The Accentual Patterns of the Slavic Languages by Edward Stankiewicz Pdf

"Accent is one of the most vexing problems in Slavic linguistics, and it has given rise to diverse schools of thought particularly in the area of historical reconstruction. Based on almost three decades of research, this monumental work is the first systematic description of the accentual patterns of all the Slavic languages with mobile stress: Slovene, Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian, Byelorossian, and Slovincian." "In addition, it pursues two supplementary, but by no means less significant, goals - to interpret the historical development of the accentual patterns and to make a typological comparison of their similarities and differences. This book differs from previous studies of the accentuation of the individual Slavic languages in both method and scope. Its consistent morphophonemic approach distinguishes automatic and nonautomatic alternations and emphasizes the role of the latter in the expression of Slavic grammatical categories and the various parts of speech." "Although the author's general approach is synchronic, it does not diminish the importance of the historical-comparative method, but gives it additional strength by placing the historic interpretation of Slavic accentual patterns on a solid descriptive base. Although Slavic accentology has been largely treated as an exemplar of historical reconstruction, the results have been clouded by controversy and doubt. This state of affairs is partly due to the scarcity of historical records, but even more to the lack of systematic and exhaustive descriptions of the contemporary accentual patterns. This book intends to fill that gap and to show to what extent these patterns continue to resemble one another in the midst of diversity and despite a long history of accentual change." "The historical sections and comments accompanying the synchronic descriptions are designed to trace the development of the accentual patterns from Common Slavic up to the modern period. The author touches on the basic properties of the Common Slavic accentual system, arguing that its overall design can be determined within the framework of Common Slavic rather than with reference to a Balto-Slavic accentuation which is modeled on that of Lithuanian."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Selected Writings on Slavic and General Linguistics by Frederik Kortlandt Pdf

The larger part of the present volume is about Slavic historical linguistics while the second part is about more general issues and methodological aspects. The initial chapters contain a revision of the author’s Slavic Accentuation and a discussion of the Slovene evidence for the Late Proto-Slavic accentual system and of the Kiev Leaflets. These are complemented by an extensive review of Garde’s theory and an introductory article about the work of earlier authors for those who are unfamiliar with the subject. Then follows a discussion of changes in the vowel system, Bulgarian developments, final syllables in Slavic, early changes in the consonant system, and of Halle and Kiparsky’s review of Garde’s book. This results in a relative chronology of 70 stages from Proto-Indo-European to Slavic. The following chapters deal with the progressive palatalization, the accentuation of West and South Slavic languages, various aspects of the Old Slovene manuscripts, the chronology of nominal paradigms, and other issues under discussion in recent publications. The second part of the present volume contains a number of case studies exemplifying specific theoretical problems, most of them of a semantic nature. The synchronic studies deal with Russian and Japanese syntax and semantics, the diachronic studies with tonogenesis in different languages and with semantic reconstruction in Altaic and Chinese.

A Survey of Word Accentual Patterns in the Languages of the World by Harry van der Hulst,Rob Goedemans,Ellen van Zanten Pdf

This volume contains a wealth of information on the word accentual (metrical, stress) phenomena that we encounter in natural languages. Two types of information will be supplied: language profiles in 'tabular form' and survey articles. Of the total of 10 chapters in Part I, 3 are general in nature, while the other 7 describe and analyze word accentual systems in all continents. The volume's point of departure is a database called StressTyp. StressTyp developed into a database on word prosodic systems of the languages of the world. The over 500 languages, representing a wide geographical distribution, taken from the StressTyp database will be represented in this volume. For all these languages, information regarding identity, sources and stress location(s) will be included, accompanied by some examples in nearly all cases. These language data packages will be organized by language family. This information constitutes Part II of the volume.

Introduction to Proto-Indo-European and Balto-Slavic Accentology by Roman Sukac Pdf

This book offers a comprehensive introduction to Proto-Indo-European, Balto-Slavic and Proto-Slavic accentology; a branch of diachronic linguistics dealing with the development of syllable stress, intonation, and quantity at the word level. Of particular interest in the book is its detailed summary of the major approaches and solutions to accentology of the last thirty years. Furthermore, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on accentuation of the Indo-European proto-language and the accentuation of Balto-Slavic languages. Such research is integral to our knowledge of how accentual patterns developed from the reconstructed proto-language to the modern Indo-European languages.

Balto-Slavic Accentual Mobility by Thomas Olander Pdf

Why does the accent jump back and forth in Russian words like golová 'head', acc. gólovu, gen. golový, dat. golové etc.? How come we find similar alternations in other Slavic languages and in a Baltic language like Lithuanian? The quest for the origin of the so-called "mobile accent paradigms" of Baltic and Slavic leads the reader through other Indo-European language branches such as Indo-Iranian, Greek and Germanic, all of which are relevant to the reconstruction of the Proto-Indo-European accentuation system. After the examination of the evidence for the reconstruction of the Proto-Indo-European accentuation system, focus is moved to the Baltic and Slavic accentuation systems and their relationship to each other and to Proto-Indo-European. A comprehensive history of research and numerous bibliographical references to earlier pieces of scholarship throughout the book make it a useful tool for anybody who is interested in Balto-Slavic and Indo-European accentology. Written in a simple style and constantly aiming at presenting old and new opinions on the various problems, the volume may serve as an introduction to this complicated field.

Word Prosodic Systems in the Languages of Europe by Harry van der Hulst Pdf

The series is a platform for contributions of all kinds to this rapidly developing field. General problems are studied from the perspective of individual languages, language families, language groups, or language samples. Conclusions are the result of a deepened study of empirical data. Special emphasis is given to little-known languages, whose analysis may shed new light on long-standing problems in general linguistics.
