The Amateur Cracksman is an 1899 short story collection by E. W. Hornung. It was published in the UK by Methuen and Co., London, and in the US by Scribner's, New York. Many later editions (T. It was the original short story collection by Hornung, featuring his most famous character, A. J. Raffles, a gentleman thief in late Victorian Great Britain. Raffles by E W. HORNUNG Pdf

Ernest William Hornung (1866 - 1921) was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels. Aside from his Raffles stories, Hornung was a prodigious writer of fiction, publishing numerous books from 1890, with A Bride from the Bush to his 1914 novel The Crime Doctor.

Both men are constantly under the surveillance of Inspector Mackenzie of Scotland Yard who is always thwarted in his attempts to pin the crimes on Raffles. In the final story, "The Gift of the Emperor", Raffles is called into service on behalf of the Foreign Office who wish to recover a valuable pearl from a German diplomat staying in England. A.J Raffles, a prominent member in London society and well-respected athlete, has a shocking secret identity; he is a notorious thief. Always chasing the thrill of a heist or pickpocketing, Raffles attends test cricket games under the slight guise of interest for the sport. Though he genuinely loves the game, Raffles is more tempted by the long duration of the test matches, granting him plenty of time and opportunity to steal from the wealthy spectators. Well-seasoned in this crime, Raffles eventually initiates a partner to assist him in his transgressions. Having idolized the older man’s athletic career, Bunny is a young man who admires Raffles. As their friendship grows, the size of their crimes follows, stealing diamonds, committing felonies, aiding fugitives, and executing daring heists. However, as they continue to commit crimes, they catch the attention of a Scotland Yard detective. The Amateur Cracksman by Ernest William Hornung Pdf

It was half-past twelve when I returned to the Albany as a last desperate resort. The scene of my disaster was much as I had left it. The baccarat-counters still strewed the table, with the empty glasses and the loaded ash-trays. A window had been opened to let the smoke out, and was letting in the fog instead. Raffles himself had merely discarded his dining jacket for one of his innumerable blazers. Yet he arched his eyebrows as though I had dragged him from his bed.
