, and an agenda that will occupy Christian thinkers well into the twenty-first century. Endorsements: "I heard many of the lecturers whose essays appear in this book when they were guests of the Chair of Christian Thought at the University of Calgary. Now they reappear to reflect personally on how their minds and academic fields have changed over the course of their careers. They tackle key issues in their disciplines needing future attention and present their views as authentic humans, not only as respected academics." --Wayne Holst University of Calgary and St. David's United Church, Calgary About the Contributor(s): Douglas H. Shantz is Professor of Christian Thought at the University of Calgary. His recent books are Between Sardis and Philadelphia (2008), and A New Introduction to German Pietism (2012). Christian Witness in Pluralistic Contexts in the 21st Century by Enoch Yee-nock Wan Pdf

"This volume is not a set of textbook answers on how to witness to Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and people with other religions based on simple formulas. It is the wrestlings, affirmations, and testimonies of those who have been deeply involved in ministries to people of other religious faiths and have thought deeply about the issues religious pluralism raises." - Paul G. Hiebert, Professor Emeritus, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

Tempered Resilience by Tod Bolsinger Pdf

Christian Book Award Finalist What type of leadership is needed in a moment that demands adaptive change? Tod Bolsinger, author of Canoeing the Mountains, is uniquely positioned to explore the qualities of adaptive leadership in contexts ranging from churches to nonprofit organizations. He deftly examines both the external challenges we face and the internal resistance that holds us back. Bolsinger writes: "To temper describes the process of heating, holding, hammering, cooling, and reheating that adds stress to raw iron until it becomes a glistening knife blade or chisel tip." When reflection and relationships are combined into a life of deliberate practice, leaders become both stronger and more flexible. As a result, these resilient leaders are able to offer greater wisdom and skill to the organizations they serve. Also available: Tempered Resilience Study Guide

Solid Foundations for the 21st Century Christian by Milton C. Richards Pdf

Milton attended church while growing up in Richmond, Virginia; though it was mostly just part of the family's Sunday routine before dinner and the football game. After graduating from the University of Richmond, Milton entered the U.S. Coast Guard's Officer Candidate School in 1963. Thus began a twenty year career that took him all over the country, including assignments in Viet Nam, Guam and Hawaii. It was in Mayport, Florida, while serving as captain of a Coast Guard buoy tender, that Milton accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. This experience changed his whole outlook on life and gave him a hunger and thirst for the word of God that continues to drive him today. Since his retirement from the military, Milton has served on church pastoral staff and as lay volunteer in many capacities. In 1989 he co-founded Prison Fellowship Guam and has been involved in prison ministry for the last 21 years, including three years as a prison chaplain. Milton has seen first hand how the power of God's truth changes lives. Milton also observed that many church members were lukewarm in their Christian walk because they lacked an understanding of the foundational truths of Christianity; and therefore hesitated to even share their Christian faith with another. This book is his effort to help those who truly desire a "Solid Foundation" for their future spiritual growth. Milton and his wife, Olivia, live in Gatesville, Texas. He is available for speaking to groups and churches. You may reach him via e-mail at [email protected] or by letter at PO Box 1073, Gatesville, Texas, 76528.

A Journey Through Christian Theology by William P. Anderson Pdf

"The history of Christian theology can be a daunting, even forbidding field for the novice, who sees neither the need for nor pertinence of rummaging around dusty old texts. This people-friendly volume, a full-scale reader in the history of Christian theology, offers an easy, non-threatening, occasionally humorous yet quite thorough entry into Christianity's central texts from the Apostolic Fathers to Mary Daly. It is also enlivened by dozens of cartoons by Rich Diesslin. Highly accessible introductions to five periods precede brief introductions to and texts from more than fifty key thinkers. The texts highlight perennial themes and questions in Christian tradition, especially the meaning and importance of Jesus, challenges to the institutional church, tensions of faith and reason, spirituality, and the Christian quest for social justice. The new edition, half again as large as the original, adds significant work from the Cappadocian Fathers and the Christological controversialists, the Franciscan tradition, the Radical and English reforms, and deeper coverage of twentieth-century theologians. With learning aids, research-paper suggestions and guide, and glossary" -- Publisher description.

Christ's Team by Robert C. Frank,Kolb Net Works,Robin Van Auken Pdf

This book is about the role of Jesus Christ in ongoing creation on Earth. The records and artifacts left by earlier civilizations leave no doubt that creation has been a continuing process and that the quality of human life is getting better, improving dramatically in recent years. While there are still pockets of conflict, poverty and illness, most humans are living longer, happier, and more productive lives. No one has seen God, but then no one has seen gravity or the wind either. We can only see how they affect the world around us. In a similar manner Christians believe that we are observing the presence of God in ongoing creation. While Christian tradition emphasizes the role of Jesus Christ as redeemer, human history has shown us that he also came to teach humans how to work together and care for each other. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, his followers have become a Team dedicated to carrying on creation, improving human life, and managing our planet. Studies of continuing creation seem to provide answers to a number of lingering questions as well; questions such as: Why are human beings able to understand so much of their world? What is God doing about human suffering? Why is it important to obey certain rules as we carry out the activities of our lives? How does God answer prayer? Why is it necessary for Christians to gather together every seven days? Why is every human life so important? The pages that follow suggest some answers.
